Knicks · Draft offseason move (page 1)

BRIGGS @ 5/10/2012 11:36 AM
I picked out 4 players during the season with a mind that we were picking in the mid 40's. I still like Darius Johnson Odom as our pick--maybe we can swap up a few notches with a little cash to make sure we get him. He brings us what we do not have--hes got a true NBA body with elite type athleticism--hes made more for the NBA than college in some ways especially is we want to space the floor and move the pace a little. He plays bigger than 6-2 he was a really nice player on a team that has been good since he got there and a really good NBA 6th man type in the making.
NYKBocker @ 5/10/2012 11:38 AM
We need to buy 1 or 2 1st round picks this year. The only way to replenish our roster is through the draft since we are capped out.

You have a backup PG in mind?

Anji @ 5/10/2012 11:40 AM
Soooo, is this a 4 part series??

Do we check in next thursday to get the next guy??

No this is the key I would key on. I know its hard to do that in a draft but from position 46--with the possibility of being able to move up some--this would be player 1 on my list. He has 1st round talent.

the knicks used their total cash allotment ($3 million) in trading rony turiaf to the wiz to clear space for chandler. i don't believe we get that cash replenished until july 1 (which is the start to the offseason), so we will not be able to 'buy' any draft picks this year.

BigSm00th @ 5/10/2012 12:03 PM
briggs, do you like kevin jones from west virginia or kris joseph from syracuse? i know you're a huge big east guy so i was wondering if you had any intel on either of them. i think depth at 2/3 is the most glaring need for this team going into next year with shump on the DL for the first few months. i think jones is a 3 at the next level but i'm not sure; did not watch a lot of joseph.

also like darius miller from kentucky a lot. smart player, can hit the 3, athletic.

all of these guys are likely 2nd rounders.

I don't think Kris Joseph falls to the mid 40s.
TymeLessKnicks @ 5/10/2012 12:50 PM
Are we bringing back Donnie for the draft?

I would also welcome Isaiah Thomas back for the draft only. (ducking and hiding)

Truth is those 2 guys have made good calls recently (excluding Hill, not sure what the fuck happened there). I don't trust the Glen fella. Seems more of a business man than a basketball talent evaluator.

yellowboy90 @ 5/10/2012 2:44 PM
I think they need to give John Jenkins a look in the second round. Maybe he is a Mo Williams type or even Jodie Meeks. Maybe never a starter but someone you can come of the bench and play the two and stretch the floor.

Not as sold on Darius Johnson Odom as you. He reminds me a bit of Cutino Mobley at times, but I'm not sur ehe's athletic or crafty enough to finish at the rim on a consistent basis.

Kris Joseph reminds me a little bit of Wilson Chandler. Athletic, but handle and J are inconsistent at this point. Kevin Jones reminds me of Jared Dudley. Smart player, good touch unimpressive athlete for the NBA.

Grunwald and Woody are close. If Woody gets the nod, then he will have a sizeable impact on the draft pick, whatever position.

I had Scott Machado Henry Sims and Jae Crowder. Remember now we are picking 48 not 16 or 22 or even 34.

Id go

#1 Darius Odom SG 6th man type
#2 Henry Sims PF
#3 Jae Crowder SF
#4 Scott Macahdo PG

BigSm00th @ 5/11/2012 2:23 AM
crowder is interesting especially in light of faried's success. what do you know -- guys with nonstop motors can be solid.

he could be what we need on the perimeter to replace fields.

Great! Now I can breathe easy. A business man and a ISO coach.

We need some guys who can score on that 2nd unit--possibly to replace JR Smith and Novak. I think Odom will be able to do that. He can shoot the three with some consistency--hes got a powerful athletic body with good speed made for the NBA game. He lacks some length that you would like but if he had that--we wouldnt be talking 48 but likely 28 or better. Sims is interesting guy for the PF position because hes a legit 6-11 245+ with some pretty impressive basketball skills for a guy who has very limited overall PT in his 4 years. If you watched G Town at all--on first notice--he looks like a good player with a lot of different skill. Hes a great passer hes got some moves around the basket cna put it on the floor a little should be a better rebounder with his length--but physically hes got potential to be a very solid 4 man with progression off the bench in the nBA. Crowder is not really like Faried--hes more diversified but Faried is the better player becasue hes just so good at his particular skills. Crowder is actually more of a perimeter guy with multi skills who does play hard--not as hard as Faried but hard. Hes got a nice shot a strong body and can play inside outside. hes a little shorter than youd like but again--this is 48. Hes an NBA player imho no doubt a guy who will make an NBA team and contribute from the bench at some point soon Id bet hed play well in the MDA up tempo type game--maybe a Denver type etc.. Machado is a back up PG he does not have that go to speed or nBA finishing ability but in terms of pure 1 he's got some very nice skills. He can see the floor hes got a strong base and body his shot has improved he gets the ball to the open man and in a very decent defender at that position. There is no star here--but were looking for a contributor to the team at 48 a guy who can make the team and play a little. Its very very hard to find a star player down here but a solid rotational guy is possible.

I dont think Kevin Jones will be around anywhere near 48. He reminds me a lot of Kurt Thomas--not as athletic as Kurt coming out of school--remember KT was picked like 10-13 or something like that --but KT also lost that athletic ability rather quickly because of his foot but still became a good player. I dont think hes the defender that KT was--but he can certainly rebound shoot it from any angle in the post mid range and deep--has advanced offensive skills is always there for the rebound--hes not a run jump guy and hes not long--or hed be a high lottery pick but he will be an NBA player for sure. He absolutely picked apart Andre Drummond when they played Uconn this year both in physical terms and skills.

yellowboy90 @ 5/11/2012 8:34 AM
I see Crowder as a shorter Paul Misslap.
unstopaball12 @ 5/11/2012 8:40 AM

Briggs, you always have an eye for talent, I am very impressed with Darius Odom.
Would it be fair to say we could use him much like how Dallas used Barea last year?
He looks like a Jennings/Monta Ellis/Barea type of player to me, but wouldn't that make him go much higher than our 2nd round pick?
I wanted Barea really bad during the off season, much more over Crawford, with out 2.5m exemption.
I think he was a big piece that comes in a small package that was very under valued for the Dallas road to the championship.
Quick, strong, tough, has great ability to penetrate and finish which opens up shots for others, making the team better, and he uses Tyson Chandler's picks very well.

Maybe trading our rights to Georgios Printezis or the other 2nd pick player we got, with our 2nd rounder up for him?
What pick is he projected to be picked around?

I still feel we have to explore trading Amare this summer, I feel Joe Johnson would fill some of our holes with his ability to handle the ball, and hit the wide open shot.
Most importantly, our defense instantly gets better without Amare, and Melo will have the room to post up.

Is there a Taj Gibson, type of player, with great length, and good athleticism that would be under the radar?
I would be happy with Henry Sims as well, he looks like he can be like a Al Harford/Hickson type of player to me...

Jae Crowder looks like he can be our SF, that might work with Melo playing PF when the match up allows us to do so.
Great picks and choices in talent we could use....

Odom doesnt have the same dribble drive that those guys(but not bad at all) do but he does have an nba body a great open floor game(speed) a very nice 3 pt shot and if we lose our guns we need players who can shoot. Im not worried he is 6-2 he can get his own shot--hes a good fit here on the 2nd unit. I think he would bring some efficiency to the 2nd unit with some much needed speed.

I like Sims, of he falls to us. Not sold on Odom, Machado or Crowder, though I could see Odom developing into player in a few years. What ar your thought oh Herb Pope and Maalik Wayns. I really like Wayns' game and think he is a first round talent. Pope reminds me a bit of a less athletic Thad Young an I like his versatility.
