Knicks · OT: Nothing on Penn State and Paterno??? (page 1)

holfresh @ 11/11/2011 8:31 AM
U guys just about touch every topic that's provocative and moving in life and sports...Nothing on Peterno???

Personally, I think Paterno and Penn State still don't get it...I have kids, I can't even imagine what those kids experienced.... No one, NO ONE, stepped up
to protect these kids from this monster...I'm at a loss...It's really difficult for me to believe that everyone involved in coaching didn't know what was happening...
It's hard to keep stuff like that quiet for over a decade in any workplace...And it's only decade that these abuses have actually been documented, more than likely,
it's been longer...They enabled and protected this guy, watched him bring kid after kid on campus...Who does that??? What's human idly watch this go on year after year...

Not often do we agree but I am 100% aligned with your entire post. It seems like we are living in a moral vacuum. It's a systemic failure of the society as a whole. There is too much focus on self and too little on well being of others. When people are willing to look away from something so heinous it would appear that the essence of what makes us human is collapsing all around us.

DurzoBlint @ 11/11/2011 10:47 AM
I don't how much he knew or if he was unaware of the cover up. I do know it's a shame that children are so often the victims of predators who are supposed to be out for their best interests. To be honest with you...something like that happens to someone in my family, I'm not sure I want the cops involved. I should have the right to Abner Louima the offender.
Nalod @ 11/11/2011 10:48 AM
Whats to talk about? Nobody, not even a closet pedophile is gonna come out and defend Sandusky or even JoePa.

They simply put the football program ahead of the crime and their ambitions clouded their judgement.

JoePa and McCrreary skirted the legality by reporting the infraction but their superiors did not do the right thing.

JoePa and the University will be facing huge civil lawsuits. JoePa saying the other day "in hindsight I should have done more" which was a correct statement and one of remorse but will cost him.

I have not read the indictment but plan to this weekend. ITs pretty phucked from what I have heard.

McCreary can say he was a "graduate assistant" and reported it to his superior and won't get fired under the whistle blowers protection lawas but as a 28 year old man (at the time) why was he confused as to what to do? He should have pulled that kid out of the shower and called the police. When he saw notihing was happening he should have gone to the DA's office and told them.

Their ambition and thinking the institution would be hurt clouded their judgement.

I guess like most folks I am saddened that JoePa was not even close to being what he appeared. He did not cheat in the traditional sense, but he put his program above the law and above decent morality.

They might want to call the Vatican and ask them how they dealt with things. They too protected the institution thinking by doing so was doing more good for more than trying to heal the few.

The Catholic church survived and so will Penn State. But a shit storm is here and now.

Allanfan20 @ 11/11/2011 11:47 AM
There is not much to debate here. Joe Paterno and almost the entire the athletic staff and their superiors screwed up big time here. They all deserve to be fired. The only things that should be debated are the cloudiness of the brains of the students that rioted and protested in the Penn State campus, and if Joe PA should go to jail or not. Personally, I wouldn't be dissapointed if he did.

The graduate assistant f**ked up too. It is, by LAW, to call the highest power possible, meaning the authorities, not Joe PA, ASAP, when something like this happens. No, first he has to make sure the kid is safe and THEN call the police and then alert Joe PA and the athletic director that he just called the police for what he just saw. It's crazy that he's still with the team! He's just as guilty as Paterno!

I did post in the OT forum - seems like we forget to use the OT forum these days and just lump everything into the NBA forum...

My post...

Just read the whole grand jury report: http://online.wsj.com/public/resources/documents/Presentment.pdf
So, so, so, very alarming and disgusting how a predator like Sandusky would be allowed to continually operate. Joe Pa should be ashamed of himself. This really and utterly tarnishes his legacy.

I'm really blown away by this. Anyone else?

it's off season, so posting here is no problem at all. If topic relevant enough I try to move them over here but just missed. Sorry, been super busy.

I have been following this story intently since it broke...

I don't know what to say though. Certainly not something I feel comfortable dissecting. I think the case needs to take its course. Sports seem way secondary after reading this. I've spent some time in Happy Valley and this is the last place I'd expect this story to break

OasisBU @ 11/11/2011 2:49 PM
At first I wasn't sure what to make of the firing, but now I think the University trustees did not go far enough. I know there was some shock to the initial firing of Paterno and the School President, but McCreary should have been axed too and anyone else who touches this story, even if they are on the fringe - because they were all aware of what was going on, and nobody stopped it from happening.

If they were going to start firing people they should have gotten rid of them all and cut the entire group out of the University. Clearly those who knew have no moral backbone, and have no place on that campus.

As Jon Stewart said last night, if you are a grown up and you walk in on an adult raping a 10 year old in the shower you do one of two things:
1) You go in and you stop it
2) You call the police immediately

McCreary did neither of these things and as a result a sexual predator was able to continue destroying the lives of innocent children.

I have not read the indictment and I am not sure I want to, this is just absolutely disgusting.

I also find that the institutions and people who shove honor and morals in everyone's face often tend to have skeletons in their closets worse than anyone could imagine. Interesting how that happens isn't it?

SupremeCommander @ 11/11/2011 2:52 PM
OasisBU wrote:McCreary should have been axed too

I agree, but there's some chatter that he might be protected under whistle-blower laws

BigDaddyG @ 11/11/2011 8:28 PM
I can't through the indictment without getting sick. How the heck do you turn a blind eye when a 10 year old kid is getting raped in the shower. I've seen some people try to make excuses for Paterno and his staff, but I can't help but feel that everyone of them is a POS. What, hard luck inner city kids aren't worth protecting?
Nalod @ 11/11/2011 9:32 PM
This is perhaps the most fair piece I have read so far.

http://joeposnanski.si.com/2011/11/10/th...

Next up is to read the indictment.

jusnice @ 11/14/2011 9:57 AM
Read the indictment - it'll clarify your thinking and any debate you may have about Joe Pa and what he should have done. The only thing I try to remind myself is that the "facts" in the indictment could be false (e.g. the Duke Lacrosse Team years ago falsely accused of raping the stripper). If the allegations are true, then everyone with any knowledge of this situation deserves to be guilty and liable IMO.

I thought about the possibility of a Duke Lacrosse situation but I think the evidence is too compelling. In the Duke case it was 1 person making the allegations, here it is at least 8 individuals and their are witnesses. I agree, everyone with knowledge of the situation deserves to be guilty and held liable.

Nalod @ 11/14/2011 12:26 PM
As repulsed as Sandusky is I don't think rushing to judgement on JoePa is entirely fair.

In time the story will unfold and we an then judge. Sandusky is guilty and the leadership at State is pretty weak.

The womens basketball team got fried on the homophobic coach who was pretty out there regarding lesbians on ther team. Leadership just let it slide.

The reputation of the university was the most important factor and in a seedy world they thought they were above it.

MarburyAnd1Crossover @ 11/14/2011 1:31 PM
Yea, the whole thing is a mess but when it comes to Joe Paterno, I think the university made a mistake.

Joe Paterno is a grandpa; if someone went up to your grandpa and told him you do drugs, he would not want to believe this; old people have a rose colored view of the world where they only see the best, for whatever reason. Joe Paterno didn't even realize what was going on, he is too old for this.

jusnice @ 11/17/2011 12:12 PM
Have you guys read anything about the missing DA who might have prosecuted but suddenly disappeard and was never seen again...very strange. I'm not one for conspiracy theories, but this is freaky: http://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news/local/DA-Who-Never-Charged-Sandusky-Has-Been-Missing-Since-2005-133615093.html

I hate saying this, but think there may be a suicide as part of the fallout of this scandal. If not Sandusky, then perhaps one of the people who had intimate knowledge but did nothing...

ramtour420 @ 11/17/2011 3:20 PM
In this episode of the Daily Show they air a telephone interview from Sandunsky. He even sounds like a pedophile. I hope the judje will throw the book at this guy. And perhaps put him with the general population.

First Penn State, then 'Cuse, now the Red Sox. http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/red-sox-hit-child-sex-abuse-lawsuit-article-1.986919

I believe we will see more and more of this stuff. Unfortunately, sexual abuse in sports and around sports has been an issue that has been kept quiet for too long.

Oh I didn't see the impregnated the girl part...

That lawyer must be getting paid a sh*t load of money for him to actually have the balls to say "Yes, I'd absolutely let my kids be alone with Scamdusky.

What a freak show.
