Knicks · Who can we rely on to help Melo? (page 1)

mrKnickShot @ 4/11/2012 1:03 AM
Offensively, the knicks have no consistent option(s) to help Melo. He is also seeing many more double teams and passing out nicely just to have our shooters brick open shots.

Shumpert - far from a consistent enough shooter (though improving)
Fields - Ouch!! I've seen more arc from a bb gun
BD - AWFUL in every aspect - I HATE HIM!!
JR - FEAST-FAMINE-ITIS!! And talk about players standing around, when he has the ball and starts doin his thang, aint nobody gonna sniff that rock
TD - HA!
NOVAK - can't create his own shot and if his 3 is not money we are screwed. Also, teams are starting to stay home on him all game.
Chandler - wish he had a 10 foot J - It would make him a true top tier star
Jeffries - tonight he reminded me of how great he has looked in the Boston/playoff series

We have great defenders and Woody has gotten us playing close to the best defense in the league if not the best but we NEED more offense!

And we NEED A POINT GUARD (who is not brain dead (BD/TD)!

The Bulls picked up D-League guards that are clearly better than what we have at PG. Not picking up a PG when Lin went down will cost us dearly.

We can still win games because our defense can make our opponents look awful but to be a contender, we will need much more consistent guard play.

God.
holfresh @ 4/11/2012 1:38 AM
The thing this team is really lacking in our PG play...BD has lost all athletism and TD is lost all together...TD is the wild card, I say we run him out there to see if something clicks...We missed the boat not adding Anthiny Carter...We he to sure up the PG slot next year ..

I don't think we have the cap room but he sure would be a great help at PG.

Saw this on KnickerBlogger's game thread.

Melo: 11/19 FGs – 58%

Non-Melo: 20/54 FGs – 37%

Yup, that’s not gonna get it done. Hero ball is great when Melo is going like this, but against elite teams, he has to be on another planet to overcome such a lack of support, and tonight he was “merely” great.

Addendum:

Melo + Swishy: 17/32 FGs – 53%

Everyone else: 14/41 FGs – 34%

That's crazy bad and the dumb turnovers by Baron and Shump tonight really hurt when you have to do everything to keep the second unit from giving up the game.

I think I have seen enough of TD. Hoped Bibby played last night.

Tyson and no one

First thing we must do to help is to STOP TRYING TO FIND JEFFRIES ON SCREENS AND FAST BREAKS!!!! I love waht he brings but he can't be counted on to finsih off of screens or drives.

It seemed JJ2 and Fields blew several layups yday. Chandler blew a dunk and Shumps lost his grip on a potential dunk too. Novak is 0-8 in his last 2 games shooting. JR is in an offensive funk. BD timely turnovers. Just overall lack of supporting cast helping Melo.

If J. R. played the rest of his career without ever trying to create his own jump-shot, I'd be thrilled. He can shoot spot-up jump-shots and at times drive to the basket, but he's awful when he does a couple of dribbles to create his own jump-shot.

I cringe whenever JR tries to create off the dribble in ISO, especially those step back fadeaways. If it goes in I breathe a sigh of relief!

why doesn't jr drive more. I've seen him do a nice crossover which frees up the lane and he takes a jumper

Boggles the mind. He's athletic enough to dunk in traffic too.

Tyson can score from 2 feet and in. Not nearly enough to alleviate the pressure.

When you don't have a reliable second option is when you need to try getting everyone involved early in games and ride whoevers hot for that game in addition to Melo. If Melo is cold the this offense is dead out of the doors. Our PGs suck and there's nothing woody can do about it.

Unfortunately I missed the full game yesterday didn't even read the game thread.
While STAT/Lin are out JR and Novak are your two biggest threats. We need to try and establish both EARLY in the game. Shrimpers good for a few but the most reliable option is going into the post with TC.

It has to be two out of these four guys every night from now on out for us to stay in this. I don't think we have real game plan to get and keep them involved. The PG situation compounds the problem.

that was the beauty of Linsanity. i think it is often overlooked because so much attention was going to Lin, but during that period -- Novak was born, Fields re-emerged, and even Jeffries was making offensive contributions. but the offense was much different then. although Lin dominated the rock, he moved the ball all over the court. when one player has to dominate the rock, AND be camped out in his "sweet spot," oftentimes, the other players have to stand around flat footed and are less likely to receive the ball in the flow.

and therein lies the rub: getting the balance of both. Right now Knicks have zero PG play to even be able to get to that point.

They tried that early in the 1st and it was ugly. Same for the third and early 4th. The shooters are not taking advantage of their mismatches and open shots. It is what it is though.
