Knicks · if all of the stars are off the board next summer..... (page 1)

....which looks like it could be the case, who do we get? we can still get better with our cap room. there are still good point guards like nash or i am really down with bringing ray felt back. however, we still need a good sg and a center whihc is important. who else is available?
AnubisADL @ 12/6/2011 9:43 AM
We will be in serious trouble if that's the case.

Why would the Knicks be in "serious trouble"? The team would have cap space and still have STAT and Melo, not to mention Iman, Fields and TD. All this team has to do is make smart pick-ups to fill needs.

crzymdups @ 12/6/2011 9:50 AM
it's unfortunate that the center lottery is happening right now. the knicks desperately need a center and a younger point guard. among several other things (backup PF, more shooters, etc)

To be a little above average.

If all the stars are off the table they do us a favor.

Isn't it better to have two stars playing with a balanced roster than 3 stars playing with scrubs or worn out divas?

Is it at all possible to have any organic development of players?

Is it at all possible to trade espablished players for picks and youth?

Lakers will rebuild on the fly or at least they have the abilty to. Not championship contenders but if they can get serious value, for bynum, Pau and Odom like Dwight Howard they reboot things for a while.

Remember, Kobe was not Kobe when he was drafted. Taken at the 13th spot he was traded for Vlade when Vlad was still pretty good.

They took a chance, they were patient, and then got in prime Shaq.

Im not sure we are serious contenders even with Stat-melo-Cp3 because of who else we DON"T have.

I feel like the Knicks desperatly need a floor general. Billups might have the personality to run this but he doesnt have the game. He's 2 steps slower than his Det prime days and he's not a great playmaker. An elite 2-way PG is really the piece that will make this trio. The Suns competed for a title w/ Amare, Nash and parts. With decent (size) role players around Amare/Melo and a young uptempo PG in MDAs offense no reason Knicks couldnt do same.

CP3 is a the key.. it will really come down to how important playing in NYC is with Melo

This team is not going to be a little above average! What is wrong with some of you guys? I know I'm usually more positive than most of us but come on! This team is most certainly one of the better teams in the East. What makes you think this team would end up only a little above average?

i think CP3 would be the key. but i think there are other ways to build this, too. even with a great PG, the hole in the middle is going to be massively important to fill.

can they fill it with a three-headed monster of jorts, turiaf and jerome jordan? (likely jeffries plays a role there, too)

that's absurd

besides the max players, the following players are also free agents, and two could likely be signed:

Ray Allen
Kevin Garnett
Antawn Jamison
Jason Kidd
Jason Terry
Andre Miller
Goran Dragic
Chris Kaman
Jameer Nelson
Steve Nash
Marcus Camby
Raymond Felton
Gerald Wallace
Tim Duncan
Antonio McDyess
Leandro Barbosa
Mehmet Okur
Mo Willaims

No defense, not a lot of team play, our PGs aren't good distributers and make bad decisions (That includes Billups), no consistent shooters besides Amar'e and we have no clue if MDA is right for this team or not.

To be fair, Billups said he need to come into this season lighter and ready to run. Billups might still be the man but is he the man for the MDA SSOL flying circus? Take a guy like Felton and put him in the right situaton his production got much higher and he was playing at near top 10 pt guard levels for a while.

SSOL is not easy on the point.

Nix, We have a pt guard who after 27 games had to slow down and he broke. Remember Chauns and the knicks had to slow the pace down as the team was not able to play the system.

Our starting center is Turiaf. This is not good Nix is it? Fields caved with Melo, and we don't know if he can play with him.

And Shump is a rookie who has to prove himself before trusted.

Turiaf is good for how many minutes? Stats back?

We are not spending any money so tell me Nix, how do you really see things?

The roster as it stands now is only improved by health (TD, Billups) and Im assuming Stat is at near MVP levels he was at last year. Melo should be good for 25 and 7 every nite but statistics alone does not win games.

Forgot to mention the health part. How silly of me. Especially with Amar'e.

jazz74 @ 12/6/2011 11:03 AM
kaman would be a good fit as well as ray felt. ray allen is good for a one year deal but rather have michael redd. however, kaman and redd have health issues.

Many of us see Carmelo as a good but flawed one-way player. I haven't seen the stat but it would not surprise me if his missed FGs plus turnovers per game led the NBA by a sizable margin.

Amare is excellent but is a high injury risk.

That's so 18 months ago. We played excellent defense in the first few games against Boston last year. If we hadn't lost key players to injury, we could have stretched them to seven. And we had little time to create chemistry. Now will these guys play good defense again this year? Time will tell.

It's something I've been guilty of too, but your key words are "If" and "Injury". You have to count the elements my dude, especially when considering that one of those injured players has surgically repaired knees.

Melo plays defense when he's 100% motivated, kinda like Marbury.

Melo is better than Marbury but there are many alarming similarities
nixluva @ 12/6/2011 12:28 PM
Billups didn't just breakdown, he was injured in a collision with HUGE D. Howard. Billups is still a very good player and not far off what he's always been in terms of production. He's not as quick as he once was, but his game isn't really predicated on quickness. He just plays smart. Besides this team hasn't been a real MDA running team since he came here. We haven't had the PG's to run the offense at full tilt. This has been more of a half court team than pure running team anyway. The Knicks play fast but not cuz they run at every opportunity like the Suns used to even off of makes.

If there's no trade for CP3, then we keep all the players we already had and add to that group to fill in areas of need. That team is bound to be improved over last years team.

No defense?
We don't know who the Knicks will have a Center and that will go a long way towards determining what kind of D we can play.

No Team Play?
Since when has a D'Antoni team been known for a lack of team play? Sure if you just throw any group of guys together the 1st thing you notice is that they aren't in synch and there's no chemistry. That's why you have Training camp and a regular season.

Our PG's aren't Distributors?
That can be said about many guards before they play for D'Antoni, but we've seen over and over how some guards are able to improve their assist numbers playing for Mike. Duhon jumped from 4 to 7 assists and Felton from 5.6 to 9 assists.
Billups didn't have the same opportunity as they did. Maybe with more time he can also show improvement. TD isn't a PG, but we also have Iman so perhaps between the 2 we can have just enough to get the job done.

Melo is a good but flawed player? Who are we comparing him with? If you compare him to the best of the best he falls short, but he doesn't have to be the ultimate in order to help this team win. His teams always win! He may not be perfect but I think playing here will help him to refine his game. He played with more determination on D than i've ever seen from him and being in NY has had a positive effect on him. You can tell he knows this is a bigger stage and people expect more from him.

STAT is an injury risk?
Sure he's had some health issues but he also has given his all for this franchise and over the last 2 years he's played 82 games for the Suns and then 78 for the Knicks last year. He was healthy in game 1 of the Playoffs. The back injury seems to be a fluke. The longer off season and shorter season should help STAT a lot. We'll probably see the team give him plenty of rest so i'm not as concerned about his health.
