Knicks · Not Confident with Douglas or Fields in big situation (page 1)

did they really improve that much in 6 months. I would not mind adding Michael Redd to start with Bibby. You know these guys aren't going to take too many minutes away and might be hurt or kept rested for most of the season for the majority regular season. But having shooters like that in the rotation will help alot come playoff time.

playoff roster
Bibby Redd Melo Stat Chandler
Douglas Walker Fields Jeffries Jordan
Harrelson Shumpert

Shumpert and Toney are going to play a lot.

I don't want the corpse of Redd. Bibby can play spot minutes.

Iman and Toney are a DEMON-like defenders. They're going to make their hay creating turnovers because they'll have more freedom to play the passing lanes with Tyson in back.

I see Coach Mikes (Woodson and D'Antoni) playing Iman and Toney side by side quite a bit. Shumpert is 6'6" with a crazy wingspan. Toney is 6'3" and a tenacious defender. It could potentially be one of the best defensive backcourt units in the league, again, helped by the fact that they know Tyson has their back.

I do worry about the lack of a veteran playmaker in a big spot, but hopefully Bibby (or Baron) can fill that.

To me, it remains to be seen if Fields can fit in with this team. I think he's smart enough to figure out what he needs to do. But right now, he doesn't seem like as much of a fit as Iman and Toney.

Nor do I think you should have confidence in them. However, let's see what they can with a great front court that will be intact from the get go. I just vomited a little bit in my mouth thinking of a Bibby/Redd starting backcourt. That probably would have worked in 2005 but now?

if you don't give them a chance how do you know?

sometimes you just have to trust your young guys or else you keep on recycling really bad veterans just for the sake of consistency, even when it's consistently bad.

for better or worse it's going to be some incarnation of fields, TD and iman. if bibby plays a major role then i'm pretty sure we're in huge trouble...

Defensively they should be nice, but I believe the Knicks will need offensive help in the backcourt. Baron could be that guy, but if not look for a deal for a two guard by the deadline.

As I am thinking about this season - I think our young backcourt might actually be very good.

Two reasons - first, they're young, and they'll hopefully be fresher than others all season.

Second, with the shortened season, training camps and exhibition games, I think there will be a greater need to exploit broken plays - and Douglas and Iman can do just that on the defensive end, and hopefully, score some easy points off steals and turn overs.

Just as long as you guys except Shumpert is not a point guard....Bibby is the 3rd PR guard, vet/extra coach on the bench. Douglas is not a point guard and Baron Davis will be the starter if he clears waivers...

Landry Fields got Shumpeert breathing down his back. Walker is still around.

Alaln Hahn just brought up Troy Murphy. He would be a nice addition as insurance for Amare

The three point shooting makes Murphy a good fit too. Plus, he can play limited minutes at center. If he can rebound at 80 percent of the level that he did earlier in his career, I say go for it.

Just having Redd in the locker room could help. its like having Allen Houston. Redd is 32 not old. when healthy, he is best option at SG next Shumpert Fields Walker. He will probally better opt than BD considering BD will be out until 8 weeks heal 4 weeks to get ready. Having Redd in just the 4th quarter with 6 min left would change the game. This team as it is now will win 40 games in this season, with Redd, we can win 50 games out of 66 games.
So if you were to give 6 minutes a games to Redd does that take minutes away to develop Fields Walker, I say no! With 5 games a week nobody should play more 30 minutes a night until the playoffs come around

Murphy is better opt than Williams. because of his size rebounding ability

I agree that we could use a shooter, but I don't see why we should pick Redd over Peja in a bench role.
Peja showed he could still play last year while on Dallas vs Redd that hasn't really played for 3 years or more?

I like Fields but I don't think he has the size, speed, or athleticism, to guard

Lebron
Wade
Battier

I hope, he worked on his handle, to go with foot work, quickness, and speed. To go with being a consistent wide open 3 point threat shooter...

During the half way season mark, I would love an opportunity for Iman to take over the PG position, at the very least, get a look or couple starts.
If we can add a legit SG to harass the caliber's above, it could be sick.
Don't forget Iman was brought in to play defense first, while being able to possibly the PG by Dantoni and the recruiting staff.
He can be a nightmare for many PG's with his size and speed, to go with that athleticism and lock down defender mentality

While, he probably is the best guard we have to guard legit SG's for high caliber players at this point.
We would first need to have another SG capable of holding it down defensively, and have the skills of a SG offensively,
*grant hill would have been nice, but of course Chandler is 10x >* Grant Hill

Grant hill can
hit the wide open 3's
great mid range jump shooter
can penetrate and finish
can handle the ball, playing Point forward, would help TD out and give us a nice rotation to have with Iman and Hill taking the pressure off TD.
can guard 3 positions in PG, SG, SF

is a glue player and know's Dantoni's offense
great player and veteran on the court, off the court, and in the locker room

While I know he could be improved this year, judging from watching Fields last year, he didn't have that combination to guard those caliber of players.
Those guys are great players, Field's is a nice rotation player, but to ask him to guard those all stars and stars, isn't fair to him.
Last year, we didn't have Chandler, so maybe it could work out this year better at the very least...

However, Grant Hill should be a clear upgrade, and this is why I am upset...

after the Amnesty of Billups, trade of T Chandler, Turiaf, and Rautins, withdrawing Derrick Brown. We should have a nice portion of money to use in the 4-5m range....
instead we signed 2 veteran min contracts of JJ and Bibby, and signed Shump, Jorts, and Jordan to put us over the cap.
I love the acquisition of Green and Hunter

All of these guys could have waited, another day or 2, but we give a verbal agreement out
while we look to find the best talent to offer, the room left over for other players 4-5m *which could be for 1 or 2 players and as high as 4 years*

not including the 2.5 exemption we got for going under the cap which could be a 2 year deal.

I have no idea what to expect to be honest. If I have any expectations I think Douglas will be good if he stays healthy.

It sounds like MDA wants to run the half court sets mostly through Melo which will make Toney a wing scorer which is a damn good role for him. I think he will be fine pushing the ball in transition. He WILL struggle closing games but thats simply experience. We need the veteran guys to help him out.

I have not seen Shumpert yet. Will have a better idea after this weekend.

I dont think Fields is a starting NBA shooting guard. He's a smart player and has some skills but I see him as a nice bench guy.

I will say the Douglas/Fields/Shump trio is a fun group to root for. Good guys, hard working blue collar types, no primadonnas.... good guys to go to war with. Lets hope they play well

I think he going to be a Clipper Aaron Afflalo is would be great trade target

Douglas Fields Balkman 2.5 exception for s&t scenario 5yr 36mil

for PG Arenas BD Bibby to rotate

Affalo surprised me last year after the Melo trade, he was still produced at a high level.
He is a combo guard, with the ability to get his shot off.
In fact, he was one of the players the took the most shots and lead their offense a lot of times.
Denver was very deep and talented, with a lot of speed, penetration, and shooters to go with good defense and rebounding.
I have never seen that many players ,like 7-10 players, get so many double double continually, get W's after acquisitions of so many different players, and all in limited minutes.
*around 20-25min* each* it was so spread out like it was a Xbox game....

However, with Gallo and Wilson Chandler, has better size, but not the speed Affalo has.
Also with Al Harrington, capable of playing both forward spots with Kmart and Nene to go with Gallo, and Chandler. With Mosgov*didnt get any pt and got injured* Birdman,Nene at C
There is also J.R. Smith, who could get his shot off and arguably more talented than Affalo.
He was remained a better 6th man, while Melo was taking majority of the shots but without him, I figured he would get the start.
Even Felton vs Lawson or Affalo, was producing as 10 PG in the league with the Knicks.
Everyone was so hot, it was hard to decide who to play or bench, till injuries started to happen.

Redds coming off of 2 major knee surgeries...how can you not get Allan Houston flash backs..

I think Douglas has been solid in clutch situations. Landry as well (up until the playoffs). I'm more worried about their overall skill level then their performance in big situations. That's Amare and Carmelo's job. These two have proven they can knock down the open shot when asked to.

rather than Jamal Crawford, how about J.R. Smith as a unrestricted FA when he is done with China?
He does have a lot of talent and I would keep this 2.5m exception and not offer it to veteran minimum guys like Mo Evans.
I would wait patiently if Shawne Williams decides to go across the Hudson with the Nets.

J.R. Smith is undeniably a talent, coming out of H.S. before he was probably mentally mature enough to play in the league.
He can penetrate and has finish with his athletic ability. He actually has a pretty good handle and first step too, but he isn't known to be a High BBall IQ or team player...
He can be a cancer but at that price, we can afford to bench him, if he is one.

I don't know if Denver will part with Affalo, highly doubted, with some of their talented roster in China or unrestricted.
They played very well after the trade and were on a great run till a couple of injuries.

I think there is a better chance to steal a player from New Orleans with Ariza because he has a 3 year deal with last being a player option.
As David Stern said, they seem to be looking to rebuild thru the draft. So if they do decide to blow up their team for future draft picks and tank, its a possibility.
As their team stands now, its possible they can do some damage, which would hurt their own draft pick.
David Stern to me, seems like he is more in the model of rebuilding their team like the Thunder, thru the draft, with assets.
However, with their current team, they have some adequate players. I look for them to try to go on a early run with the first 5-10 games.
After they show the value of the remaining assets, of

Kaman *still a legit center* with last year of contract, the way Center's got payed this year, I don't see him coming resigned for cheap and risk losing him for nothing...
Ok4 *which was probably a liability without a true center, playing the undersized center himself for majority of his career* can become an asset instead of a bad contract
Eric Gordon
Carl Laundry - 1 year deal for under 9m

Ariza
Jack
Bellini

I look for them to fully evaluate their team and roster, deciding who they want to keep, and who can gain them the best value of thru trades with picks.

or

If they are happy with what they have and think they can risk letting players walk this off seasons with Kaman, Eric Gordon *RFA*, and Laundry *at deadline with 1 year deal*

and

they can claim waivers on all these amnesty players coming in, being capable of acquiring cheap talents in. I don't understand if they would be able to trade these players, if
they have more than 1 year on contracts, next year. And at what price, their amenesty bid price or their full salary?

don't 4get

they will be looking to sell the New Orleans to a buyer, for the lowest price possible, so the owners can make an investment, so would want draft picks, and cap space, with assets.

for Jack, Ariza, and Bellini, they are good players in a good team, but don't expect them to carry the work load without Kaman or Eric Gordon...
