Knicks · The Iman Shumpert Fan Club Line Forms to The Right (page 2)

Nope but we can call him Gump. Run Iman run!.

Its clear that Iman is not a point guard. But he is a damn good shooting guard. He looked good with Bibby out there. He's a gem.

Shump is the goods for sure. Plays with so much confidence, like he belongs. Just a matter of time before he unseats Fields....

Did (cough) shizzee have the nerve to compare Shumpert to Larry Hughes?

Larry Hughes?

That's some shizzee, fo' sho'.

Larry Hughes?

The passion, physique and high pulse rate of the Iman separates him from the talented, frustrating and "play when I feel like it" Mr. Hughes

Basketball is Basketball

"Playing in a lot of those lockout games (with NBA veterans) helped me," (Shumpert) said. "A lot were older guys that were trying to stay in shape. So I wasn't playing in lockout games with a lot of rookies, I was playing with a lot of veterans. When you play with a lot of veterans, you've got to pick things up fast. I think my transition was a little different than most rookies. It definitely helped."

“Basketball is basketball,” said Shumpert. “Nothing changes. The arena and the jerseys change, but basketball is basketball.”

and this

"He can get a shot any time he wants to. He shoots the ball pretty well. He can definitely defend. He's athletic, he's long. There's a lot of good stuff. Again, this is just one baby step and he's got to do it a lot, but you can tell that the kid can play."

- Mike D'Antoni

IMO Iman is a guy that you can understand getting lost in the shuffle by draft scouts. He wasn't on a winning team and he kind of just crept up on the scene. Sometimes drafting is about timing too. You have to have an eye for guys that are riding under the radar. Iman's physical talents are at Elite level. Iman's BB Skills are refined enough already to be productive on this level, but it's his energy and mental strength that seem to be what sets him apart from the usual mid 1st rd pick. If he continues to keep working as hard as he has so far, he will be successful.

Agree 100%. Fields is horrible. Just a matter of time.

Can't wait to get my jersey

Lol I love Shump's tweet..."Lol I apologize for shooting a layup on the break haha. That's the last time...next time I'll be clear for takeoff. I was too excited to think." Love this kid already!

I haven't been this excited about a rookie since Mark Jackson. There is just something about his game that's "different".

Yep he had a great outing but it was one game in preseason. I was happy to see him play at the level he did and I hope we can see great things from him. But let's not pencil him into the HOF yet. He is a rookie and has a lot to prove, I would be ecstatic if he does. One thing I don't want to see him do is play PG, I think that would tsunt his growth. Guy is a natural SG with hardcore defensive skills, we need to stop pretending we don't need a starting PG. We need to acknowledge that is our biggest gap and fill it by getting BD if possible. We already forced Landry to play 2G and I think in the long run it was harmful to his game. Now he doesn't know what he is doing out there. Not everyone can do everything, and just because he can throw an alley oop or two does not automatically make him a PG. I don't care that he played PG in college either, he could have played any of 1,2 or 3 on tha team. He was their best scorer and needed the ball. Here we need someone to set up the offense and do it quickly.

The Answer Man Pencils In Iman Shumpert For The Hall Of Fame

( and makes random observations from just one preseason game)

loweyecue - "He is a rookie and has a lot to prove."

No, he has absolutely nothing to prove. Yes he is a rookie. Yes, he looks tapered in his Knicks uni. Did he take it to a custom tailor?

loweyecue - "One thing I don't want to see him do is play PG"

If the Iman can advance the ball against token pressure it relieves Carmelo from imitating Anthony Mason as often as point forward. He don't care if he plays center, he has stated a willingness to do whatever it takes and I dig that about him.

loweyecue - "I think that (playing lead guard) would stunt his growth."

Stunt his growth? There is nothing wrong with pushing your limits and failing. No matter what playing lead guard does for Shumpert, stunting his growth is not one of them. The young man will learn and adapt.

loweyecue - "Guy is a natural SG with hardcore defensive skills"

Who you calling "guy", dude? "Natural" shooting guard or no, the mofo is a basketball player. Thank you Donnie Walsh.

loweyecue - "we need to stop pretending we don't need a starting PG."

Who is pretending? We need a starting point guard.

loweyecue - "We need to acknowledge that is our biggest gap and fill it by getting BD if possible."

See above. The rumor is that Cali homeys Baron Davis and Tyson Chandler have talked.

loweyecue - "Landry Fields doesn't know what he is doing out there."

Landry Fields knows what he is doing out there.

loweyecue - "Not everyone can do everything."

The Answer Man can do it all.

LOL, some things never change.

Want more ShumpShump. Got to warn the in-laws where I will be on Christmas -- watching ShumpShump do what he does.

Iman is a Combo guard. There are MANY SG's that lack the talent to play the point at all. Iman is a combo guard and can slide easily between both positions. No need to limit his talent when he clearly can excel being a guard that can create for himself and for others. He's not an Allan Houston type of SG.

Totally agree. He is ideal combo guard, who is playing both ends of the court with equal energy and commitment.

what did you see to make you think he's a combo guard? he can pass, but so can melo. so could spree. he's not a sniper like houston was, but i think he is basically a true shooting guard.

look around the nba - there aren't many shooting guards who fit the prototypical mold like Shumpert does. this is a good thing.

and, if the knicks believed iman was a point guard - why did they sign bibby, bdiddy and give toney reps there in the first pre-season game? everything we've heard from the team is that he's a shooting guard. everything we've seen is that he is a shooting guard. i don't know why some are clinging to the idea that he's a PG. he's a SG. which is fine. it's actually great. name the prototypical SGs in the NBA right now - there aren't many. it's a very good thing to have a young guy like iman who can potentially play well above average at the position for years to come.

what sepperates a PG from a SG? The ability to score, shoot, size, ability to create for others, ability to pass?
What is a combo guard?
What is a scoring PG
Wht is a passing SG?

iverson
larry hughes
gilbert

wade
roy
rose
westbrook
wall

almost all these players were PG's at one point or will be SGs.
it depends on their team.
Brandon Roy had the size advantage over PG's but was asked to play SG because of his ability to score
They would lose their size advantage but sometimes SG's have a tough time guarding a player with that speed and handle.

Iman has the abilities of a PG and he has the ability to score.
He can defend both positions but he has a clear advantage on PGs.
So why would I want to lose that?
He has played PG his entire life...

his shot is the weaker part of his game right now, even though he shows he can shoot it as well.
I think a lot of people here view a position according to their size and not by their skill set.
all of these guys above could play either position.
But to call iverson a SG, telling him to guard Jordan is just not fair.
He came in the league as a PG and had assist, he was asked to play SG because he had the ability to score.

We have our offense generated by Amare and Melo right now.
While he can be a scorer as well, he can LOCKDOWN and DOMINATE many PG's his size.

Now what is

steve kerr
eric gordon
billups
randy foye
bledsoe

jameer nelson
augistine
kemba walker
reddick
tyreke evans

theres a bunch of players out there that you can argue for either way. The questions are, if they are capable of facilitating? Which positions can they guard?

If Nash, decides to just go off and tried to score majority of plays, which i think he could have when he was younger...
does that make him a SG? even if he is able to do what he does as a PG?
He chooses to distribute and create, he could look to be a 20+ scorer easily and go off more much more....

he is being asked to be played SG, which he is capable of playing.
But what makes u think he can't play PG?
He's been playing it all his life and says it himself.

Its evident he will be a starter eventually, my point is to let him play PG, where he is capable of playing?
Where his strengths are on the defensive will be greater are at.

If Phil Jackson was here and you put SG's around him.
I am pretty sure he will start him at PG.

Problem is, Fields isn't a true SG. It isn't about Iman. It's about our team...
I don't want another Brandon Roy injury in Iman.
Brandon Roy was upset why he just lost his starting PG spot after acquiring Miller.
Even after it, he was RARELY used as PG. And he said he lost the advantage he had on PGs...

The kid is a ringer.

He can defend opposing PGs while playing the 2. If he can set up the offense and not hog he ball, then I have no issues with him playing part time PG. We'll see.
