Knicks · It ain't Fields it's the PG (page 1)

Going back to the Melo trade here. Fields was never the same after that, but I don't think that it was the addition of Melo. It was the loss of the uptempo play of Felton. Felton was great at pushing the ball and Fields was having a great rookie year. Then enter the half court set of Billups and Fields just never looked in the flow again.

This year, we are also running a half court set and Fields looks like he's tentative and thinking to much out there. I think he just needs to be in an uptempo fast break O where he doesn't have time to think, only to react.

"alanhahn Alan Hahn
I notice hesitation. He needs to run with an uptempo PG. RT @JaredAWinston: @alanhahn do you notice fields lack of confidence on the floor?"

Let's not forget that coming out of college, Fields was really a PF with skills. He's still learning how to be an effective perimeter player. A quality PG to run with is critical in his development, as would be a veteran wing to learn from.

Perhaps the same goes for Douglas. He came out of college primary as a SG... he needs a veteran SG around him to help out with the PG responsibilities, as well as a veteran PG to mentor him.

Overall, the Knicks have some issues with 3 young guards with decent upside (Shump, Fields, Douglas)... but they're all impeding each other's development to some extent.

Right now Shump seems to be the one with the most upside (rightly so, he's the youngest, was the highest pick, and perhaps the only of the 3 with significant college experience in his pro position!), but it doesn't mean the others don't have the potential to be legit NBA starters.

Bibby and Baron hopefully are helping out behind the scenes.

I bet D'Antoni will eventually land on a rotation that limits the amount of PT our young guards spend on the court together.

good points...good post

I was telling this to my friend too! Fields looked really great because of gallo and felton. They would find him at the right time also Gallo spreads the floor, even though he is not making it,teams wont give him space. Baron Davis really solves all the issues we have. his court vision is just unbelievable. You might think that he will pass the ball to chandler, but if fields cuts strong to the hole, baron will dish it to fields. With that being said I believe that Douglas, Fields, amare and chandler will all benefit from Baron. Douglas because the pressure of running the team and his scoring will not confuse him, he can concentrate on one thing and that is Provide spark of the bench. Fields because of the reasons stated above and Amare and Chandler because of B-diddy's passing ability. I dont know about Melo because B-diddy likes handling the rock so it will be a transition this time for Melo. Who is used to have the ball in his hands.

i think its a combination of all the above.
Felton has the ability to penetrate and earn a step for some one.
Wilson Chandler/Gallo then Fields is playing anywhere from the 2-4, they were a very versatile combination.
Amare is also playing the Center with better spacing and 4 shooters at times with Amare being the 5th.

I don't think its just Felton and while Baron Davis will help, Fields game, our game plan/philosophy isnt the same with Chandler being the Center.
Melo is willing to pass but generally its hard to figure out how is going to try to score.
But there is no comparison that we played very unselfishly pre Melo, with good ball movement at times.
Its mainly Iso's between Melo and Amare, thats our biggest problem.

I think we are better off playing a Boston Style game with the skills of our current layers. Amare needs to take defense 101, with every other guard aside from Iman.
Guards are penetrating too easily, causing Chandler to help and losing rebounding position.
Amare doesn't box out, he tries to jump for the rebound.

I think Chandler with our PRE Melo Knicks, would have been a great team.

Felton/Baron Davis/TD
Iman/Fields/TD
Gallo/Chandler/Fields/Randolph
Amare/Wilson Chandler/Randolph
Chandler/Mosgov/Randolph

its just a balanced team with great depth, building around 2 scorers is not the same as 2 "all stars" on both ends that can both penetrate and play solid D

I am not saying Melo isn't better than Wilson Chandler or Gallo, I am saying the team plays the system better...

Wilson Chandler/Gallo both can penetrate, post up, shoot, and pass. They are very versatile.
Now we rely on too many Iso plays, making it hard to build chemistry and taking many bad shots.

I have been saying this all along. Not sure why it was always assumed to be the addition of Melo. It was the loss of Felton, an uptempo, creative PG, to Billups and now to Douglas. Fields would be fine next to a real PG, but until then this is what we will get.

We're actually still running the same sets we did when we had Moz here. Tyson doesn't really change what we do as much as people think. He's doing the same things we had Ronny n Moz did in this system. Set picks and roll. When your C doesn't post up and isn't really a shooter that's the best way to use him. Harrellson is more like how we used Jared. He can hit a shot once in a while so he spreads the floor as a low % last option and if he doesn't get the shot he heads to the basket to rebound.

And last year when we didn't push the ball and dictate the pace.....we sucked

Davis is an uptempo creative point guard, who will give chandler and amare lob passes! Im not sure though if Amare will be aggressive enough, I think he is trying to save his body for the seasons grind

As a professional you have to go out and compete.

Even on the pick up games at the park, someone always isn't happy. If you are the strongest dude on your squad, guess who they expect inside posting and grabbing boards and defending that ogre on the other team? If none of your guys can handle guess who has to channel their inner Steve Nash?

Its about heart and desire. Td doesn't have to be Nash. But he needs to play smart. He needs to just play his game. Landry too. He want s to blend in. If the knicks wanted that they could have signed posey.

I just wish guys would man up and play.

I'm not sure what your point is. The style of the team was to play at a high tempo, which is always the case with a D'Antoni team. Our Pace was 3rd fastest in the league. However, the team still scored at a high pace even after the trade when we played a lot more half court.

hmmm....I thought my point was that Fields played better with a PG that plays at a higher tempo....like Felton. Did you read my OP?

Well said. It's really a simple game. Don't play outside of yourself. Heart and desire will take a player far.
