Knicks · Keep same model with Carmelo at PF when Amare comes back---like Zach Randolph in Memphis (page 1)

BRIGGS @ 4/12/2012 7:12 AM
I dont think Amare is any better than Zach--who has taken to the role of first big off the bench. Leaving Carmelo at the 4 gives us a mismatch every night and like others have written--the space on the court when both guys are in there limits both of them. We can use Amare as the 5-4 back up playing 26-28 minutes a night --to keep him fresh and give the second unit a guy who can give us 15 points. We have a good fleet of players--we will need some changes this offseason---but not bad. This is a change that I see as critical to keep the team moving forward. I dont think its a match with Tyson Carmelo and Amare in the SU.
Bonn1997 @ 4/12/2012 7:26 AM
This definitely makes the most sense but it sounds like it's not the plan.
Anji @ 4/12/2012 7:42 AM
2 things.

If the Strong Stoudimere can come back I think he starts and everybody plays well. We send Shumps or Feilds to the bench which helps the bench and we get 15-20 points in the starting line up. Replacing the offense Shumps or Feilds takes to the bench.

Second, you guys are MeloFan boys who only care about him "getting his" and not the team. -TKF

Wow, all this time I thought I was a Melo hater!

If Melo get his shoots 50% and Knicks win its all good.

Good Point Stat coming back will not only help melo out but make the bench stronger

If you are an optimist, then yes.

lol when a superstar is averaging 30 ppg on +50% FG, it is for the betterment of their team.

Even when Amare comes back I want Melo at power forward at least 50% of the time. Melo needs spacing to be effective.

yellowboy90 @ 4/12/2012 11:51 AM
I know it was against a bad Defense but I think we saw the offense in the first qtr we will see when STAT comes back. Instead of Melody and Chandler at the high post they used Fields. Replace Fields with Amar'e and you have the new O. Get State going first then use Melody to take over.
crzymdups @ 4/12/2012 1:25 PM
yeah, i like the idea of STAT coming off the bench. the starting lineup is playing great. the bench is the issue.

i don't think Woodson can bench STAT though. it'd have to be STAT's decision... which I don't see him making.

I still say either way you limit him to 26-28 minutes per night.

arkrud @ 4/12/2012 1:52 PM
The problem with STAT is not offense but his deplorable defense...
Even Melo can defend PFs better that Stat.. not talking about helping out.
Our defensive resurgence is a byproduct of Srimp and JR basically replacing Lin and Stat minutes.
Lin is compensating his weaknesses on defense by smarts and ball-handling.
STAT must bring defense to be effective for us as starter..
Actually this is the whole idea of them bringing Zack from the bench... his defense is as bad as STAT.

Very good point but Stat with his games under Woody actually started played very strong defense and was actually BOXING OUT! I am not saying he was "dogging it" but Woodson seems to demand this.

So, Lets see ...

HARDCOREKNICKSFAN @ 4/12/2012 2:06 PM
IMHO, when STAT first gets back, he may come off the bench for at least a game or two, until be gets re-acclimated. After that, Woodson may re-insert him into the starting lineup to gauge how he fits in. I think Amar'e will be able to positively contribute to the staring lineup without disrupting the flow of that squad. It's one of those situations like MrKniockShot said, we will have to wait and see about.

Either way, this team needs as many hands on deck as possible for the stretch run.

Elite @ 4/12/2012 2:11 PM
I think rotations are more important than who starts. Amare and Melo should never be on the bench together at the same time. When we had Lin healthy, there were plenty of times when Lin, Amare AND Melo were ALL on the bench together.. Just not smart. Always keep someone capable of carrying the team out there at all times and we will be dangerous
Michael6835 @ 4/12/2012 2:19 PM
Amare was doing fine with Melo during Woodson's time. He got hurt right in the middle of it. If he comes back and plays the way he was when he left, we will be find. The trick will be Woodson and how he manages rotation.

Right now, Woody play melo for the full 1st quarter and rests him to start the 2nd. I think he can keep this strategy, but with Stat, perhaps play him for half of the 1st, and start him in the 2nd. etc.
We all know he will finish games, looks at what Boston is doing with KG and managing his minutes.

The thought process being they will have times when they are on the floor together, but they should never be a sequence where they are both on the bench at the same time. This would allow for them to get their touches, etc.

Right now, I think Amare needs to be man enough to know that this offense needs to run through Melo. He needs to make sure that jumper of his is spot on. That will open things up for his penetration game.

If woodson can figure that out, we got a squad.

And that pissed me off immeasurably. Melo was struggling and could never be the defined focal point when he was on the floor with Lin.

Fascinating. But Amare is a career 53% shooter. :) Don't you want him or Chandler (68% this year) taking all the shots? :)

I think we can have a pretty effective "small & quick" lineup with Amare at center and Carmelo at PF. Takes advantage of both Amare & 'Melo's relative quickness vs opposing players at those two positions.

Stat is good enough mid-range to play out on the Wong and let Melo have the post no matter who's playing SM and Who's playing PF. I don't particularly care who starts, but the lineup that finishes games will include Shumpert, Chandler, Stat, Lin and Anhony almost all the time.

Eh, I'm not convinced of that. Stat is no Dirk. I'm sure teams would much rather have Stat shoot 17 foot jump shots than Melo shoot in the paint. Or at least they should! Here are Amare's FG% numbers by location on the court:

At the rim: 69.3%
3-9 feet: 32.0%
10-16 feet: 29.4%
16-23 feet: 35.0%

bernard @ 4/13/2012 10:22 AM
How often have opposing teams matched up their PF against Melo on D? I can't remember more than a handful of possessions when that happened. When we play melo at the 3, it's really only our defensive schemes that are affected. We don't have a back-up 3 who can take advantage of playing against a PF. If we did, I'd be all for keeping Melo at the 3, but since we don't ... not so sure. I do like keeping some firepower for the bench, but I think we can do that with rotations and ensuring 1 of Melo or Stat is on the court at all times.
