Knicks · Resigning our players (page 1)

i seen a lot of posts about "how do we resign Novak/Lin/Jr Smith... we have no cap space"

I'm confused... Arent you allowed to go over the cap to resign your own players???? Bird rights??? Whats the problem??

AnubisADL @ 2/19/2012 6:19 PM
We dont own their bird rights.

Noavak is minimum salary player. JR Smith can get more than MLE I assume and is likely a rental.

Knicks will probably use the MLE to match offer for Lin.

how do we not have their bird rights? Lin is going to get offers way over the mid level

lin is fine nobody can offer him more than the midlevel which we can match

We need to find a way to keep JR by freeing some space, making a trade and being creative, etc.

Hopefully Novak doesn't pull a Williams on us.

Regardless, these movements happen and we just got to go on. Many teams that are deep lose good players.

We should trade Douglas for a second round pick. I know we can resign Lin and Fields. Not sure what the rules are on Smith and Novak. We should be able to resign Novak but Smith might command an above MLE salary.

Smith is sign for 2 years the second year a player option.

That is a 2.5 million player option, designed more for insurance should he get hurt this year than anything he would accept next year. There is a chance he accepts it, but he probably goes to where the money is highest.

I know but Smith is likely to opt out. What are the rules on resigning him then? Do we have his bird rights?
