Knicks · NOVAK (page 1)

I love Novak. Even bought a Novak T-Shirt. But it is clear now why he never got the minutes he's getting now. He doesn't move without the ball. Knicks at times try to force feed him the ball and now that the league knows what an outstanding shooter he is there's always someone draped all over him. He does have the nice pump fake. Other than that the only way he gets open is if a play breaks down or if he leaks out of a screen, which is not working anymore.

Woody should try and work on some plays to get him the ball. He's not getting nearly enough shot attempts and he's starting to force some.

earthmansurfer @ 3/27/2012 10:02 AM
Well, now that Stat is out for a week or two (probably) I think we do need to create plays for Novak. He has shown and can fake, dribble and then shoot quit well. He isn't fast enough, it appears, to create his own shot. But, he is tall so perhaps try some switches or the like.

I think Woody will make some adjustments for Novak. Let's hope.

When Stat is back as well as Lin and the rest of the bunch, Novak just standing in a corner or for a 3 pter is enough as he spaces the floor, but now we need more from him.

SupremeCommander @ 3/27/2012 10:03 AM
he is what he is.. it takes a special type of player to fight through screens for 30 minutes and shoot the way Novak has. Ray Allen and Reggie Miller as well as guys like Rip Hamiliton and Allan Houston are rare

Maybe Lin is just better at getting him the ball than is Davis?

I think it's the same thing as Lin's decline from "Linsanity". Teams are scouting and know about Novak already, so they're running him off the 3 pt line. I mean he's 2nd in the league in 3pt %, so this is expected from opposing teams.

Lin is definately better at getting Novak the ball. Lin's penetration forces the opposing teams to double on Lin and leaves Novak open. Baron just was not breaking the defense down enough to warant doubling Baron. Lin, Novak, Tyson and Landry all compliment each other.

If you look at the Sixers and Bucks games, both Collins and Skiles instructed their players to not leave Novak, so you see him standing around alot on the perimeter being face guarded. It has nothing to do with Lin's magical penetration and chemistry abilities.

HugeKnick4 @ 3/27/2012 11:19 AM
Without repeated dribble penetration and guys coming off Novak to help, there will always be guys draped on him. All I know is that when Lin gets into the lane, usually more good than bad can happen. On the positive side, he can make a crazy layup, he can throw lob pass, he can use his floater, he can miss but the Knicks have more opportunity for an offensive rebound, or he can kick it out for an open shot when help defenders come. Negative side, he can miss or turn the ball over. IMHO, repeated penetration into the lane by Lin or Baron is the only way the Knicks can open up their offense. Now Baron and Lin are no D Rose, but the Knicks need to feed off of penetration..much like the Bulls, since the Knicks don't have any really good one on one players with Melo obviously not at 100%. As this breakdown occurs over and over during the course of the game shooters (see Novak) will become more open.

I think EVERYONE (including the announcers) knows not to leave Novak (one time one of the analysts said that you guard him wherever he is, even the locker room). That is a given for all the games.

Lin is better at getting Novak the ball. If you have the game from last night on DVR, keep your eye just on Novak during our offense. He is open at times for brief periods, but Baron and others didn't get him the ball -- it needs to be done as a play you look for and create -- not passively get him the ball when he's wide open -- that'll rarely happen.

Lin hasn't been allowed to "run" the offense, and doesn't take it to the hole as much as he did before MDA walked.

Didn't Lin score 16 points in the 4th quarter of that Philly game coached by Mike Woodson?

The whole "Mike Woodson Buries Lin" thing is so two weeks ago.

Philly has lanky athletes swarming the passing the lanes. Novak might as well be a statue against them.

Yes...many of which came when he was hitting free throws when Philly got into foul trouble. Look, if you cannot admit that Lin is not as aggressive as he was before Melo came back and subsequently after Woodson became coach you are deciding to be blind. I should have really said that Lin has not been as aggressive since Melo came back. My statement was too strong, I didn't mean to point fingers, it is my observation. Coaches, players on the floor and Lin himself all play a role in how aggressive Lin plays. It is just my opinion that an attacking offense for the Knicks will better serve them over the course of a game.

but..shooting all those free throws means he was aggressive..

One bad game does not equate a trend. You are welcome to try again

Novak is a spot up shooter. He's there to space out so others can drive and kick and operate freely. You could draw up a play or 2 for him but he'll never be a primary option. That's taking him out of his element. He's a fine role player. Forces the d to play honest. I'm fine with that. But he's also not a guy you build around. I like him but if we lost him so be it. He has his flaws and there's a reason we picked him up for nothing. He's replaceable.

I don't know about not running the offense but I do know that Lin and Novak are almost never on the floor at the same time over the last few games. I don't know if that's by design or accident but Baron doesnt look for Novak unless the clock has run out and only JR smith seems to be trying to get him the ball. The other thing missing are the screens JJ sets for Novak.

Try, Try Again...

Assists broken down by player to Novak during current 7-1 Woodson stretch(Both 2s and 3s made):

Iman Shumpert - 7 assists
Baron Davis - 6 assists
Jeremy Lin - 3 assists
JR Smith - 3 assists
Carmelo Anthony - 1 assist
Jared Jeffries - 1 assist
Landry Fields - 1 assist
Mike Bibby - 1 assist

Points scored by Novak during 8 games:

Portland - 20 pts
Indiana 1 - 12 pts
Indiana 2 - 6 pts
Toronto 1 - 6 pts
Philadelphia - 2 pts
Toronto 2 - 15 pts
Detroit - 8 pts
Milwaukee - 7 pts

So what we can take from these numbers are that:

A)Novak plays the majority of his minutes with the 2nd unit and occasionally with 1st
B)Shumpert finds Novak the best, followed by Baron
C)The point totals tell the story. Indiana clamped down on him the 2nd game after seeing him the 1st which backs my orignal scouting claim. Toronto and Philly scouts no doubt saw the Portland game, if not, then the Sportscenter highlights when he and JR traded 3s the whole game. The 2nd Toronto game was a fluke, because they were getting blown out and playing catch up the whole game.
D)Novak is a situational role player (a Damn good one) and should be counted on for only 2 or 3 buckets a game.
