He has limited usefulness to NBA teams because he is very old.

He was good for the Lakers because of his roots there, playing a role that he has made butter in for many years.

I think he returns to the Lakers and retire there. He can just go hang out with his family and relax and have fun for the rest of this season.

Yup, it is more of a "Let's just get you out of the way so we can bring in Ramon Sessions and free up cap space, and you can come back next season and retire." kind of move.
