Knicks · What if we didn't trade for Melo BUT still signed T.Chandler (page 1)

Pg: Felton, TD
Sg: Fields, Shumpert
Sf: Gallo, W. Chandler
Pf: Amare, Jefferies
C: T.Chandler, Mozgov

That's a really good team, with cap space at the end of the season.
Also we would have our draft picks & Amnesty Exception

F...ing Dolan!

I don't believe we would have had cap room for Tyson...and then you can also speculate as to whether Tyson still signs here without Melo.

Yep. TC would be going to Golden State, that's what.

I have answered this like in 5 different posts already, some quite recent, and MaTT replies back with the same answer every time...

yes we do, as long as we move Turiaf's contract, its more than enough.
Aside from Amare, no one take a good chunk of our salary.

Wilson Chandler is the RFA, we would probably have to move AR for a 2nd round pick, and be able to sign him do a deal to 7-8m.
If he feels its worth the 1-2m more, i doubt he wouldn't want to play with that team, especially with Tyson Chandler.
We had something special starting, Wilson was one of the ones that admitted he never wanted to leave.

The unknown would be Baron Davis and Shawne Williams but if Wilson didn't sign here long term, taking a Qualifying Offer instead, it would be possible to have
Shawne Williams or AR here.

I don't want to hear that Melo, attracted Tyson here. He wanted to go to the best team possible, that could pay him. We would be a better team with more chemistry and much more similar to Dallas than our current one. He was close to signing with Golden State, so don't tell me New York wasn't a better stage for him to promote his defense, especially with our better defensive players with Felton, Gallo, and Chandler.

I don't think anyone wanted to leave, unfortunately, its part of the business. Chances are it will happen one day. Without Melo, we couldn't have done any worse with the 1st round exit, not blaming him either. We had misfortunes on injuries.

what if five other people have made this exact same thread but phrased it slightly differently? oh wait, i already know the answer to that.

I'm sure we could have cleared cap space with a trade. I like Chandler a lot - he's probably my favorite Knick. That said, it's not like he's a once in a generation player, and I'd be devastated if we didn't get him.

Tyson said the reason he came here was because of the front line of Melo and STAT. If we don't have both, Tyson goes to the Warriors.

Definitely would not have Chandler. Our lineup would still be

C Stat
PF W Chandler
SF Gallo
SG Fields
PG Felton

He would have started with Stat at PF and Moz at center but probably would be back to this lineup. We would be 8-9 or 9-8. Nothing too exciting about this scenario, i think people need to let it go.

I'm sure 90% of the threads posted in the past month could have been condensed to about 3 or 4 threads. That would be boring though.

and what if we didn't sign Chandler, BUT did trade for Melo and instead got DHoward and DWilliams...?

and what if we didn't sign Chandler, BUT Lebron did sign with us instead of Miami?

and what if we didn't trade Bellamy, BUT Willis continued his career as a PF?

and what if she never did get in the truck BUT we traded for Melo anyway?

Komives had to go for the team to go forward!

he said that because the media asks him stupid questions. If Shaq was on the team he would say he was here to play with Shaq too....
We produced the same with or without Melo last year. I actually think we would have done better, but let just call it wash...
He wants to start and get payed, those 2 biggest factors. After that then its about bringing a possible ring in the near future.
Its obvious, with him almost signing with GS, we were playoff contenders last year without Melo.
We had Amare having MVP chants/considereations, he went down after the Melo trade...
You guy believe what you want, I will believe what I want, let me guess, all you guys that say he wouldn't come here without Melo were supportive of the trade?

Or he could have said it because it was true. He sure as hell isn't coming here to play with TD. Chandler saw how they did with just Stat, they couldn't make the playoffs. I don't believe Chandler thought that he alone was going to change their fortunes. As for being supportive of the trade, Chandler coming here neither helps or hurts the argument for him being here. To me thats a separate issue.

Edit: I take back the part about not making the playoffs because they were doing better pre-Melo record wise. I still believe that having two All-Stars instead of one was a deciding factor.

look at your statement, who says anything about TD attracting anyone over.

your are saying

Melo and Balkman >>> production of Gallo, Wilson Chandler, Felton, Amare, MozGoV, AR, 1st round pick, 2 GS pick

what do you want him to say? When asked why did he choose New York? I want to come because they offered me the most money while allowing me to compete for a championship? You seriously believe GS is more attractive than New York? You arguement is weak, TC, Fits right in that squad, while everyone played good defense there, but while lacking a center of his caliber.

If we didn't trade for Melo, he would say I came over to play with Amare, Felton, and the young promising players here. I feel I can help this team go to the next level and it is exciting to play with Amare, this young and talented core, Dantoni, and help provide the defense and leadership to continue to improve.

You can argue that we might not target TC, but we would upgrade our center, with someone from this summer.
Which would still make us a better overall team...

System and teams produce "Stars" of Melo's caliber.
MELO is NOT in the "ALL STAR" status of these players... Jordan, Lebron, Wade, Rose, Durant.
He is above Amare, but we already had 1 player similar.

You discount Amare as a player to attract TC.
Which was why we chose Amare over Lee in the first place.
If the team was just Gallo and Wilson Chandler, I can understand what you are saying.
But that is not the case, last season, we were averaging over 100pts per game while not able to stop out opponents from scoring.
We had an "Star" in Stat, playoff caliber team, plenty of rising talents to go with chemistry, and great ball movement.
TC is a team player, he wants to go to a team that can pay him, compete for a ring, and be the anchor of the defense.

He would have chose New York because of the above, for a chance to prove to the league, himself, and everyone, how his game can elevate a playoff caliber team
to a Championship Caliber team. For decades, we have been missing a legit center, and we finally became a playoff caliber team.

How can you even think TC would pick GS which was not even playoff caliber over New York to illustrate his importance and role amazes me, because he said
"I came here to play with Melo and Amare"

While almost accepting GS deal, his first words when his agent said, would you like to go to NY, he said "I would but, why are we even having this discussion?" because he wanted the $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$SSSSSSSSSSS, so clearly that was the

#1 deciding factor

secondary to go with the chance to compete for a ring, and the chance to start, while illustrating his importance and role on defense.

My bad, I didn't realize I posted here frequently enough to cover the same topic so often. In my defense, I don't usually read your posts due to length, nothing personal. I'll take your word that'd we be one move away from clearing up cap space, I don't much care to crunch the numbers on a hypothetical situation that's already passed its expiration.

Melo and Balkman >>> production of Gallo, Wilson Chandler, Felton, Amare, MozGoV, AR, 1st round pick, 2 GS pick

All we know for sure is what has happened and what players have said. Tyson mentioned Melo as a factor to his decision...I have no reason to think other wise. Have future draft picks ever attracted a big name free agent? Argue about production and effectiveness from the guys we traded all you want, it's irrelevant. Star players attract other talent.

This whole thing is moot. Maybe Tyson would have still come. Maybe Wilson wouldn't have gone to China. Maybe AR would have finally contributed something. Doesn't matter. We have our guys. Time to worry about the present and the future.

That TD reference was a joke Ron, C'mon man. Felton couldn't run the pick and roll and was calling his number too much. Amare broke down at the end of the season and it wasn't clear what his long term prospects were healthwise. AR was a total washout here. I was one of his biggest supporters but it was pretty clear early on that he wasn't getting out of D'Antoni's dog house. As someone put it last season, AR was under it. Mosgov played like a deer stuck in the headlights for most of the season. Gallo is a great prospect but I don't believe he would have made that big a difference. Chandler is getting on in years and has had lingering health issues. I don't believe he wanted to wait while most these guys developed. In the end you have Stat in questionable health and a bunch of young guys who for the most part haven't proved themselves yet. It would make sense for a younger player but i don't think it made sense for Chandler.

Just because Melo isn't on the same level as the players you named doesn't negate the fact that he is one of the best pure scorers in this league, one of the best ever statistically. We can debate all day which guy Tyson wanted to play with or who he would have signed with but its hard to argue that Melo and Stat make a much better case than Stat alone. I think he wanted to help make a "Big Three" in NY.

What is the point of this thread? we cant selectively erase history. You guys know this, right?
