Knicks · MDA wanted Shumpert? (page 3)

Typical D'Antoni
Mike dislikes anybody GOOD and likes the NBA guys like Chris Duhon, Tim Thomas, Jared Jeffries
Does one ever trusts ? D'Antoni to value or select talent coming into NBA ?

He is likely having Nightmares of losing his brother off coaching tandem on knickerbockers because Knicks are pressured to hire new Defensive a_ssistant coach which is Brother Dan D'Antoni we are told handles D' thus gus Dan D'Antoni is one that may not get extension OR his days are numbered
with having a knick job!

If there was any question whether or not this was the right move, just think of this: If knicks drafted Singleton, we would be seeing a lineup of Billups, Fields, Singleton, Melo, Stoudemire a lot more than anyone would want. Those would be the 5 best players on the team, but we do not need Stoudemire playing those center minutes. We may still see it a little bit with Fields sliding to the 3 and Shumpert at the 2, but ultimately this puts more pressure on the team to add a solid center and play Stoudemire a majority of his minutes at the PF slot.

Man what are you talking about? Duhon was the best of a bad situation. Donnie didn't want to give a long contract and very few players would take only a 2 year deal. As for Mike not liking talented players, what do you call Nash, Marion, Shaq, Gallo, Chandler, Amar'e, Melo, CB ... Sure he's had his role player projects like Raja, Diaw and Jeffries. That doesn't mean he's anti talent. You're reaching with this one.

What were we gonna do with Singleton? At least there's a need at PG/SG where Shumpert plays.

but whats the Knock on MDA? Hill clearly had a great workout, then the staff turned on him when he was clearly out of shape for the summer league.

MDA wanted Marcus Banks because he needed a great defender in the backcourt. He didnt play well, just like AR didnt play well.

On the flip side Raja Bell was a first team NBA defender under MDA.

MDA wants guys who will defend. His history is pretty clear in trying to get defensive guys. Its getting good ones to pan out that he has not had success with

It's funny cuz when it was said that Mike was pushing for Shaq, that never gets brought up. So you have Mike wanting Banks for D, Shaq to help inside and playing a guy like Raja who clearly was their perimeter defender. Remember the fights with Kobe. So this narrative that he doesn't care about D is actually countered by his attempts over the years to
improve the D. Until Shaq he never had a real C to anchor his teams D. At some point Kerr and others have to bare some responsibility for failing to find bigman help.

Here we have a chance to perhaps put the most balanced team on the floor that we've had. It looks like we'll end up with at the least Jordan and Harrellson inside. To be honest I wouldn't be totally upset with that. Sure its not a given that either will work out but That's some decent size and talent to work with. I'm really hoping Jordan has indeed developed. He already had some good skill level last year. He's got the size and hopefully he has bulked up a little and learned the game a bit more.

Jordan is a legit 7-1, 250 lb, 7-5 wingspan and 9-5 standing reach. He moves well and has offensive skills. It would be a major boost if this kid is ready to contribute to this team. If he was in this draft he'd probably be a 1st rd pick.

d'antoni never wanted anything to do with shaq. steve kerr traded for shaq to push d'antoni out.

Simply meant that he might have seen limitations in Singleton's game or how he would fit in with the Knick, not that he really disliked his game.

In many ways, Singleton is a bigger version of Shumpert, but not large enough to really have an impact on the Knicks, since he is not a center, would not be allowed to take time from Amare and Anthony, and if folks wonder about Shumpert's offense, Singleton is hardly a polished offensive player at this point.

Other teams bypassed Singleton and Faried, so MDA is not the only one who didn't see the value of those two.

Don't see where the Shumpert pick is a stretch, especially after Vucevic was off the board, but I think they would have taken Shumpert over Vucevic, anyway.

Thanks for clarifiying. I thought you were referring to character or maturity issues which seem to have impacted who was chosen in the past.

Suns owner Robert Sarver was the first to suggest trading for O’Neal, but D’Antoni quickly warmed to it and the two eventually sold Kerr on the idea. In truth, the Suns weren’t going to win a championship with Shawn Marion; Nash and D’Antoni had both tired of him. But even when Kerr and D’Antoni sat side by side at the February news conference trumpeting the trade, the disconnect between them was obvious. Kerr said then he thought the Suns had only a “puncher’s chance” of winning the title the way they were presently constructed. D’Antoni looked miffed and said he thought the Suns could have won with his small-ball system even if he also thought O’Neal would make them better.

The rift between coach and GM began three months earlier in an early season meeting when Kerr suggested D’Antoni post up Stoudemire more often. D’Antoni bristled and told Kerr not to tell him how to coach offense. Over time, one source said, the coaching staff grew to distrust Kerr and assistant GM Vinny Del Negro.

As long as Shumpert is used properly I have no problem. I dont want to see him jacking 3's. If he can play solid defense and score some transition baskets I will be satified for yr 1.

He's a role player and as such we drafted him for his strengths and want to enhance what he does well. Thing is he shot 47% from 2pt range and 80% from the line. He doesn't have to shoot a ton of 3's. It's all about shot selection and working on his shot. This team has a great track record of improving the shooting of it's players. I wouldn't really worry about that.

David Lee's shot improved because of David Lee not the Knicks.

typical walsh move..when shumpert pick doesnt work he can blame mda..if it works he was in charge of draft..just like his last couple of drafts in indiana..he said he let larry bird make the choice when the draft choice didnt work...if he said no to the tmac deal and just said no to dolan which left knicks with no additional assets in the carmelo trade, the knicks would be much better off..but thats why dolan picked walsh over a guy like jerry west cause he knew he could push walsh around..walsh is a good man but he allows his superiors, dolan, and the guys he's in charge of, coaches such as MDA, push him around

completely off. Walsh always takes blame when appropriate and never pushes off blame.

He's old school.

I think you may be letting the media fool you or something

how am i letting the media fool me..the media loves walsh..they love love love him...in '09 everyone knew the knicks wanted curry and this year shumpert was their man..he gives out too much info to the media....just like dick steinberg of the NY Jets..in 1991 word was out quickly that the jets loved bret favre and were poised to take him in the early 2nd rd..atlanta jumped right ahead of the jets and picked favre..they then traded him the following year to green bay who's new gm was steinbergs asst with the jets..keep your mouths shut gm's esp b4 drafts

I'm pretty sure they would've taken Kahwi if he fell and i'm pretty sure they would've taken Vucevic if he wasn't gone. Iman was one of several options at 17. They couldn't be sure what was gonna happen.
RonRon @ 6/30/2011 2:16 PM
at 17, personally, the only player that I would think about picking up was Marshon Brooks.

I am just not intrigued by tweeners at the SF/PF or PF and cant play center.
They just wouldn't mix in well when we have

Melo
Amare

at both of our forward spots...

We don't have the luxury of drafting a European player, waiting for him to come with buyout issues, and then waiting a couple years later to let him develop....

RonRon @ 6/30/2011 2:22 PM
I think I also would have taken Keith Benson over Jorts. I think Jorts might not even get drafted if we didn't take him.
At 220, it would be tough for him to play the center. He seems like he would help and use his length, speed, and athleticism to block shots, grab rebounds but probably wouldn't be able to guard a big body.

for comparison, Shumpert is 222.

I definitely agreed with this on draft night. I think Jorts must have been very impressive at his workout. It does appear that he wasn't on the radar for anyone else.
