Knicks · Can we rehabilitate Balky? (page 1)

Nalod @ 11/29/2011 11:18 AM

If my memory serves me at all I recall there was interest in Balkman by PHX (then coached by MDA) when we drafted him. I think Isiah took him early before PHX could.

Isiah might be no. 1 creepy dude (but no pedaphile charges)but the dude could draft.

given his talents, can Balky resurect his career and get in the rotation? Energy guy off the bench?

Maybe time to cut the dreads and regain his energy!

DurzoBlint @ 11/29/2011 11:36 AM
Renaldo was/is so hit and miss. Some games he'd have a noticeable impact and at others its hard to tell he even played.

For those saying we save the Amnesty for next year, here is what I read at sports illustrated:

Each team permitted to waive 1 player prior to any season of the CBA (only for contracts in place at the inception of the CBA) and have 100% of the player's salary removed from team salary for Cap and Tax purposes.

maybe they are wrong, but if so, Amare is not nearly the risk we thought he was

Does that mean you can waive 1 player per season?

The amnesty clause is for one player over the life of the CBA as I understood it. Also the team that implements it pays the largest portion of the amnestied players salary with no cap hit. Not sure if there is a cap hit for the team that picks up the player though.

no. it can only be used once. on one player. and his contract must have been agreed to during the prior CBA.

Papabear Says

Balk can't cut off his dreads because then people will start paying attention to his nose. LOL

Phoenix never indicated they wanted Balkman and even flat out denied that allegation after Isiah made it. To believe anything Isiah Thomas says is a mistake.

Isiah could draft? Channing Frye, Nate Robinson, Mardy Collins, Renaldo Balkman say what's up.

Yes, Renaldo Balkman. The same Balkman who is one of the worst players in the league. He cannot shoot, he cannot pass, he can't play defense, he is a lazy player who is constantly high and has 0 basketball IQ.

That Renaldo Balkman is the one you expect to resurrect his career? Is this a joke thread? D'Antoni banished him after 3 games last year to the point where he wasn't even sitting on the bench during games.

Balman was never good and never will be.

I think Renaldo is a good player. When he was here the first time, he was able to make an impact on the court. If memory serves, he played outstanding defense on Yao one game - certainly better than Eddy Curry could.

I think he has 2 problems. First, he might be smoking too much weed.

Second, and the real one - is he hasn't added anything to his game. Pure athleticism can only last so far. For MDA, he needed to develop a bit more between the ears, and not just be a run, jump, free for all kind of player.

Not to mention that usually a better player available when he got credit for drafting well

nychamp @ 11/29/2011 1:07 PM
No offense, OP, but this is a terrible thread. Balkman? Item number 54350 on the list of interesting Knick topics, just behind what brand of socks Herb Williams wears.
K22 @ 11/29/2011 1:20 PM
Isn't taking on reclamation projects one of the big reasons we got ourselves in the horrid situation we were in before?
smackeddog @ 11/29/2011 2:08 PM
Balkman always lacked skills, but his first year here he made up for it with hussle, effort and a high motor. Since then he's become lazy and made no effort to improve anything during any offseason. So what we're left with now is a player with no skills, who plays with little effort- he won't give us anything for the rest of his career as a Knick.

Exactly. Knick fans love revisionist history. Balkman will never make an Allstar appearance but to call him the worst player in the league....hell, he's not even the worst player New York has had. I'd take him over Howard Isley or Shannon Anderson.

When Balkman played his rookie season he was more useful than Jeffries thought neither can shoot, he was much better finisher around the rim.

Nalod @ 11/29/2011 2:14 PM
The dude is on the payroll. He is an NBA player. We saw potential a few years ago.

What doe anyone not understand about the word "rehabilitate"?

We are paying him or he is using our amnisty.

Nobody said we should go out and get him. HE IS HERE! He cambe back as part of the MeloDrama.

He can sit his ass on the bench all I care, but if a player can contribute and your paying him why the phuck not?

Anyone really get from this thread that I believe he is the missing link? The Glue? The one player who takes us to the next level?

Anyone really think we are one player away from making it to the finals and its Balky that is cockblocking us advancing from the conf. finals?

nixluva @ 11/29/2011 2:25 PM
The problem Balkman has is the presence of Derrick Brown.

Balkman has no real room to get in if we have Fields, Shawne, Brown & Walker in the rotation. All guys with well rounded games in comparison with Balkman who has no skills really.

there seems to be no ability to rehabilitate OUT OF D'Antoni's DOG HOUSE.

I don't know what it is but, once you get on his shyt list, there is no coming off. Even if you get traded to another team, let a few season pass like Steph did. Mike came in with the intention of giving Steph the business.

This is a coach that holds a grudge. Hell, he can be so arrogant at times I swear if the crowd started to chant for a player he was about to sub in, he would change his mind.

I don't know what Balk did, but the fact that coach plays Jarad over him is weird.

Childs2Dudley @ 11/29/2011 2:34 PM
What the heck are you talking about? Revisionist history? Potential? What? This guy was always a grade A scrub!

D'Antoni may have a crappy rotation but Balkman isn't a fault of his. Balkman never played for Karl either and he was playing guys who pretty much had similar skill sets like Yakhouba Diawara over him because they at least worked hard.

Balkman sucks. Sucked for us during the Isiah era, sucked for the Nuggets, sucks for us now. Once we release him he will never be on an NBA roster again.

Please, let this topic die.

See my post above for the truth about Balkman's future here, but as for this notion about MDA's doghouse, it's really about showing the coach your best from day one and also it's about numbers. the numbers don't favor some players and Balk is one of those guys. If you hustle and execute MDA will give you a shot. Fields, Shawne and Walker prove that. It's not about like or dislike. It's about what a player does to help the team win. What happened with Steph's career after leaving the knicks? Really the same question can be asked of a lot of the players in his "doghouse". Most went on to do NOTHING or continued to be mediocre! A very few have found some success. Overall i'd side with the coach in this instance based on the evidence.

no because your WRONG. Just cause the guy didn't play in Denver means absolutely nothing. It's not like George Karl is a logical guy. The guy runs a team worse than our current coach so, that does not validate your opinion.

When Balkman played for Isiah when he was coaching, the guy made an impact larger than Jarad has or, are you too young to remember that?? You have an opinion but it has nothing to do with reality.

Renaldo is a hustle energy guy who like Jarad can't shoot but is much more athletic and when HE PLAYED FOR US he showed a higher motor. No One at the time was calling for him to be benched which. should say all that needs to be said.

I also think some of it had to do with depth and his wanting to go with established players like Brick Mason. Also, he got caught up in the forward log jam with Bill Walker, Shawne William, Gallo, Chandler, then Anthony post trade. Where were the minutes???

RonRon @ 11/29/2011 3:24 PM
he cant possibly be any worse than Fishlips offensively. He isn't worth using the amnesty clause on. He can be used to play defense but Derrick Brown should get PT way before Balkman. If he wants to stay in the NBA, he has to start gaining some skills and become a good defender.

Balkman isn't anyone to be excited over and its fairly accurate what everyone said about him. However, there is a 0.5% chance that he can crack a rotation if he can play solid defense and injuries occur. He is a tweener, not really a SF but closest to a SF without a shot.
I wouldn't want to see him playing PF with our weak rebounding and size issues at center.

Its just not realistic that he would ever find minutes with

Melo
Shawne Williams
Derrick Brown

and these guys can also step in to play SF for minutes as well.

Bill Walker
Fields
Shumpert

I thought about his awhile back, I think we need to acquire a few better role players but with don't have many roster spots.
I have a hard time deciding an order but

Rautins
Balkman
Walker

are all in my possible cut list, especially if Shawne Williams is resigned. I would look to get another shooter or another player that has the size to guard the Lebron to replace him.
Brandon Wright, once a 8th pick, a Briggs favorite pick, had like a 5mill team option that I don't think the Nets picked up. He has freakish long arms with a 7'3 or 7'4 wingspan.
However, he hasn't produced or earn PT in the past couple of year due to injury. At 5mill, I wouldn't even think about him, but at the minimum, I think its a fair investment.

We just have qualifying offers to Brown, so if someone offers him a contract, I don't think we will match due to our attempt to add a 3rd player next summer.
We also don't know whats going on with Shawne Williams. He sounds like he really wants to be here and if he isn't too much money, I would like him back as well.

Shane Battier - FA now I love his game and think he would be fit well however, he is a luxury we cant afford to have right now.
Prince - FA

Tony Allen - FA 2013 can play a little of the PG, SG, or SF... great defender and tough.
Treva Ariza - PA 2013

Dunleavy - FA has had many injuries the past couple of years. There is a chance that he could do a one year deal to boost his stats up and I can see him fitting in New York as well.
Grant Hill - FA
Maurice Evans - FA is a veteran that can probably be acquired for the minimum or close to it as well.
Brandon Wright - not sure if he is a FA or not.

are the type of players I think we should target. Although Tony Allen will probably be a little too old by then. I would love Ariza back, he can give many players problems with his length and agility. I think Shumpert and Ariza would compliment each other defensively and would give Wade and Lebron a tough time, especially if we can add a Center to protect the rim. I would love to acquire Prince too but I don't see him taking a 1 year deal either.

or going for shooters

Anthony Parker
Peja
Kapono
Redd
James Jones

all 3 of these shooters, are great 3 point threats. I don't see Parker going for a veteran minimum and he will be courted by many contenders.

Shannon Brown
Antonio Daniels
Delonte West
Marques Daniels

These are a couple of tweeners at the PG/SG that might not cost too much.

I would love to improve our depth and 2-3 these all the guys above with another 1 center and 1 Pf/C.
I think there are some quality role players in this years FA. We just have to see who is willing to take a deal to come here at the right price.
We would also have to cut players in order to have a roster spot but I would like to remove the dead weight if we can acquire some of these guys.

Rautins
Walker
Balkman

What do you guys think? Are these guys worth a roster spot? Most of these players will probably be signed when the season starts.

For 2 big men I would look to sign include

Prizbilla
Aaron Gray
Jeff Foster
Sean Williams
McRoberts
Fesenko
