The same reason Amare didn't take less to stay in Phoenix. These guys aren't billionaires. 5 million+ is a lot of money and NBA contracts are GUARANTEED while endorsement money is not.

Amare wanted the years, not necessarily the total $, and PHO was not offering that. Bosh, LeBron, Wade all took about exactly what will be offered to CP3 to go to the team with the players the wanted.

And if not CP3, then Deron will take the $.

When Chris Paul becomes available every team will put together packages to get him. I dont know what he will decide but expecting a guy to take millions less is reaching.

Deron Williams take a year less of guaranteed salary to play for the Knicks? NJ isnt S&T'ing him to the Knicks so he can get an extra year.

I just gave you 3 prime examples of guys who took millions less and you reply with "I dont know what he will decide but expecting a guy to take millions less is reaching."

That's called FAIL.

in fairness, those three guys all took less at the same time and they are all making the same amount. it's a little different than Amare and Melo making max money and expecting Chris to take less.

For the most part, CP3 can sign with NO for top $ and endless playoff losses or take less $ elsewhere.

The prescient has already been set for top flight free agents to take less than max, whether in a bunch of 3 at the same time or not - CP3 doesn't lose face because it didn't happen at the same time ala Miami, he just has bad luck timing. That's what it will take for him to team up with other players of his quality.

OR he just goes the Melo route and pouts all season.

Why didn't the nba instill a rule in the new cba where you can restructure deals like the NFL. Because the NBA doesn't have a hard cap?

i still think what happens is anybody's guess. however, i wouldn't expect him to sign for less merely because of his bad timing. i think part of what made the Miami thing work is that they all took less together at the same time. seems as if CP3's options are much more limited than previous superstars wanting to move. i would be very very surprised (pleasantly) if he signed with the Knicks on a discount. wherever CP3 goes, my expectation is that he's going to sign a max deal or very close to it.

yeah, that's probably a good guess. honestly, i think both the NBA and the players association would be against something like that. the owners would be mad because it would open the door for players to really have way more control. the players association would be mad because it would weaken their position for needing guaranteed deals if players were willingly forfeiting money owed to them.

I hope you're right and Paul considers because he wants it that bad. We would still have to renounce everyone on the team, but it would be nice to have Melo, Stat, CP3, Shump, Jordan, and resign Fields with the "room exception" once we hit the cap knowing he will get a large extension later.

Chris Paul's first choice is to play for the Knicks, sources say. He's willing to wait & sign w/NYK as free agent next summer.

I read that CP geta an exra 40 mil if he extends with the Hornets, very similar to the Melo situation of last season. Sounds like another 40 million reasons to go wherever the Hornets want him to go in a sign and extend.

Im on the "No Paul" side now.

1. He is a defensive liabilty. As Vescey (not the best hoop mind but he brings a point)said this morning, who guards Derrick Rose? Wade?
If this is about actually moving into the finals then we have to consider this.

2. I figure we will be stripped of assets for years. This is all about winning now. Im ok with that but we will have no depth and one of the three get injured, even tweeked, we are not top notch.

3. Paul has bad knees. He is max talent but not a max body.

4. Stat is better than Bosh (bosh is weight lifting, could get better? Stay healthier?) but Wade and Lebron are better than Melo/Paul.

5. Who is the big to protect Stat?

Is this about winning at the box office or winning on the court. Its tempting to get the third all-star spoke in the wheel but I'd pass.

I agree fully, and I am praying that Paul telling the Hornets he demands a trade to the Knicks is a rumor. I do not want to give up everything to have shaky knees paul, Shaky Knees and back Amar'e, and coast to coast Melo.

I know this is gonna piss a few people off, but Michael Kay brought up the hypothetical scenario of possibly trading Melo for Dwight Howard. IMO, you HAVE to do that, if the chance comes up. You might not find as elite a scorer as Carmello, but you can still find real good ones, but you'll never find someone as dominant in the paint, like Dwight. Then you say "F' Chris Paul, lets get Deron Williams." :-)

Of course you have to do that, but Carmelo is such a highly marketable player that I doubt Dolan would trade him. We'll see. If this Knicks team is only slight above .500 like I predicted and like they were last year, then Carmelo's and Amare's value will drop and the attractiveness of the Knicks to future FAs like Paul will drop too.

Well like I said, F' Paul. With that said, Dwight Howard is about 10X more marketable than Carmello.

Howard's not nearly as flashy as Carmelo and defense (Howard's specialty) doesn't sell jerseys. Howard is the MUCH better player, though. So you may be right. Last year, more Melo jerseys sold than Howard ones, although you'd expect a rise in sales when a player joins a new team.
Nalod @ 12/3/2011 10:59 AM
Sell jerseys is the goal then Knicks gotta do what they gotta do. Didn't know MSG and basketball was a loss leader to sell jerseys!
ramtour420 @ 12/4/2011 4:35 PM
The short answer is a passionate NO.
nixluva @ 12/4/2011 4:44 PM
NY would LOVE Howard. I don't see a deal happening, but if it did there would be an increase in excitement about the team not a drop.

I'm just wondering what the Knicks do if CP3 does in fact go to another team which is very likely. Should they spend some of their cap space on a better option at Center now? I'd be inclined to say yes. CP3 is a special case. I don't think it's gonna happen if they can find a good option to NY, like Orlando, LAC or LA. If he goes to one of those team then you can forget Howard and I see no way we land Deron. That would mean to me that the Knicks should just spend what they need to fill the chasm in the middle.
