Knicks · I was impressed by Linsanity until... (page 1)

islesfan @ 2/17/2012 5:14 PM
I was informed that statistics mean more than what I actually see when I watch games.

"In this stretch, the Knicks haven't played a team in the top third of D-rating (points per possession), and have played only two teams in the top half (Lakers, 11th; Timberwolves, 13th), neither of which sport particularly impressive PG defense. The Lakers started Derek Fisher at PG while Steve Blake came off the bench fresh off an injury to play backup minutes. The Timberwolves used a combination of Ricky Rubio and JJ Barea-- also not exactly an imposing duo. The other teams that Lin has had success against are the Raptors (18th), Jazz (24th), Wizards (25th) and Nets (dead last, by a lot)."

What am I supposed to believe? This is Linsane. Why are people trying to steal my joy with stats?

airchibundo507 @ 2/17/2012 5:16 PM
we are going to be tested next week: DAL, ATL, MIA.

we NEED Melo if we are going to win these. hopefully JR gives the offense a boost, too.

FoeDiddy @ 2/17/2012 5:24 PM
What Defensive PG should Lin Fear come playoff time? Rondo gambles a lot, Rose is not that great defensively or doesn't take it that serious (Bulls are great defensive team though), Chalmers/Wade don't scare me defensively. If Lin focuses on passing he will eat any of those guards up or at least run the offense effectively.
loweyecue @ 2/17/2012 5:24 PM
What I beleive is that this team was going no where w/o a PG and a revolving door at the head coaching position would not have solved the problem. Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. On the other hand - Linsanity is finding the solution to the problem and implementing it - when you need a PG add a PG.
Bonn1997 @ 2/17/2012 5:25 PM
The starting lineup that went 7-0 (Chandler, Amare/Jeffries, Fields, Walker, and Lin) played very well but is not an elite team. They're probably more like a .550 to .625 team.

That's not fair.

It was recently imparted upon me the importance of "points per possession". I'm just trying to understand what it all means.

The brothers grim!

nyvector16 @ 2/17/2012 5:36 PM
The Linsanity has been way too positive for posters like islefan (Playa redux).
And today's great news that MSG is back on TWC just drove him to start another negative thread.
nixluva @ 2/17/2012 5:40 PM
To be fair you'd need to do a survey of what the records are for all teams against the best defenses in the league. All the best teams also play bad teams and fatten up their stats on those teams. In the end teams end up playing a fairly similar level of talent over the course of a season. Right now we have a favorable schedule and need to take advantage of it.

It's not fair that every time you come back and start posting on a regular basis we need to remind you to stop being a jackass. But by all means keep testing my patience.

We were on our way to improving things before the 7 game winning streak.
We played very well against the Heat, Celtics, & Lakers on their respective home courts.

I agree with Isles here, all he is saying is he is back to earth after all the celebration and taking things to perspective. It is a valid argument not a slam on anyone here on the forum.

rp @ 2/17/2012 5:47 PM
In response to your forum topic not the hall monitors arguments...I counter with the blog article from the NY Times by Keith Schlosser about how Lin makes his teammates better.

Is it fair to ask how I'm being a jackass?

Someone starts a thread suggesting that D'Antoni should be extended. I start one asking if people are comfortable with Antoni being able to win a championship in determining whether or not he be extended.

Someone starts a thread suggesting that points per possession shows that the Knicks are a top 5 defensive team. I contest that and start this thread to show that stats don't mean everything because despite the defensive rankings of the teams the Knicks played against, what the Knicks have done over the last 7 games is impressive regardless of what the stats say.

This was wrong?

I'm not being rude, offensive or personal. I'm just making an argument. Not unlike what most people do here. Are my arguments any more offensive to you than a rah rah cheerleader like nixluva despite the fact that I post a lot less than he does? Do you challenge him by saying that he's testing your patience or call him a troll?

Don't worry, I don't expect an answer. I just expect that I won't be posting here much longer.

maybe the point could have been made with a softer tone, but I think it is a legitimate one. It's a little nuts to dismiss the efficiency stats when it discounts Lin's performance while also embracing the same stats to claim the Knicks are among the best defensive teams in the league

Anyway, I am not impressed with Hollinger and his disciples

Slurp.

nyk4ever @ 2/17/2012 6:12 PM
isles, i tend to agree with supreme. i never once have a problem with your points, whether i agree or disagree i will always shoot the shit with you. i think what supreme says - the way you "type things" god that sounds stupid, much of the time comes across pretty damn negative. i could care less, your point of view is your point of view. but that's just the way it comes across.
nyk4ever @ 2/17/2012 6:13 PM
look at anubis for example - most people here don't take anything he says seriously because he's constantly sounding like a jackass.

orangeblobman, I really hope one day you forgive yourself and allow yourself to come out of the closet. There's nothing wrong with you (well, for being gay anyway)
