I actually had the same thought. He's big and has the speed for the position. Prototypical shooting guard build and athleticism, which you don't see much in the NBA anymore - sounds weird to say, but who are the great SGs anymore? There are more 6'4" combo or point guards.
I like this pick.
NYKBocker@ 6/24/2011 12:55 AM
If Iman replaces Billups and Jerome Jordan or Josh Harrellson starts then we have a really tall starting five.
I'm liking this pick more and more. He reminds me a bit of Michael Ray when we first got him, and people thought he was too big to be a PG, then the turned into a great one, who could guard anyone. Michael Ray had an inconsistent shot, but got better. I think Iman's mechanics are already better there and D'Antoni has been a good shot doctor.

This vid is from game action and includes other players, but there is some great stuff on Iman in this one.
So we should all be comfortable handing the reigns of the offense to this kid based on some youtube highlight clips??? I'm still waiting for anybody to explain what his role is on offense.
I would say to start, have him pick and roll without the ball with chauncey around the 3 point line. He can either take the elbow jumper or drive to the basket (this is only if melo and stoudemore are out). This allows him to take a shot similar to a free throw if it's there, and allows him to use his finishing ability if the lane is open.
Otherwise, he needs to extend his range to 3 point land in order to work with Melo and Stoudemire. See, having 2 max contracts in players that aren't great passers makes it difficult on the rest of your team.
Amar'e and Carmelo are going to have to pass the ball more. That's the only way that weakness is going to be address, and they'll figure it out.

I was pleasantly surprised with Shawne W. defense and so we're starting to build a team with more capable defenders on it. I don't know if they intend to bring Brown back, but I would guess so and he's another young player with good defensive potential.
As a team we block a ton of shots, we just didn't stop enough penetration in the 1st place and we didn't get rebounds. Iman is a good defender and like Fields is a good rebounding guard too. Iman's 6 rebs a game is great for a guard.
We traded all our shotblockers in the Melo trade (Chandler, Timo, Gallo).. well we have one left Amare.

Turiaf is still here and he was one of our better shotblockers. The problem wasn't so much shotblocking which we did well. It's perimeter defenders slowing down penetration so that we give our interior defenders a better chance to defend the basket. That's where Iman really helps. With Iman at the top of the defense it's a much different story than only having CB at the top against quick PG's.

Wow..you took the words right out of me...
Some of you act like we had a lottery pick...or we miss some big time player..this was (imo) a sleeper draft..knicks need Some one 2 guard wade..rondo..rose..
When we drafted td, I couldn't find one high light clip where he even had 1 aast or a steal..just him shooting .
RonRon@ 6/24/2011 2:21 AM
knowing Dantoni, Shumpert would be playing with
Billups TD Shumpert Melo Amare
I think Shumpert and TD can be really nasty together if at the 1/2 if we can add some a good shot blocking presence...
Sucks we didn't couldn't use Fields to pick before Philly. I am not sure if they would have drafted another 2/3 since they have so many anyway....
nixluva@ 6/24/2011 2:43 AM
Right now it looks like our Big man contingent is gonna be Jordan, Turiaf and Harrellson. Iman really rounds out our guards CB, TD, Fields and Iman. We've got great size in the backcourt now. Both Fields and Iman are great rebounders too.

PG at 17? ...Donnie knows best. I actually like this pick. Seems like a good kid (humble) and perimeter defense was also a need.
You can see his focus and intensity while training in the video below. He was clearly the best in this drill.
PS. Moved to Stockholm, any Knick fans over here?

Glad you posted this vid. I saw this a while back and couldn't remember where it was. This is a perfect example of this kids lateral quickness. This video blew me away when I 1st saw it.

Holy shit he's fast.
Tymeless - where did you move from and how did you become a Knick fan?

The more I read up on Shumpert, the more he reminds me of Larry Hughes. Both were highly touted, 6'5" combo guards with questionable jump shots and advanced defensive skilled who were probably miscast as point guards early in their careers. Let's hope that Shumpert realizes that his game is better suited to slashing to the rim at this point in his career and he develops a three-point shot down the line. Here's a quick recap of their college stats.
Larry Hughes Stat Summary:
Season GP MPG PPG FG% 3FG% FT% APG RPG BPG SPG 1997-98 32 32.4 20.9 41.5 29.0 69.2 2.4 5.1 0.4 2.2
Iman Shumpert Stat Summary:

I think the Knicks could have drafted Singleton and then made a run at Malcom Lee. I don't see a big difference between Lee and Shumpert if that was what the Knicks wanted. Singleton was too good to pass up in my opinion.

That probably would've been ideal. But it looks like teams didn't want to deal with us, for whatever reason. I really wish we could've bought the rights to Tyler from Charlotte. Maybe Jordan didn't want to help out his old rivals?

They did not want to deal with us because we had nothing to deal with, I would think.
Another result of a certain trade.

I guess if you are a gm and you can't fleece the Knicks in a trade like Morey and Ujiri you don't deal with them.

We had money. You're telling me our cash isn't as good as Golden State's money?

I have to say; saw no point guard skills and very little by way of defense. At6'6", he's a big guard, he's an enigma

Looked fine other than the right knee pain a few seconds into the video.
