RT @FisolaNYDN: Iman Shumpert could start as early as Friday vs Wizards, Mike D'Antoni announces

Yup, Ian Begley on ESPN confirmed this as well:

New York Knicks rookie Iman Shumpert may have played his way into the starting lineup.

Mike D'Antoni said on Thursday that he may insert Shumpert into the Knicks' starting five as early as Friday night's game at Washington.

"I think you do consider it," D'Antoni said. "Now, we'll see if we do it or not. He's obviously going to play a big part one way or the other and we'll just try to figure out the best way to go."

Shumpert has impressed coaches and veterans with his aggressive play. He is averaging 14.5 points, two assists and 4.5 rebounds in two games. He missed four games with a sprained right MCL but returned on Wednesday night against the Bobcats.

The 2011 first-round pick scored 18 points on 6-of-10 shooting, pulled down five rebounds and handed out three assists in the Knicks' 118-110 loss.

Shumpert would likely start at shooting guard, taking Landry Fields' place in the lineup.

Fields established himself as one of the top rookies in the NBA in the first half of the 2010-2011 season. But he struggled mightily after the Knicks acquired Carmelo Anthony last February.

Through six games this season, Fields' play has been uneven at best.

He's averaging 9.5 points and three rebounds in 30 minutes per game. He has scored seven points or fewer in four of the Knicks ' six games.

New York has lost two straight at home at four of its last five. With Tyson Chandler in tow, they entered the season with lofty expectations but have struggled to play with any consistency on both ends of the floor. The team's mediocre record is one reason why D'Antoni may insert the 21-uear--old Shumpert into the starting lineup, despite a glaring lack of NBA experience.

"If you're 2-4 you consider a lot of things," D'Antoni said. "We're not having to stay pat just because our record is good. We'll consider it and talk about it and see what happens."

Hope this is true, the team and morale in general needs a change up.

Needless to say, I can't stand TD. Shumpert gets the nod from me, if I could decide for the team.

If is good at one thing, he's definitely knows how to run his players into the ground. I just hope he doesn't throw Shump into the fire too much. When he left the floor limping, I was thinking he came back too quick. Now they said he might start on Friday? wow....Hope he's healthy enough to log major minutes.....

Love that SHUMPERT is starting but who backs up TD at PG now? Does this mean a return of slow weak & old Mike Bibby

is going to run Shumpert into the ground, until his wheels fall off.

Shump will move over to the 1 and Fields will come in for TD. Once TD comes back, he will replace Fields.

Until Baron Davis comes back, Shump will be amongst the leaders in minutes...He's going to play both guard positions!

I'm thinking about picking him up on my fantasy team....lol

Shumpert slides to PG and Fields or someone else plays SG? You can start at SG and still play backup PG minutes. You just have to stay on the court when the starting PG comes off.

This is a horsecrap desperation panic move. The kid is all effort and hustle, as any rookie should be. That doesn't make him a starter. Is Antoni really this desperate that he's resorting to energy from a rookie to get them to play as a team? How about after 3 years of immunity he actually tries to coach? Antoni demands less of his team than most college coaches. It was a mistake to hire Antoni from the beginning. It's time to rectify that mistake. Fire Antoni.

You've seen the first six games and thus seen our backcourt, right? We ARE desperate enough to be relying on Shumpert at SG and Baron at PG.

Would you rather that he seem a little desperate to get the club back above .500 before long — 6 out of 66 is already 11% of this shortened season — or rather he take a "What, Me Worry?" approach?

Seems to me is all about "energy" —— I only watch (err, listen to) the Knicks but I'd love to compare how many times says that word in post-games compared to other HCs. It seems to be a bigger part of his philosophy and game plan than for other coaches, but maybe I'm wrong. I worry about Shump's health, but starting rookie SG precident is there with the former "hottest rookie in the game" Big Landry.

I find it's always brilliant logic to talk about a guys "averages" after two games. Maybe the per second average calculator was down the day Begley wrote this?

Fields established his value as a glue/Havlicek guy, not as a proficient scorer, which qualities were hyper appreciated in a 1 star roster the rest of which turned out to be trade fodder. We now have three stars and those glue qualities are not as valuable or appreciated. Fields needs to change his glue. Or sniff some. Or something.

Whose jersey is Spike wearing now, anyway?

smackeddog @ 1/6/2012 11:30 AM
I don't think D'Antoni will start him- his comments just sound like he's acknowledging what people want him to do, but the end of the day he'll stay as a bench player, which I prefer anyways- less pressure on him and more freedom, and some actual scoring off the bench.

No changes to Knicks starting lineup. Shumpert still coming off bench tonight, D'Antoni says.

Ha- I knew it! It's the right decision though.

I'm okay either way with Shumpert as long as he logs in 30 minutes a game. Just sick of the slow starts and lack of urgency and energy from the first unit.

Fields will either play better for us, or sent to the bench early. Same with TD.

This is all coaches tactic to get other players to play better, and sometimes it works.

Watch Fields have a career day today......
