Knicks · I'm amazed at how limited offensively is Tyson Chandler (page 1)

raven @ 1/29/2012 4:45 PM
This is not a melo trade or billups amnesty bashing, but man, would it be too hard for big guys to learn to shoot?

The guy is a very good defensive player for sure and seems to be a great teammate, but I just don't get how you can be so many years playing ball every single day without developping a reliable 12-15 ft jumpshot.

I mean, it's crazy at how he can't either dribble or shoot, and stands like a useless stiff when he gets the ball further than 10 ft from the rim.

I'm not asking for Olajuwon type of post moves, but just for a small jumpshot, even a ugly one like Camby.

Look at shaq's FT, and Howard is in the same boat, this is borderline unprofessional and those guys get paid millions.

I just don't get it.

MSG3 @ 1/29/2012 4:47 PM
As good as he's been, I agree. Dude needs some post moves. But for what he is and has been in this league, we couldn't have asked for better thus far. He's the biggest bright spot on the entire team.
Bonn1997 @ 1/29/2012 5:57 PM
I disagree with this. People don't appreciate the importance of efficiency on offense. Imagine if we had 4 more guys in the rotation who could average 11 points on 4 shots. I'll agree that he does not have a variety of moves but I would not characterize his total impact on offense as limited.

Just ONE low post move would be an epiphany.

"Paging Dr. Abdul-Jabbar..."

Charles Oakley developed a little J towards the end of his career why cant Tyson?
nixluva @ 1/29/2012 7:23 PM
Tyson is fine. We just need a PG that can break down a D and MAKE THE PASS to our Finishers. It's not rocket science. It's real basic. We don't get easy buckets. Remember how Tyson balled when he had CP3 passing him the ball for easy oops? Yeah that's what we lack. I'd love to see Tyson add to his offense, but this is his 1st year here and i'm positive that they would like to work with him and see if they can get his confidence up to take a shot when he's open or develop a simple post move. In the end tho if he never does, he'd still be more effective if we had a passing PG. I'm praying that Lin and Davis can be the guards we need.
knicks1248 @ 1/29/2012 7:34 PM
Im' sorry, but how many center's in this league (currently) have post up moves..

Shaq and barkly argued this on tv the other day, there's no more traditional post up guys(bigs) in the league..

What you should ask yourself, is how did the knicks think TYSON was a good fit for a coach that plays a more Euro style of basket ball..

RonRon @ 1/30/2012 12:19 PM
TC is by far the most consistent Knick on the roster and lives up to his contract, especially compared to Melo's and Amare's contracts.
Problem is he doesn't fit with well with Amare's offensive game or Dantoni's philosophy.
He doesn't like to take anything but high % shots and limit's himself it, even though he can shoot the 12 footer, shown in his FT shot.
He likes to concentrate on defense but we are struggling offensively now especially taking the driving lanes and not being a threat outside the paint.

Amare doesn't have a post game, like TC, but TC's job is to anchor the DEF.
But Amare is suppose to be the offensive player and should be able to focus on the offense with some DEF as TC's wing man.
Problem is Amare started to season without his legs and is primary skill is the DUNK.
Like TC, he tries to get in the paint, without a good handle, he wants to get the high % with points in the paint, but forces action without the room he once had at Center.
Without that room and advantage he has at Center, he doesn't square himself up for the shot, and isn't a good shooter when he has doesn't square up, especially when shooting off the dribble. He doesn't have a stretch 4, that can hold his own at the PF position, while being a good % 3point shooter, with consistent penetration, and shooters to spread the floor, consistently get a good look at 3pointer, while being capable to drive past their own man 1v1 if the shot is half ass defended.
Players like Shawne Williams, Ryan Anderson, Al Harrington, and many others, would compliment Amare much more when he comes back with the 2nd unit.
Our players are trying and are giving effort, especially TC, but they just don't mesh. JJ is not very skilled and is a good help defender but not scoring threat or 1v1 defender, like Amare. It can be seen as an excuse or part of the reasons we are struggling...

he's only efficient because he takes so few shots. scoring-wise, he's as opportunistic as they come in this league. like it or not, our spacing issues are mostly caused by him. he is no threat with or without the ball unless he catches it right under the basket.

a ten foot jumper would be miraculous. he can nail free throws. he should be able to convert on those. hell, even a damn post move. to be so tall and long but so utterly awkward and useless with the ball in the low block is just disgusting.

Please, don't bring the Oakley 15 foot airball flashbacks back...

Key phrase there: end of his career

Yes, he could develop a jumper. His free throws prove it. However. It would be so much more beneficial for him to develop ONE post move. Any move would do. His efficiency would go down a bit, but still, he would be our 4th option, so it should not go down by that much. Why post move over a 10-12 foot shot? Because he is so good at the line. We need to get him a big man coach. We must, its our responsibility to make him into a complete player.

crzymdups @ 2/2/2012 7:00 PM
we didn't sign tyson chandler to create offense. he's having a great season. geeeez.
gunsnewing @ 2/2/2012 7:08 PM
Tell that to Shaq and Dekembe Mutombo. We don't need anything offensively from Tyson. The high efficiency on offense has been a huge bonus. He is actually better offensively than I thought. And he is playing more minutes than ever and he hasn't gotten injured yet. What he brings to the team is invaluable

oh and he is a 78% free throw shooter and gets to the line alot cos he is so big and great on the offensive boards

He's got GREAT hands and agility. If we had a PG that could consistently hit him with the pass, he'd be a monster. He's very effective around the basket. The dunk is a great move

gunsnewing @ 2/2/2012 7:25 PM
yea he's putting up career offensive numbers and he doesnt even have a pg yet. good point
JCrusher @ 2/2/2012 7:28 PM
Tyson was never knows as a offensive powerhouse. his points came from alley hoops. He was just suppose to rebound and play d while our two stars did the offense. Unfortunetly our stars haven't been playing like stars so tyson has done more on offense they i thought he would do
JesseDark @ 2/2/2012 7:30 PM
Didn't Oakley come to NY with a 15ft game? He was reliable 15ft junmp shooter when we traded for him. But to the point, Tyson's game is strictly put backs and dunks, can't imagine him developing a face up game. I wouldn't mind him developing a back to the basket drop set move.

Passing the ball to guys in their spots is a miracle now? Great

EnySpree @ 2/2/2012 9:48 PM
Seriously though.....Tyson loves the game. He is very passionate. He moves well with the ball great coordination. He can really pass it. Why didn't someone teach him some offensive game? He's too old to develop it now, but he should be a 20 and 10 guy himself. He's shot looks great from the line.....its like untapped potential. That's why I can't stand coaches and the politics of basketball....these coaches out there aren't teaching the game in America anymore.
MarburyAnd1Crossover @ 2/3/2012 12:31 AM
Not even though. Tyson will dunk the nuts out of the ball.
