Knicks · Dirk vs Amare... (page 1)

Not so much head to head - but... is Amare at the same level as Dirk?
BasketballJones @ 6/11/2011 9:43 PM
No, Dirk is taller. He is listed at 7.0', and Amare is listed at 6' 10". So Dirk is at a higher level.
technomaster @ 6/11/2011 9:50 PM
A higher plane.
GustavBahler @ 6/11/2011 9:52 PM
Different games, different styles. Hard to compare except by the numbers.
BigDaddyG @ 6/11/2011 10:58 PM
Dirk is one of the greatest power forwards off all time. Amar'e isn't there yet.

After watching Amar'e for a year, I have to agree with you. Dirk gets his shot off at will. He can take the ball from the top of the key, and go from there. Amar'e has a very difficult time with his handle and his charges. Hopefully he overcomes these issues as his game progresses.

Dirk is a top 5 player right now and really has been for a few years. Amare is probably between 15 and 20

Lebron
Wade
Durant
Dirk
Dwight

Rose
Kobe

When fully healthy I believe Amar'e is not that far off. Sure Dirk is the better player, but Amar'e can be a dominant player in his own right. People forget his big playoff performances in the past. He carried the Suns last year and us this year until he broke down. Remember how brutal a schedule we had in March. This year we kind of wore him out so he wasn't as effective, but I believe that now with Melo here to take the load off and if we can bring in a C, then we can rest STAT for the post season. STAT looked real good in game 1 of the playoffs and then he hurt his back. I think STAT can certainly give us some big performances, but he's not Dirk. He doesn't have to be now cuz we gave him help and we should be able to give him more.
y2zipper @ 6/12/2011 12:37 AM
Dirk and Amar'e are basically the same player. 20 points, 8 and a half rebounds and both are big-time fourth quarter players. It doesn't pass the eye test because Amar'e played next to Nash for so long, but I think this year we found out that Amar'e is actually underrated. New York didn't have anywhere near the supporting cast that Dirk does in Dallas THIS year, though.

Amare and Dirk are not equal levels as a player. Everything is not about stats.

Dirk is a top 10 player in the NBA right now, top 50 of all-time. Amare is top 15-20 right now.

Juice @ 6/12/2011 1:07 AM
Simply put it's much easier to structure a team around a player the caliber of Dirk than it is Amar'e. Amar'e has youth, power, and athleticism over Dirk but Dirk's skillsets blow Amare's out of the water

We have never seen a player like Dirk in the NBA and probably never will for at least another generation. Amar'e is Antonio MyDyess before the bad knees which is very nice but it ain't no Dirk.

nixluva @ 6/12/2011 2:01 AM
It's silly to extend Amar'e out to as far as 15-20 in the league. I don't see how there are that many players that are better than him. There are only so many players that can carry a team or be the #1 guy convincingly. IMO the current top players in no specific order:

Lebron, Wade, Dirk, Kobe, Howard, Durant, Rose, Amar'e, Melo, Deron, Paul, Gasol, Giffin, Love, KG, Duncan, Pierce ...

I love amare but dirk is a guy you can run your offense through. Amare is a GREAT complement but can't carry a team to the finals

Amare's younger but Dirk's body is holding up better.
Bonn1997 @ 6/12/2011 7:49 AM
Right now, this is the kind of thread that would be taken seriously only on a Knicks' message board.
Vmart @ 6/12/2011 8:41 AM
Another lets rip on the Knicks players thread. This is getting old. Only time Dallas looks real good is when they have had a coach that demanded defense. If not for that they don't get to the finals. All I know is Dirk plays very little defense as does Amare only difference is the others on the team are there to cover up his weakest skill set defense. Amare doesn't have that and never really had that he has always had to be the last line of defense and that isn't his strong point of his game.

Actually it was another "let's ridiculously elevate a Knick" thread. If the comparison were with Bosh or Boozer, we'd have a fair discussion and I'd put Amare ahead of them.

Olbrannon @ 6/12/2011 10:01 AM
Dirk would not be denied and is making some of the most difficult shots I've seen on a regular basis. Amar'e had Nash, Somebody forget Kidd and Berea are there? Dirk is at a different level. Stat does not have Dirk's handle nor can he shoot consistently those shots Nowitski is taking.

This is the first time I've watched JET consistently over a number of games. I see a lot of TD in that player.

this is the best assessment you can make. amare was much better than all of us anticipated and can carry a team to the playoffs but dirk carried a team that would be a lottery team without him to the finals and hopefully a championship. dirk is the top 50 player of all time. amare has a few years to get there yet, tho.

technomaster @ 6/12/2011 11:28 PM
Well, I think the whole point of contention in my mind is that Amare Stoudemire has been one of the most dominant big men in recent history - and while we'll have to see how his health holds up, should just be entering his prime. It will be curious to see what a few seasons of 24ppg/9rpg will do to his legacy. (a lot of weight will be dependent on his team's record)

Dirk just cemented his place in the all-time greats by winning a championship and a finals MVP to boot. What happens if the Knicks win a title with Amare? Clearly, they're different types of players, but they both play the same position.

What about the opposite scenario - if Amare produces like he does, gets deep in the playoffs regularly but doesn't get it done, will he be considered on a similar plane as the the Barkleys and Karl Malones of the world?

Nalod @ 6/13/2011 1:18 AM
Athletic player vs fundamental player.

Fundamentals wins. Dirk has Bling.

Dirk is the best power forward not named Larry Bird.

Did what malone could not do.

But lets be real, Kidd was very smart, Jet awsome, and Chandler athletic.

Be suprised if Amare is as good or better in 4 years when Dirks age. Dirk has gotten better!

Fundamentals!
