I'd like to get Lin, Smith, Novak, Melo, and Chandler on the court together. I think at PF Melo could really capitalize on his strengths. He could get a lot of open jump-shots and drive to the basket at will. I bet he'd play better defense than Amare does. This wouldn't always work - he can't guard someone tall like Pau but I think it would work against most PFs.
He's got the size and the post moves.
they have already done this against AtL and did it against Miami with Jeffries at the 5.

I don't mean for 3 or 4 min. I mean on a regular basis. And also with the specific requirement that he has to fight to get open shots, attack the basket, and stop taking contested jump-shots. I also don't think they had Novak and JR on the court with him - that would really spread out the offense.

Of course he is. He is a superhero to your mind.
He can and should play PF in this system, then defense is based on the matchup. This lineup of Lin, Smith, Melo, Novak, and Chandler is the best in terms of balance. 2 lights out shooters surrounding the offense of Lin, Melo, and Chandler is great.
As banged up as Carmelo has been, hopefully he only plays 7 minutes on Sunday.
When you look at this team compared to the Suns from a few years back, they are very similar, but have the upside to be better based on defensive potential. When Suns were the best they started Stoudemire, Marion, Richardson, Bell or Johnson, and Nash.
We would have Chandler in place of Stoudemire, clearly a better defender, and also solid in the pick and roll offense. Chandler is the ideal center for us because he fits the offense as a center, and has the defensive presence to lead a championship team. Melo is clearly better than Marion, and has good defensive potential. Novak would be a bigtime shooter that Bell and Richardson were. High volume, high percent shooting. Smith would be similar to Johnson with his ability to shoot from the outside and create offense. Lin would obviously be in same role as Nash.
Getting the proper depth would be key, but i can see this being the makeup of a great team in this type of system.

Melo is better than what Marion can do 1v1 or 1v3. But Marion's all round game, especially basketball iq, SHARING THE BALL, defense, rebounding, fighting for position is like comparing Mike James to Cp3.
i have been pushing to acquire all player that compliments TC better.
While Melo would be undersized at PF, this lineup would allow him to post up, with the shooters and spacing to spread him out.
But Melo can accept this role and taking the banging role on both ends to help create better shots for the team...

I don't believe it is that large of a gap. Melo has the potential to be as good as Marion in most or all areas.

One of your best posts ever DoubleRon.
If his role means winning, Melo will do whatever it requires. He is one of the few Knicks gifted enough to dominate on offense. Watching his off the ball defense in Miami was a thing of beauty. He worked his ass off. Bosh killed us. Not Lebron. Or did anyone notice?
Shift du Cleveland
Lin, stay thirsty my friend
JR Smith, nice harircut, now go get me some more steals
Novak, Discount Novacheck baby
Carmelo, doing what it takes and taking fours to te rack is what he does
Chandler, The Captain rocks the house with the young ladies... and rebounds with passion
Novak is a PF, why do people keep saying he's a SF. Novak and Melo and Lin and Tyson have been on the floor a fair amount together.
I think I'd want to see:
Lin
Shump
Melo
Novak
Chandler
Shump and Lin together have been really really good. Shump picks up the tough cover in the backcourt and creates transition opportunities for Lin.
I think Shump being in the Miami game changes it completely. and I think Shump would've held Deron Williams to way fewer open looks

not enough with JR Smith, they have done it before though and those guys.
He is talking about using this lineup ,consistently, when match ups permit.

gentlemen prefer shump.

Lin with Shump is pretty nasty defensively. I know Novak is bigger and usually does a decent job considering his mismatch.
But I would like to see linup of JR Smith in and Novak out, so...
Lin
Shump
JR
Melo
TC
if you want to talk about penetration, creating easier shots, and spreading the floor.
this would be a pretty sick lineup and they are all good athletes.
Even though we are going small, with TC in the middle, as I think this would be sick for stretches of the game.

he is really a forward. He honestly isn't good enough to be starting on most teams because of his defense.
I agree he probably plays better on defense on PF if there is a legit center to help him, luckily we have one.
He is probably best off the bench ranging on minutes, depending on match ups.
At SF, he will not get burned majority of the times, or can not contend a shot, especially a 3pointer.
At PF, he can at least stay in front of his man, take the pounding, and wait for help.

Heard MDA comment on the allstar game, its a glorified scrimage/practice. It will do more good than bad. He was actually more worried about them doing nothing/partying over the break.

Novak is a PF defensively and a SF on offense. Melo should be just the opposite in this system. They fit very well together, especially alongside a defensive presence like Chandler. I agree that this team with either Shump or Smith at SG (because they are our natural SGs) offers the most balanced lineup. Fields can fit as well, but i really want more shooting in the lineup.
Just the fact we're talking about a power forward just shows how much a liability A'mare has been this year. He was a beat last year. All of a sudden the dude is Hakim warrick
