What I don't understand is why Woody is not even considering bringing Stat off the bench. And injury is the perfect "excuse" to do so. Not to mention it would be perfect for Stat as he would be going against other bench players and he then could slowly be worked in. We could then work him into the starting 5, just not starting the game. Then if it works (or not) we can go from there. No harm done.
We do need Stat to start to probably have a shot in the playoffs, but I think it's better to work him in there. Ummm, but do we have much time is the thing?

Word. This is the most accurate post on the issue. They should start together. They won't rest together. They need to be able to work in tandem AND separately. Hopefully Melo's new found complete game will inspire Amare to play better defense. If not, Woodson should sit his ass down until he figures out the effort thing.

I think it was conditioning with Antnony. When he dug in on D, his legs wouldn't be there to score....Been saying this since the trade after the allstar break last year. He can play both ends now, and it has also probably been more of a factor in his scoring numbers then his playing PF and the absence of Stat.

yeah, take out fields and bring in amar'e...
but... do you bring in fields off the bench? have him bite into JR or Novak's minutes??? not sure i like that either.
fields doesn't matchup well against NBA 2s or 3s... starting to see why his college team played him at the 4.
Fields doesn't deserve to be in the rotation with his play this year. Sit him 4th next to Jerome Jordan, Bill Walker, Toney Douglas
By screwing with his shot, Fields has seriously diminished his value to this team. He should no longer start as I don't see him getting any better this season. We can re-evaluate next season if he fixes the shooting thing. His arc looks more like "Brick" Mason's than the Fields of last year. It hurts to watch his shots.

Has he even adressed this question?

Yes. And he stated that he will be starting.

what if it matters for Amare? Coming off the bench is an adjustment. The game has a different feel, etc
Could Amare adjust? Surely... but why should he?
Best 5 start and best 5 finish. Thats the way it is. If his minutes are limited and they work him in off the bench fine... but long term? Amare is the 4
gunsnewing wrote:exactly you sit Amare at the 6min mark and put him back in at the 5 for Tyson. He would be facing the opposing teams backup C. Like Fish I might be on a Koolaid kick but I'm looking forward to seeing this teams true potential. Going to also try to smoke the koolaid now
I agree , I would also send Landry to the dog house or just limited minutes at the 3 to give Melo a breather, Fields has done nothing to earn a spot in the starting rotation dude does a dissapearing act on a regular basis
I think you can have two of our big three on the court at the same time but not all thee. Having Amare at PF with Melo at SF poorly utilizes their strengths. They both have nice speed advantages when playing the C and PF positions, respectively, and that is lost when they play PF and SF. You can have Amare and Melo on at the same time but Tyson should be resting so that Amare can play C and Melo PF. This is the obvious conclusion from what's emerged over the past two years; the burden will be on them to prove otherwise.
I thought it was about floor space???? Nobody is buying that Carmelo loses his speed advantage over small forwards.
Amare is up for debate, but I believe when healthy will prove he is better, faster and bigger than most Power forwards.
Melo is offensively showing he is better than pretty much anybody no matter where he is, 1-5.
That's it! Start Stat at C and bring Tyson off the bench!
This is not the Yankees. Stat is not DH'ing.
He's going to start. There are max $100 million reasons why.
Welcome to reality.
You don't bring in a CEO and pay him bazillions to run for coffee when the board meetings start.
This, in case everyone forgot the lockout, is a business.
My guess is that STAT will only play a short stint in the 1st qtr and then come out, then when Melo sits STAT will come back in. I don't see a problem if Woody uses that kind of sub pattern. Melo is in a groove, healthy and STAT never has been a guy that was unwilling to sacrifice shots. He did it when Melo came on board last year. He's not a problem IMO. Woody will have the easy hook since STAT is going to be working his way back with limited minutes.

I never said it was about one and only one thing.

You have to put them in the starting line-up together and see if they can make it work. If not, then you have to split up the pairing in the offseason. If these two can't learn to excel together then we are just another team that can compete with anyone, but won't win the title
Amare may come back against Cavs. That's 5 games left in the season. After coming back from a back injury.
Is this really the time to do this type of evaluation?
If it was mid-season, I would agree. But this should be about trying to get right and do what's best for playoffs?
Yes, it is never too early. This isn't an evaluation. This isn't an experiment. This is a necessity. The goal is to win a title. To win a title against the top teams in the NBA we need these guys working well together. Never too early to get them working together. We are not beating Miami/Chicago four games if Amare isn't performing.

Tyson's too good to come off the bench. Amare isn't. I thought this was about winning, not justifying salaries. Justifying Amare's salary is mission impossible. Organizations that put winning first will put players like Ginobili and Ray Allen on the bench if they believe that's the better fit.

If he comes back and his jumper is falling, we are miles better then we have now with Fields. And, many more rebounds which is a dire need against Chi/Mia.
If we start running plays for him in the high post and/or his shot is not falling we are screwed. We can not have him clogging up what Melo is doing.
There are 48 minutes in an NBA game. Carmelo is going to be playing 35-40 a night in the playoffs. Unless you are playing Amare 8-13 minutes becuase of his back they are going to be playing a significant amount of minutes together, especially down the stretch of games. How is bringing Amare off the bench going to prevent them from playing together?

Amare gets 17 mpg as backup center and 13 as backup PF. That's if he's playing well enough to justify 30 mpg.
Carmelo is not a long-term option at PF, Especially in the playoffs.
JamesKPolk wrote:Carmelo is not a long-term option at PF, Especially in the playoffs.
Yeah, both he and the team look terrible with him at PF, especially against playoff level teams.
