I'm looking to buy a used car - I live in manhattan and need something to just get around with on weekends. Looking to spend about $3K max on something reliable that I can park on the street. Any advice from fellow UK'ers on where the good deals are at?
honestly, just look for "for sale by owner" signs and find a good mechanic that will inspect the vehicle before you buy. No one can take a hit right now (like by selling to a dealer) and you should be able to shave the asking price down by quite a bit that way (Fair Market Value - work needed). Either way, it's a win-win, as they'll get a little more than if they sold to a dealer
I have a car I might want to sell but it's worth more than your asking price. BB value is around 7.5k and dealer will pay 5.5k.
It's a great car but slightly more than you want to spend unfortunately.

what kind of car is it? can you give some more detail?
2001 BMW 330i Gray metallic, black leatherette interior approximate 84k miles. Runs like new and is in great condition.
I had the windows tinted, installed a hookup so you can play your iPod or iPhone and charge it at the same time. Mechanically it is in great condition, serviced regularly.
There is some minor paint damage on the body since it is 10 years old and the car has been in accidents but nothing major - some panels have been repainted as a result.
It also has tires on it that are 1 year old with low mileage on them.
