Short training camp, little practice time - advantage veteran teams. Trainers will be very busy if this deal happens.

This benefits a coach who has non productive training camps, doesn't like to practice, and needs training camp plus 15-20 games to get his team winning.

crzymdups @ 11/11/2011 12:45 AM
i don't think it helps the knicks because they've played together so little. i think they need a full training camp and a bunch of pre-season games. lots of new faces and melo/amar'e/billups haven't played together much, still.
CrushAlot @ 11/11/2011 12:53 AM
Knicks came out of camp 3-8 last year and 1-9 the season before when they brought back their core from D'Antoni's first year. Training camp has not seemed to help get these guys ready under this coach.

A shorter season is only an advantage for Miami with their "thin" team

they've made substantial in-season trades every single year d'antoni has been here. he's never had continuity heading into training camp. you can say many things about d'antoni, but knocking him for slow starts when it's always a new team in camp doesn't seem too fair.

for us, it could be a very bad situation when you factor in all the back to backs they played in 99. With Amare's knees, the last thing he needs is additional stress from increased back to back games.

That is a good point. He doesn't pull back and he plays a ton of minutes.

agreeeeed. if there is a season, the knicks NEED a backup PF.

briggs brought his name up a while ago and i think he'd be perfect to backup amar'e - carl landry. believe he's a FA.

If this season is lost I'm hoping we can somehow re-acquire Wilson Chandler since he could back up both the small and power forward positions.

Does anyone else think a lost season might actually prove a boon the the Knicks? One less year on D'Antoni's contract, an unexpected year of rest on Amare's legs, the fact that the guys we are targeting will be free agents we could go and sign outright (Possibly depending on the cap) without worrying about other teams trying to snag them (like NJ tried to do with Melo).

It would also get us out of Renaldo's contract and our rookie centers could gain an extra year of seasoning overseas or in the NBDL

nixluva @ 11/11/2011 11:03 AM
Losing a year is a horrible idea!!! This team needs a season! Perhaps this time things will be a bit better. For one thing the team has more top tier talent to start the year since MDA has been here. Also they aren't starting completely from scratch. Remember last year both Gallo and Chan started off shaky and Felton was LOST and not in synch with Amar'e. We tried to add in Moz as well. IMO there's no comparison between the 2 seasons in terms of the challenges. They may not come out of the gates blazing but I don't see a 1-9 or 3-8.

This would've helped the Knicks if STAT and Melo came through on their promise to get the players together. What a joke most pro athletes are.

GOTTA disagree. With no start of the season in sight, what good would having a training camp be. You hold it close to the start of a season. If he had done it when he said he would.....it would have been a waste of effort. Sure it would have satisfied our rabid desire to see Imam and the rest of the squad but, it still would have been redundant for the players taking part.

Last season was the Knicks first decent season. Plus it was a completely different team. The other years before, the Knicks had bad teams, so of course they would get off to bad starts. A training camp is absolutely imperative this season, ESPECIALLY if you want to get Melo and Amar'e on the same page as the rest of the team. More importantly, you want to see where Amar'e is at, health wise. None of us, including the Knicks brass, have a clue how he is doing. I don't know if Amar'e knows how Amar'e is doing for hat matter. Backs are sticky situations. Backs combined with prior serious knee problems are even stickier. Plus, you want to see where Iman and Fields and Douglas fit in. A shortened training camp and pre season would be catastrophic. So would a condensed season. I'm never in favor of things that are risky to the players health. I don't care how much money they make, when it comes to that. I don't believe in the "Old school tough it out" theory.

Besides Amar'e risking his health, what is the disbenefit of the players working out together? Even if it's light or just some scrimmage games? I mean, if the stars are doing it, why can't the actual teams?

smackeddog @ 11/11/2011 12:11 PM
Out of curiosity- what kind of contract could a max player sign next year? Is the amount based on last years BRI figures, the current seasons BRI, or is it a fixed amount? As the caps staying at $58mil for 2 years (if the deal gets passed), and the max contact amount goes down, then it would increase our chances of getting CP or DH.

I am pretty sure Amare is fine. I believe he played in Isiah's charity game and also was training with Isiah and some other players.

The Heat were well over .500 before they went on their 22-2 run that started in the end of November last season. I don't see how that compares to a team that had came out and went 3-14 with the same core group of players from the previous season. Going 10-5 for the month following that just seemed to fuel the coaches delusional we are trying to make the playoffs statements for a team that won 29 games and didn't play its first round picks. Teams with coaches that don't focus on preperation and practice struggle.

Your view that MDA is the source of the poor starts is odd! Did you not see Felton struggle to get his game going? Gallo also struggled and it took time for Felton and Amare to get any chemistry. Timo was green! AR was lost! Once the team had more time to work together they did play well! No team has had as much roster change the last 3 years as the Knicks!!!

Hopefully the Knick players will come together and practice soon. It's been good that guys have gotten healthy. The biggest issue is gonna be the free agent Signing period. Will this team be able to pick up a decent Center? Coaching is the least of our problems IMO.

The roster is stronger! The coaching staff is stronger! I think the team confidence will be at a high level with Melo on board from the start! This isn't one of the weak teams anymore. This was a 6 seed last year but this team has a shot to be in the top 4 this year. Atlanta and Orlando are the teams the Knicks have to pass and it's not that far to climb IMO.

Miami going 10-8 thru end of Nov is well over .500?

Knicks started 2 rookies in starting lineup. 4 new players in starting lineup.

Name me the players that you consider the same core group from the previous season.

Are your thoughts based in reality or are you just making crap up so that you can fuel your hate of MDA?

Its very convenient to ignore the previous 29 win season and say that it didn't count. However, that core group of guys was together and playing for D'Antoni the previous year and came out and went 1-9 to start the season. They did not appear to gain anything from his training camp. Maybe the effort was there last year and the team didn't jell but this didn't just happen once. As far as the 09-10 roster is concerned it is easier to name the new additions. Hill, Douglas, M. Landry and Millic were added. After the November shake up I believe Hughes was the only guy on the team acquired after November of the previous season.
