It depends how much of our future we would need to mortgage. Who would we need to give up? Shump - NO. Fields? Maybe ... TD? Uh .. YES!!
But really, what would it take? That is the question. And, lets remember that his defense is weak and we are already weak.

I would give them Baron Davis and Tony Douglas !!!!

Multiple third rounders, cash considerations, I would even consider exchanging first round picks with them, oh wait. . .

Gotta consider shump I think even though he has huge potential. Nash is the exact guy we need. I'd easily hand over fields, Douglas, Lin, Josh, etc. But it's tough with nashs age. We do need role players THIS season because we have to contend immediately.
rp@ 2/5/2012 8:19 PM
You will need Shump against Rondo and DRose...

That's a good point about this squad, it doesn't have a very long shelf life. Stat and Chandler are both 30. If the Knicks are serious about contending over the next couple of seasons they're going to have to consider giving up Shumpert if he's the clincher in a deal. We spent most of the last decade mortgaging the future in pursuit of overpaid and overvalued players. I don't believe this is the same situation because we aren't that far off from contending.
nixluva@ 2/5/2012 11:12 PM
STAT is 29 and won't be 30 til next Nov. Tyson is 29 and will be 30 next Oct. Anthony is 27 and will be 28 in May.
This core is right in the midst of their primes! Thats why this 4 years with this group made sense to me. They all fit age and experience wise. Knicks just need to fill in around them and it won't take long.
martin@ 2/5/2012 11:15 PM
guys, can we get back to reality?
Nash makes $11.6M. There is no realistic way Nash can make it to NY without trading one of Melo, Amare, Chandler. None.

Stat and Tyson aren't going to be playing at this level for 4 years. They're close to being past their primes and I expect injuries to really start taking their toll in a couple of seasons. Chandler missed almost 70 games in 2 seasons before the last one and we all know Stat's history. Four years playing at peak performance seems awfully optimistic.

I guess its free agency or bust then.

You mean like the Celtics? Look the more talent you have the less each player has to do. This team just needs to add some talent as we're discussing. We've got Lin getting in the mix and hopefully he takes some of the pressure off. Jorts will be back. Hopefully Baron and maybe JR. That will make things easier on ATM so they don't have to do everything.

No, I don't mean like the Celtics. Their big 3 could all create their own shot, and they had an all-star PG in Rondo, one of the and deepest benches in the league to get them over the top. You're right their big 3 had help but they also brought more to the table.
Stat and Chandler rely mainly on their explosiveness to get the job done, take that away and this team will decline. I believe that decline will be enough to take the Knicks out of serious contention, especially with teams like the Thunder and the Clips rising to the top.
You want to talk about prime? Those teams will be in it in a couple of seasons, not us. Better to try and win while they're all still relatively healthy and while Stat and Chandler's knees still have some life left in them. I don't see them playing like this in a couple of seasons, not with their knees.

Just trying to be realistic. There's a reason that teams passed up on Stat's big contract and it was because of his knees. I just don't believe they will be the same players after another couple of seasons. I'm not saying they will be done but I don't believe they will be good enough to get us over the hump unless they do what LJ did when his back problems developed and change their respective games by becoming better post players.
I still believe we can contend if they add the right pieces but I do believe in a couple of seasons we will start to see diminishing returns from both of them.

I actually agree completely, though, I worry if we will get "a couple of more seasons" out of Amare. I sure hope that is not the case but you kinda feel with him that he can get hurt for good at any time. More than any other players.
Its intersting that when Amare was playing great last year, all the threads about being thrilled that we got him and not Bosh. I would take that switch in a NY minute!
But, this is it and we can just hope ...
Nalod@ 2/6/2012 8:28 AM
Nash for less than half a season in a trade when he is a free agent is a tough measure for all involved.
Suns can't be too greedy as Nash has been an icon for the team and bought them great success and revenue.
At the same time, if they can get a second round pick they should try.
Why?
First and foremost if they don't plan on bringing him back then they should buy him out to let him get with a contender or the team of his choice (hope its us!). They owe him that.
All good runs come to an end so its likely they are orchestrating his exit as gracefully as possible.
Maybe he plays out the season?
Nash won't request it cuz he looks bad if he does. Suns don't trade him unless thats what he wants. A buy out is graceful with the statement that they want to play youth and Nash gets to move on.

Good idea 'bout buying him out. But: are the suns that kind of organisation? I know the Knicks are not...
