Knicks · Our team depth charts (page 1)

mattshaw78 @ 12/16/2011 1:34 PM
Centers: Tyson Chandler, Jared Jeffries, Jerome Jordan, Josh Harrellson, Chris Hunter

Power Forwards: Amare Stoudemire

Small Forwards: Carmelo Anthony, Bill Walker, Renaldo Balkman, Devin Green

Point Guards: Mike Bibby, Iman Shumpert

Shooting Guards: Landry Fields, Toney Douglas

So it looks like our 2nd units will be pretty thin on the scoring side in my opinion

shizzee @ 12/16/2011 1:48 PM
if you replace Jeffries for Troy Murphy this solid 2nd unit offensively with Murphy go to guy, Bibby perimeter shooting, options Jordan in the post or Walker and Shumpert on the wings

Douglas Fields Melo Stat Chandler-S
Bibby Shumpert Walker Murphy Jordan-B

RonRon @ 12/16/2011 1:59 PM
Chris Hunter is at the very least between Jerome and Josh, i think without another PF/C besides Amare *doesn't count because we need a backup*

Fishlips? need I say more?

Jordan
Jorts they both can contribute very limited minutes, however at center alone with their spreed. Jorts might play PF, not sure about Jordan.

Green should also be at least b4 Balkman, with Walker out with the groin injury. He is an underdog and has yet to finally find a hope in the NBA.
Anther true journey man, with Walker out, he should at least be signed till Walker is back or till we will up our roster.

Hunter, is an athletic 6'11 player. I don't have much information on hi, other than he is another player that has yet to find a NBA home. Like Green, he is easily the most athletic player of the bench at the PF or Center position. Until we find another talent with his size and athleticism, I think its a position that we have to keep.
I am not sure if he is more of a scorer or defender. He seems to have good foot work and some post moves, to go with his physical abilities. I think he can score at the very least and has the physical tools to be a rebounder/ shot blocker/ and defender. How good he is on the defensive end, would be the better question.

Both of these guys played in Europe, in which translates to a more team oriented playing style. It also emphasizes the fundamentals of the game with constant screens and cuts.
I they both will make the team at least for the start of the season, till we can fill out our roster with more talent. I hope they can be improve and be part of the Knicks
future, as they make a good story, as they would appreciate a home in the NBA. It can't possibly get better for them, finding a home in the NBA at the garden, and being a legit title contender. It kind of reminds the rookies and our super stars, its a privilege to be in the NBA, and to appreciate the years left in it. These guys have to work hard at practice, the keep their jobs, and perform for probably another 10 day contract, while its gravy for the majority of the rest of the guys. Just watching them work, sometimes sticking with the basics and fundamentals that all stars something 4get while in the spotlight. Whether its setting a pick or passing, cheering for your team mate, or earning a step for your team mate, and helping them defend. They have nice characters on the team to go with the talent.

Target, these guys plz Grunweld, or if anyone in the Knick management looks here, at the very least take a look in to it...

to my eyes it looks like way too many centers

Troy Murphy would be a good backup, if he can be had. However, I think people are being foolish trying to get rid of Jefferies. As bad as he is, when it comes to putting the ball in the basket, he can still play some defense and set some good picks. He's the skinny version of Chris Dudley, so if you don't like Jared then obviously you didn't like Chris... and to me, Jared is better than Chris. We need him coming off the bench and Troy Murphy would be a good way to make him a little better b/c Troy can put the ball in the basket a little... and grab rebounds.

Bippity10 @ 12/16/2011 2:14 PM
Looking at the list of forwards and centers why do I get the funny suspicion that we are going to get a heavy dose of Jared again this year
Bippity10 @ 12/16/2011 2:15 PM
Also, didn't the coaching staff say that right now Douglas is the starting PG?
DurzoBlint @ 12/16/2011 2:17 PM
Jorts is a Power Forward. I'd say he was an old school type of player if not for being able to hit the 3ball. He's a banger, and a Walsh move so I am excited to see him back Amare up.
Allanfan20 @ 12/16/2011 2:17 PM
Douglas is the PG and we are definitely going to see Jared. Time to jump on the get Murphy here bandwagon.
Allanfan20 @ 12/16/2011 2:18 PM
Is Jorts Jordan or Harrelson... and why do people all him that?

I think his teammates started calling him that due to the short denim shorts he has an affection for.

Jean - Shorts = Jorts

y2zipper @ 12/16/2011 5:07 PM
Jorts is Harrelson.

The depth chart probably looks like this...

Douglas/Bibby
Fields/Shumpert/Walker
Melo/Walker/Balkman
Stat/Hunter
Chandler/Jordan/Jorts/Jeffries

I'd like to see an actual pg and some proven depth at PF or Center

rvwink @ 12/16/2011 5:38 PM
Here my attempt

Center-- Chandler----- JJ/Jorts/Hunter/Jordan fight it out to see who is the backup.
PF------ Stat---------Jorts/Hunter/JJ compete for backup minutes
SF----- Melo---------Walker/Devin Green/Fields (If Shumpert can handle significant guard minutes this year.)
SG----- Fields-------Shumpert/Bibby
PG----- Douglas------Shumpert/Bibby

MDA likes guards to be interchangeable and forwards to be interchangeable as well. Our greatest weakness presently is finding someone to take on the backup role at PF. Ideally it would help if he was defense minded and also could shoot from the outside. Can Jorts do it?

I think this depth chart makes sense, for now. The big questions are what will the situation at point guard look like in a month or two, and how much is Shumpert going to contribute.

To me, it is a virtual must to get another experienced point guard. I know TD was injured last year, but I can't help but remember how our offense would absolutely disintegrate when he was running the show. We are too good up front to mess up the team by not having a solid point run things. Ideally, TD is a reserve player who can play the point if needed for a few minutes. But a starting PG? Not from what I have seen.

From what I read, Shumpert could be a player right off the bat. But he still has not played a game yet, so he is still an unknown.

So if you look at that depth chart above, those two guard spots are mighty shaky at this point.

crzymdups @ 12/17/2011 1:15 AM
This is what I want to see.

PG - Baron Davis, Mike Bibby
SG - Iman Shumpert, Toney Douglas
SF - Carmelo Anthony, Landry Fields
PF - Amar'e Stoudemire, Travis Outlaw/Jared Jeffries
C - Tyson Chandler, Jorts, Jerome Jordan

while Baron Davis, would be great if hes healthy, hes not...
we are limited on roster spots as is
by the time he comes back, he might he will most likely be out of shape.
Iman might be already the starting PG by then, it could be 3months away, a herniated disc/back is serious....

RonRon @ 12/17/2011 3:55 AM
I am just sick of being used for leverage for a contract...
If he was serious about having interest to come back
I would prefer him to say something like
I look to do what I can to rehab and get in game shape.
I look forward to putting myself in a position in which I can help a contender and would love to join the NYKs...

rather

than trying to make a contract over another contract that is paying him over 10M and not being able to perform...

In the TV practice session that we just saw, several players talked about maintaining positive energy throughout.

It seems to me that players who have just been amnestied are likely the bearers of negative energy. Why to you pay 8 to 11 million a year for a player and then buy him out. It seems likely that he has become a cancer on your team, and you need to get the cancer out. I think we need to look really carefully at the potentially cancerous players that we can get cheap, and make really sure that they are worth having. For example, what happens if MDA decides that Iman should be the point guard. How does Baron Davis react to that situation? Do we know in advance if players like Davis and Outlaw are committed to being "team players"?

I honestly think it has more to do with cap space.
misterearl @ 12/17/2011 8:47 AM
How Deep?

Not deep enough for the sprint if an injury occurs.

Shumpert is quality but raw.

Devin Green has an opportunity. Can he play defense?

Harrelson has yet to learn how NBA refs will call a game. Rookies with size face potential foul trouble.

Chris Hunter is insurance.

Jerome Jordan is learning on the fly.

Risky. If the first two of this five make the rotation it will be reason enough to celebrate. The other three are huge question marks.

"It appears the Knicks are hoping that of Jordan, Harrellson, Shumpert, Hunter, and Green, one or more will be productive enough to assist the team. If none are able to break into the rotation, don’t be surprised if the team rotates replacement-level players like it did in 2009.

That year 23 different players saw action in a Knicks uniform, including the late-season call-ups Mouhamed Sene, Cheikh Samb, Coutney Sims, Joe Crawford, and Demetris Nichols.

This compressed season will force N.B.A. teams to use their reserves more frequently, and unfortunately for the Knicks, this could expose their lack of depth.

Cap space? You can buy more eggs if you buy them on sale. But doesn't that increase the chances that one or two of the eggs might be bad? When you buy a player at a huge price discount from his last contract, don't you think there are substantial risks involved with that purchase? Why would you bring in a player with a chance for jeopardizing the team's chemistry? One guy who is complains or simply isn't trying, is enough to negatively affect the performance of the rest of the team.

There are almost an unlimited number of players we can get for the league minimum. But we need to chose wisely and not just think about how much potential bang we can get for our bucks. It is amazing how many really good NBA players, have reached a point in their careers, where they have more than enough money, and they simply longer are willing to put in a full effort anymore. Buyer beware.
