Shumpert stated in his draftxpress interview he see himself as a combo guard.
We need to replenish the depth of the team, its no secret we gave up too much in the deal for Melo.
The problem wasn't any ONE persons fault. There wasn't any ball movement or player movement, except for the initial pick for the PG.
They were daring us to shoot when they had rebounding position the whole time.
We need Tyson Chandler to be paired up with another PF that can do what Amare doesn't understand on the defensive end and be a post presence.
Melo is the only post player, we need another option that can initiate the offense for us, with a PG.
We need Shumpert to be paired with another 1/2 wing defender that is bigger than him to guard the bigger athletic players with him.
Rudy Gay made Iman look like Nate Robinson yesterday.
Baron Davis will be back for the starting PG duties, Iman is our only SG material but we don't have a 2 way player that Dantoni's system needs. A player that can hit and take good 3's while applying pressure on the defensive end. TD is suppose to be this player but he just doesn't get it, he might need a change of scenario with another team before he gets it.
Making him the starting PG just destroyed his confidence and bruised his heart. He isn't as confidence as Iman and is not a high IQ player. He can be a great rotation player but right now, there are about 80 guards that are better than him. I wouldn't be surprised if Fields and TD, with something else would be packaged for another player...

Go back to his college days. He was a ball hog who took a lot of questional shots. Grant you he is a great defender but he is not a pure shooter so I can't see why he is trying to be. We are building this kid up for failer. He needs coaching and he should not be taking more shot than Amare or Melo.
earthmansurfer wrote:Well, he acknowledged it at least. I didn't see the game but I would imagine many of those shots he took came after Melo and Stat were on the bench? The one thing is, outside of this game, he needs to continue to defer on jumpers when Stat and Melo are out there. And even then, continue driving, that brought good things, like points and assists and fouls.
Nah..He had like 14-16 shot attempts by halftime. Dude had his blinders on.
It was one game where the kid tried to force the issue. I agree with MDA that you don't want to discourage him from taking GOOD shots, but you want him to recognize what a GOOD shot is and if there is a BETTER shot that one of his teammates has, where he could set them up for it. This is the dilemma for a young scoring PG. Learning how to judge when he should call his own number.
I'm pretty sure he's a very confident player in his own mind. I think he feels he could make those shots. He probably will be able to knock those down. It's probably something small that he needs to fix in order to be more accurate. still it's about finding a balance and he's been doing a good job except for this one time. Not fair to go too crazy on the kid given the circumstances.
As for this idea that he's not being coached. That's a bit odd to me. One thing that MDA has proven is that MOST of the guards that play for him get better and so I don't see how this is an area where MDA is suddenly not going to take an interest in developing a talented young PG. Is this really the position some want to take? MDA not coaching up a PG? I don't see it. Gotta come up with something better than that.

When he was taking all those shots and also making turnovers. Mike should have then sat him down and just let him think about what he was doing. But no it got worse. he kept on shooting and missing and turning the ball over.

There's something to be said for trying to let a player self correct. I'm sure that you could yank the kid and make him stew in his failure, but then that's only one way of handling the situation. MDA takes a different approach. It's not right or wrong. He went over things in the Video session and talked with him and they made some corrections in practice. You don't always have to sit a kid who is otherwise bustin his butt on D, but just making mistakes on offense.
I don't think MDA had a problem with the aggressiveness as much as his not making smart decisions with the ball. There was a need for Shump to slow it down and get the game under control. He'll grow from this and hopefully be a better player. Now suppose he jumps all over Shump and the kid goes into a shell? We NEED him until Davis can get his game back and who knows when that will be. All we've got is Shump at the point!!! MDA made the call based on that knowledge.
Finally... some people now seeing what I'm saying from Day 1 ! I might take Papabear off my ignore list

I told you that Iman was a chucker. He needs to focus just on defense.
lol I noticed it when he came would come down on a face break and take the first.
