Knicks · The elephant in the room (It's the point guard) (page 1)

GodSaveTheKnicks @ 5/2/2012 3:12 PM
yknow for all this talk about slamming Melo or Amare or whoever on this board, it doesn't get mentioned often enough that we have NO POINT GUARD in a league full of decent to really good to brilliant to once in a generation talent at the position.

Baron Davis can not beat his man off the dribble, stay in front of his man, or finish consistently at the rack. It may not take all this debate and analysis of Melo and Amare beyond : "Hey a real live starting caliber NBA point guard MIGHT help"

No?!

Look at all the other playoff teams other than Miami:

Jeff Teague
Darren Collison
Rajon Rondo
Jrue Holiday
CJ Watson
Jameer Nelson

Chris Paul
Tony Parker
Russel Westbrook
Jason Kidd
Ty Lawson/Andre Miller
Mike Conley
Ramon Sessions
Devin Harris

If you stuck even the lower end of these guys on the Knicks, the games would be MUCH more competitive no?

DurzoBlint @ 5/2/2012 3:18 PM
should say Elephans in the room. Same goes for Landry, Toni Douglas' defense had regressed. An Amare Cardboard Cut-out could guard better than the real thing. Melo defends from time to time but, the only ones worth on any kind of respect on the defensive end are Imam, Chandler and, believe it or not Smith who, while not great is a decent and better defender than I thought he was.

Nobody wants to hear logic! Logic demolishes Agendas.

What's your point? We gave up every trade asset we had to get Melo. It should not be astonishing that now we have a team with Melo, several holes, and no assets to use to address those holes.

But what about my BDiddy hate? What about my loathing of MBibby and all senior citizens? How does this demolish those? It just feeds them!

Hopefully Lin is "good enough" to spread the offense and remain more than servicable.

And StarMelo lets him join in the fun!

Shouldn't peoples ire then be directed at the front office? People are trying to come up with all these complex reasons why we're sucking and it could just be the PG situation.

As for how to address these holes it seems like we'll just have to get lucky as hell in the draft and find a quality PG late:

The Spurs did it with Manu/Tony Parker. Boston did it with Rondo. Look at all those PGs that got drafted after Jordan Hill that we passed on. It gives the Knicks a small window to make the current squad work with a low cost PG until he gets off his rookie contract.

I think after 2 consecutive ass whoopins in the first round Melo and Amare know they need help.

Vmart @ 5/2/2012 3:56 PM
Honestly speaking Tony Douglas could help right now.

Yes, without a doubt.

Maybe the next time Amare has a bad game, we can convince Tony D to dress up as a fire extinguisher. That's the biggest help he could give us.
BasketballJones @ 5/2/2012 4:32 PM
That's just wrong calling Baron Davis an Elephant.
AnubisADL @ 5/2/2012 5:22 PM
We'd need more than a PG unless we had Deron Williams.
Gymkata @ 5/2/2012 6:34 PM
We had a serviceable point guard. We essentially swapped him for the Defensive Player of the Year. Then we had another point guard sensation pop out of nowhere and win a mess of games for us. Then he he hurt his knee. Knicks!

Thats exactly right. I wonder have the knicks thought they were gonna win this year after making that move. With TD? Ha!

CrushAlot @ 5/2/2012 6:56 PM
The Knicks Amnestied their point guard to get the Tyson. They came across Lin and until he got hurt the position seemed to be ok. I would normally be very critical of the Knicks for their lack of creative attempts to fill positions with young guys from the d-l or free agents. However, I think they have done that this year with Lin, Davis, Smith, and Gadz. They do need a younger back up.
AnubisADL @ 5/2/2012 7:05 PM
Knicks had a few holes to fill. Harder to get a serviceable center opposed to a serviceable PG.

Biggest problem now is our PF is soft.

At worse I think Lin can be serviceable. Stoudemire eating 20 million in precious cap while impersonating Shareef Abdur-Rahim is killing us. What does Amare bring to a tema except scoring? Dudes a weak rebounder, defender, ball handler, and passer.

If memory serves me correctly, we don't have a draft pick in either of the two rounds. The team needs to scour the D League and UFA's to see who fits the build. Come to think of it, when do we have another 1st round pick again?

I know that the Knicks first round pick goes to HOuston. Are you sure they don't have a second round pick?

You are right about the second round pick.

Suns receive the Knicks' 2012 second-round pick (top 55 protected) (Amare Stoudemire trade 07-08-10)
