Knicks · who would you rather have nate ot barea (page 1)

knicks1248 @ 12/3/2011 10:42 AM
Berea (not sure I'm even spelling his name right) would be an ideal back up behind billups..he's not a great facilitator but he has tremendous speed and dosent take questionable shots...its a good change of pace..you could play him along side iman and shawne..what do you guys think ?
SupremeCommander @ 12/3/2011 10:48 AM
no interest in either. someone is going to give Barea a much bigger deal than he should get because of the Finals

We need a floor general. Barea is more of a scoring guard.

Agreed.

How is this even a question? Barrea was the second or third most important player for a team that won the championship last year. Nate is an exciting player but one who's been jettisoned by the Knicks, Celtics, and Thunder. Barrea is heads and shoulder a better player than Nate.

HUH? Or did you mean second or third most important player off the bench?

He was Instramental in a couple of those wins during their run. what was more impressive was the fact that he force LBJ into 2 striaght offensive fouls during a key stop down the stretch of the finals.

He's a energy guy which is a key role in any run at a championship. I personally don't think we need him right this minute with TD already holding down that role, but keep in mind, any trade that goes down for anyone of those 3 (howard, deron or paul) TD will be involve. Then what do you do?

nixluva @ 12/3/2011 6:23 PM
What I like about Berea is he plays with passion but also is smart. He really has learned how to attack teams and get off despite his size. He's just flat out effective off the bench. Nate has more natural talent, but he lacks the savvy to use it at this point. I don't now if Nate will ever get to the point where he can effectively use his talent. Berea IMO also defends better in a team concept. Nate is allergic to defense.
NYKBocker @ 12/3/2011 7:00 PM
I like Barrea. He would be a great fit with this team.
CrushAlot @ 12/3/2011 10:52 PM
I really hope those minutes go to Shumpert. I think you assure your team of another first round exit if you spend a lot on a guy like Barea and save at the center position by bringing Jeffries back. The Knicks need to see what they have in Shumpert. I also want to see how Douglas does now that he is healthy.
MaTT4281 @ 12/3/2011 10:58 PM
I'd take Barea over Nate, but I'm content developing TD instead of bringing JJ to NY. He really stepped up after the Melo trade, despite playing with a bad shoulder. Give him another year under Billups (or at least most of a year).
DurzoBlint @ 12/5/2011 8:03 AM
is this even debatable. Barea is a better fit than N8, better defender, better passer and just seems to be a normal person unlike N8 who, I expect to be little more than a footnote in NBA history in a few seasons.

I agree about Barea - doubt we can even get him- but TD has been hurt a lot. He guts through it, but I'm starting to think he might be made of glass.

RonRon @ 12/5/2011 11:41 AM
Barea, but hes a luxury we don't need. I am happy with Billups, Iman, TD. We have to look for cheap contracts that wont eat up our salary cap. Even with Billup's contract ending in the summer, I would target the cheaper PG's. If Nash could come cheap, I would love to acquire him to mentor Shumpert and TD. Then I would even look at Kidd, Sessions, and look at the best cost effective PGs. We should concentrate on the center position and see how our younglings develop and go from there. I don't believe we need an all star PG. I don't believe in Dantoni's system, especially with Melo on the team, I don't want to build around it.

I would spend majority of our cap on a defensive center, another PF/C, 2 SG/SF that can play both ends and hit be a 3 point threat, another G that can is a dead eye shooter.

We have to spend the rest of our cap wisely. I wonder how much these veterans will cost. These guys made plenty of money in their careers, while they might not all sign for
near minimum deals, some of them might, and some would be in the MLE money for 2-3 years.

KG
Odom
Duncan

Nash
Kidd
Ray Allan

I some of them would be pretty cheap, however, they will join the team's with the greatest potential to win. With Bulls and Thunder with a nice core and being under the cap, I don't believe we would have a better chance then them. However, if we can get 1 or 2 major pieces, it would attract them.

For the younger centers, depending on how they develop, these guys can be 10m+ to max.

McGee
Hibbert
Deandre Jordan
Matt Gasol

In general, player's rarely leave their team with bird rights, so its highly unlikely to obtain them unless they are coming off an injury and are in doubt like

Greg Oden

RonRon @ 12/5/2011 11:43 AM
in previous years, the MLE could only be used when the team is over the cap already. A team can't use the MLE to make them go over the cap. Does anyone know if this his changed with the new CBA? This makes a huge difference.
RonRon @ 12/5/2011 12:12 PM
Camby would go in to that aged veteran list as well.
RonRon @ 12/5/2011 12:30 PM
these are probably the lower end centers, I like Hickson but King's will probably match unless we overbid for him. But they

Cousins, Whiteside both under contracts
with
Hickson RFA
Jason Thompson RFA

so its possible they will probably let one go and possibly even both depending on what they draft/sign.

Chris Kaman UFA

Hickson RFA

Spencer Hawes UFA
Jason Thompson RFA

Kaman's value will depend on how productive he will be this year. I don't really want to throw the rest of the cap on him but he might be the most productive and one of the rare FA's available.

If Philly doesn't amnesty Brand, which they might not, because they still have to pay him and they might not attract any major talents. They still have

Vucevic
Spencer Hawes, showed some shot blocking and 3 point shooting in the King's.

Elton Brand
Speights

these guys are closer to PF, but can play some minutes at center.

Its possible they will let Hawes go, if we can't attract any talent and don't want to spend too much. He will probably be in the MLE money range.

If we can't get any attractive players, how do you guys feel about offering the rest of our cap to attract 3 of the veteran players. It's possible we can sign 3 if we offer them the max of 3-4 year deals. Of course I would have to be the right combination of players, I wouldn't look to add 2 PG's in Nash and Kidd. But we would have to look hard at signing these aged veterans for quantity and depth. I don't see the younger centers being not matching unless they get hurt or don't have a productive year.
But if I had to choose between a Greg Oden, if he still shows signs of injury during this shortened season for the rest 10m- the rest of our cap, we have to look at getting
3 veterans instead. If we can acquire any of these players with the Bi Annual or the veteran's minimum, its a no brainer.
If not we would might have to entice them with 3-4 year contracts.
I don't see them coming for the veterans minimum, if they go to any teams for the minimum, it would be to Miami, Bulls, Dallas, Thunder, and possibly other teams that improve their roster before they look at it with the Knicks. It could even be teams like Clippers and Portland. So I think we have to lure them with more money and/or longer contracts and by attracting 3 of them together. Its possible Duncan will get a 10 million per year and 2-3 year contract to stay in the Spurs.

My question to you all is your opinion on acquiring these guys if we can sign 3 of them but it would be 3-4 year deals? Possibly 4 if one is willing to sign with the Bi annual exception...

no way to nate or barea.

if we're going to get a veteran on the cheap, it'll be after chris paul signs.

if that happens, i'd love to get marcus camby.

RonRon @ 12/5/2011 1:49 PM
I am thinking its a similar strategy, Miami is doing. By adding Shane Battier, it prevents another team from getting a solid defender against Lebron. We prevent championship/playoff bound teams from improving their roster with solid vets. While I think the Heat need a center more than Battier, that's another story. They should target

Dalembert - which looks like he is trying not willing to settle for anything less than a max MLE money and is looking for even better.
Kris Humphries - solid double double guy

before they add a wing for the full MLE.
