Knicks · Best bench in the NBA--Philly (page 1)

It will help them a great deal in the short season.
JrZyHuStLa @ 1/10/2012 9:48 PM
Doug Collins has done an amazing job maximizing this team's potential ever since joining them last year.
gunsnewing @ 1/10/2012 9:52 PM
some phenomenal coaching. never was a fan of his until now. after what he did with a sixer team u can argue isn't even as good as the Knicks pre-Melo trade
crzymdups @ 1/10/2012 9:54 PM
yeah, philly is really deep. louis williams, thaddeus young, vucevic, nocioni and evan turner off the bench. unreal.

that's a big test for the knicks tomorrow. it'll be the third game in three nights for philly, but none of their guys played too much more than 24-30 minutes tonight in a blow out against sacto.

nyshakespeare @ 1/10/2012 10:28 PM
Philly is one of the few teams that remained mostly unchanged from last year.
You have to think that gives them an advantage in a year without training camp
& 2 preseason games. Add to that Collins streamlining the offense to plays that
were the most effective last year & you have a team running on all cylinders.

I agree that they have an advantage on many teams that are still trying to get it together.

Knick just need to worry about themselves. Focus on the defense they've been learning and talk to each other. If they do this they'll win. Philly is a solid team, but I wouldn't go overboard just yet with them. Very few teams are in full synch with chemistry and the ones that are have started off strong.

The Knicks are a little run down right now, but this should be a good test of how their Defense is coming along. One good thing is that the Knicks have already been down in games this year so I don't expect any panic from them.

RonRon @ 1/11/2012 10:21 AM
Last years Denver is a lot better than this years team, it was probably the deepest team I have ever seen in my lifetime.
They are not as deep as last year but they are still pretty good. Philly does have a great 2nd unit, I think Denver is still one of the deeper teams in the league.

A couple more teams that are pretty deep include

Denver
Pacers
Utah
Bucks
Kings
Dallas *although they are missing Tyson Chandler, Barea, Butler, and Stevenson*

The corollary to "best bench" is that the team likely doesn't have a lot of expensive stars. For example, while the 76er have 7 players earning over $4 Million, the Knicks have only their 3 superstars. (Our next two highest paid players are $1.675 million to Renaldo Balkman, and $1.563 million to Shump.)

Unfortunately for the posters that say we need to rebuild our bench, our 3 superstar salaries make that an extremely difficult task. Finding high quality players willing to accept the league's minimum is tough. The Knicks best shot appears to be feeding off the new Amnesty provision. It gives us a chance to find talented players, who have already been paid most of their salaries by the team's dumping them. Find one that you are confident you can motivate long term, and maybe there's a chance for a modestly better bench in the future. The key to that tactic working next year, is that the Knicks must end this season looking like they have a chance to seriously compete for the championship the following year.

They got alot of guys playing and playing well. They don't miss a beat when guys sub out. The guys are holding it down for each other. Fun to watch....I want to see this game with some Knick fans. Should be fun

I would say we are off to a good start. Jerome Jordan definatly is a way away but has nice potential. Worst case is a Steven Hunter type with better scoring skills. Harrelson looks like a really good bench player. I can see Shump being the starting 2 for a long time, especially if Davis sticks here (might need the full MLE to resign him next year)

Knicks will be OK, more than anything we need another good draft.

I think of the next three drafts Knicks only have a first round pick in 2013. That's a problem. Especially since we can't buy first rounders as easily anymore. For instance, we can't buy one this year because we used all of our alloted $3M to include in trades in the Turiaf deal.

I have read posts at this forum stating that the Knicks have only 5 quality players in the team, Indirectly this suggests that our bench players are of poor quality. The reason I wrote the above post to point out that our relatively weak bench is not because the Knicks are doing a bad job choosing players. This is simply a substantial handicap that teams having to pay 2 max contracts and one near max contract must shoulder. That Phily has the best bench doesn't prove they are smarter than everyone else. Having an ability to pay 7 players $4 million or more is a luxury that the Knicks will simply not possess over the next few years.

Actually Philly does essentially have 2 max players in Brand and Igudola. Nevertheless--I dont think Philly has what you would call a power 5 in the starting unit. However in a shortened season where injuries and the bench come into play--Philly seems to be in good shape. I will be very interested tonight as Philly plays the back to back at NY.

rvwink @ 1/11/2012 3:07 PM
Knicks and the 76ers split games last season. (Phily won the first two and the Knicks won the last two.) I believe the Knicks lineup has been upgraded to a much higher degree than the 76ers lineup has improved. One could also say that since Melo has joined the Knicks, they are undefeated against the 76ers.

I am going out on the limb and predicting that the Knicks beat the 76ers not once, but twice in a row. Whats your bet Briggs and anyone else?

only caught second half... Philly has best bench cause they start Tony Battie and Jodie Meeks who would usually come off bench?

They were missing Spencer Hawes who normally starts at center for them. Don't think they were missing anyone else.

To be fair, Thaddeus Young would start for many teams in the league. Louis Williams and Evan Turner might start for a few, too.

This sounds like it will continue to be a problem going into next year's team, where we don't have the benefit of a 1st round draft pick. Does anyone know how players picked up via the amnesty clause are handled in the following year's contract?

mmorman @ 1/12/2012 8:40 AM
I believe the players ocked up via Amnesty become contracted for as long and as much as they've signed for -- so With BD we signed him ti the min. for a year - -next year he'll be a UFA I believe.
gunsnewing @ 1/12/2012 8:50 AM
What about the clause in the new CBA that allows players to restructure their contracts to a certain extent?
