Knicks · What the Knicks have to Offer FA (page 1)

nixluva @ 11/26/2011 6:11 PM
I'm not a capologist, but assuming the salary cap will be the same at about $58 mil, then the Knicks under the new CBA will be able to offer a 4 yr. $5 mil MLE to a FA Center. The Knicks cap figure is at about $62 mil.

Carmelo Anthony $18,520,000
Amare Stoudemire $18,217,705
Chauncey Billups $14,200,000
Ronny Turiaf $4,360,000
Renaldo Balkman $1,675,000
Toney Douglas $1,145,640
Derrick Brown $1,059,293
Bill Walker $916,100
Andy Rautins $788,872
Landry Fields $788,872
Iman Shumpert $1,302,000 ?
Josh Harrellson $788,872 ?
$62,703,061

I wonder what the Knicks thinking is. Are they going to look to only sign a 1 year deal with some lower level vet or sign a more permanent solution at C.

AnubisADL @ 11/26/2011 6:14 PM
Knicks are likely only going to sign 1 yr deals. So Im assuming we are going to get a stiff at best.
Childs2Dudley @ 11/26/2011 6:17 PM
One year deals. Knick would be stupid to take themselves completely out of the free agent picture in 2012, even if they don't have max cap space.

Balkman will get amnestied and hopefully Jeffries does not come back.

nixluva @ 11/26/2011 7:17 PM
Someone help me if this calculation is wrong. I'm still trying to understand how this all works. With the same 58 mil cap and if they amnesty Balkman the Knicks would be left with $40,799,099 for Melo, STAT and Iman. Then you also will have a ton of cap holds @ $473,604 each = $5,209,644.
So Knicks cap number would be $46,008,743 and that would leave them with $11,991,257 in actual cap space if my calculations are right.

Melo - $19,450,000
STAT - $19,948,799
Iman - $1,400,300
Balk - $1,675,000 Amnesty

$40,799,099
+$5,209,644 (11 capholds)
$46,008,743

$58,000,000 (Salary cap)
-$46,008,743
$11,991,257

there would only be 9 capholds, no?

If this article is accurate, I'm not sure we keep our full mid-level: http://espn.go.com/nba/story/_/id/728306...

Teams under the salary cap now will be allowed to go as far as $4 million over the luxury tax threshold without restrictions to utilize the $5 million mid-level exception. For example, if the luxury tax is set at $70 million and a team's payroll is at $68 million, they would be allowed to use the full $5 million.

However, if a team is at $69.5 million in allotted payroll, they can go as far as $74 million and thereby use only $4.5 million of the exception. In the previous offer, the owners wanted teams below the cap to be required to get back under the limit by Oct. 15 of the following year if they used an exception to go over.

Mid-level deals can be a maximum of four years every season in the agreement reached early Saturday morning, sources said. Owners wanted them to alternate between four-year deals one season and three-year deals the next.

Tax-paying teams, meanwhile, will be allowed to use a "mini" mid-level exception of $3 million every year, sources said. Those deals can be a maximum of three years. At one point, owners proposed that teams over the salary cap could not use any sort of exception.

Right they only have to have at minimum 12 players.

So the cap holds amount to $3,788,832 for 8 players, the 9th player will be the FA we sign, so we can subtract that cap hold.

$58,000,000
-$44,587,931
$13,412,069 (Knick 2012 cap space)

Hmm- doesn't look promising- I know CP wants to be here but would he really take that big of a hit salary wise? Our only hope is if he pretends he is willing to, so the Hornets do a Sign and trade with us after the season, maybe getting back Iman, Fields, Douglas or something, rather than lose him for nothing.

As for FA this season- there don't seem to be any good ones we could get for a 1 year deal- remember we'll be competing with Miami and Boston for any players looking to sign with a winner at a discount.

I wonder whats happening with Kelenna Azubuike- remember we cut him last year (I had forgotten until today, just liek I had forgotten Jordan Hill ever existed!) around Feb as he had to have knee surgery again due to them botching it the first time. I'm guessing he must be done, but he did tweet a few months ago he was rehabbing.

I wonder if we just bring Jerome Jordan over and hope he pans out. We really need a PF/C in the worst way- we need to get lucky with teams using the amnesty provision, but the fact teams don't have to use it this season really reduces the chances of anyone decent being cut.

That amnesty clause is an interesting thing. Since you can only use it once over a 10 year period I would think the Knicks would not use it to get themselves out of just one year on a bad contract (Balkman) unless it would mean freedom to sign a major player.

The Knicks would be foolish not to keep the amnesty as insurance for Amar'e or Melo. As long as we have it, should either of those two suffer a serious career threatening injury (or if Amar'es knee needs microfracture again), we can cut them, and sign a replacement top free agent- it's not worth wasting it on Balkman, who we might be able to trade next off season with money or a 2nd round pick. I'm so glad they put this amnesty provision in the cba, it really safeguards us if anything happens to our top players.

Ira @ 11/27/2011 1:45 PM
My understanding is that, if we don't use the amnesty, we get to keep it. It may make more sense to hold on to it in case a player with a big contract gets hurt and his game goes south than to use it on Balkman.
Moonangie @ 11/27/2011 4:44 PM
It's a no brainer: Keep it for "insurance" on Amare. Waste it on Balkman? That's just whack.

I think the only way they use it is if they need the money to sign Deron or CP3. As for the insurance thing, I don't think the franchise is thinking negatively like that. They will view any use of Amnesty as a positive move towards strengthening the team.

eViL @ 11/27/2011 6:03 PM
the knicks will be able to make room by waiving balkman and using the "stretch" provision to spread the cap hit over a few years. if they waive him next year, the cap hit would be in the $500K range. it would be terrible mismanagement to use the amnesty on balkman.
