small sample size... that's probably what joe dumars said to defend his picking darko over melo in the draft. "he only played one year at college. sure, he won it all, but lets see him do that five more times before i use the second pick on him."

melo has been an elite player for years. the idea that anyone needs to defend melo from posts like 'small sample size'... melo has averaged 29ppg for an entire season before.

to quote seinfeld: he's real and he's fabulous.

I guess some people need to see and touch the hole in the side before they think it's real.

Are you better playing PF if you are defended by 3s? Are you a power forward if you defend the other teams 3?

small sample! and he sucks!

just kidding.

people have given me crap for saying this before - but melo is clearly the best player to wear a knicks uniform since patrick ewing. there's just not much argument.

It is a small sample but even before this year he was a better PF than SF. I think he'll keep playing like a star if not superstar at the PF position but think he'll return to his career numbers if they move him down to SF.

I think if they move Chandler to PF and let Melo play the 5, it will make up for losing Moz.

I think that STAT coming back for the playoffs rather than during the finla couple of weeks might be a blessing in disguise. Maybe that was Woody will have an excuse to bring him off of the bench. I'm a big STAT fan and still think they can do it on the floor together, but if we want to make a serious run (assuming we even get in) I think we have to go with what's working. Same thing with Lin. He has to start but he has to get Melo the ball and pick his spots when the timing is right.

I'm a big STAT fan too, but we need Lin back more than we do Amar'e. I'm not that excited about Amar'e returning early, because the last few times he came back from injuries/absense it's taken him a few weeks to get his game back- I'm not sure how much help a hobbled or rusty Amar'e is going to be.

When Amar'e is on the court, our defense worsens, but when he's playing well, he makes up for it with his offense. I know his defense has improved under Woody, I'm just worried that if he does make it back this season, he won't have his offense, and will just worsen the defense. We really need to think about bringing him off the bench in the playoffs.

We need Lin back though because we have no PG at the moment.

He can beat defenders and finish much better when he is a PF than an SF. At SF, he barely got by defenders and then got blocked by the team's PF or C. When he plays PF, he flies by his defender (leaving him on the perimeter and thus taking the other team's PF out of the picture for shot-blocking). He also can get more space on his jump shot against PFs. In contrast, there's nothing that he does better against SFs.

He seems to always give Lebron, Granger, and Iguodala all they could handle. Not sure what you're talking about.

yellowboy90 @ 4/9/2012 2:00 PM
It might not be better but it he beats SFs and PFs equally as well. The Bulls did what I thought they would do and cross match him just like other good teams will do. Deng is a SF and he beasted on Deng all day. He beats every SF in the league when healthy. To me its not about being better at the SF or PF its about him giving Fields a better advantage because teams will cross match and put their PF on Fields.

We have started to see Fields game pick up and I think they should make it an effort to get him off early and he should back door cut the lights out of PFs.

Melo has played SF his entire career in the NBA and put up allstar numbers. He struggled with injuries and his shooting this year and all of a sudden he's better off at another position? There you go with the small sample sizes again.....

BTW, Deng, was matched-up against Melo the entire time yesterday....

It is a small sample size but it's the only thing that gives me hope about Melo being a legit max contract player. I'm trying.

Carmelo thriving in isolation

The Knicks have relied heavily on Carmelo Anthony with Amare Stoudemire and Jeremy Lin out -- and he's responded.

Anthony's scored 29.9 points on 49 percent shooting over the past seven games (39 percent from beyond the arc) -- a significant increase from his season averages of 21 points per game on 41 percent shooting.

Of course, it's only natural for Anthony's numbers to increase with Lin and Stoudemire out.

But there's another factor at play: Mike Woodson is using Anthony in isolation much more frequently with Stoudemire and Lin on the sideline.

In the past seven games, Anthony's gotten the ball in isolation for an average of 13.1 plays per game, according to ESPN Stats & Information. In the 17 prior to that (10 of which were coached by Mike D'Antoni), Anthony got only 4.2 plays per game in isolation.

In the past seven games, he's scored 13.6 points per game on 46 percent shooting in isolation. In the 17 before that, he was scoring 3.4 points per game on 31 percent shooting. The difference in points per game is expected. But his shooting percentage increase is indicative of Anthony's effectiveness of late.

And a more telling stat is this: in the past seven games, he's averaging 1.03 points per play in isolation. In the previous 17, he was scoring 0.79 per play.

Thanks to ESPN Stats & Information for the statistics.
