Knicks · Making other players beter?! (page 1)

Maybe it's me but how in the heck does a "star" player make other players around him better? Granted I've only been watching basketball for 25 years but I don't ever recall a player becoming an all star due to a "star" player making him better. Please someone help me out because I'm getting sick to my stomach reading in countless threads that our "star" is not really a star becuase he doesn't make other players better.

The only examples I can think of our true point guards. Jason Kidd made Jefferson and K=Mart much better players and in Martin's case got him a huge contract. I am sure there are other points. However, at other positions it generally is a role player that makes it easier for the stars.

PG's can for sure

A forward or a center definitely can make others worse though.
MooK @ 5/12/2012 8:25 PM
They dont literally make them better. They just make the game easier for them. A true superstar will elevate his teammates level of play, not their skills. It's the same with great coaches. If you put players in a position to succeed and play to their strengths then they'll have more confidence and motivation. I think back to Lebron in Cleveland or Chris Paul in NO.
Anji @ 5/12/2012 8:34 PM
You basically named two point guards.

Hakeem Olajuwon

As it relates to the Knicks, Melo could make other players better by doing anything that promotes ball movement, spaces the floor, or breaks down defenses. And of course, dishing the ball.

I thought this year we would see tons of double teams resulting in Melo passing to Amare and Tyson for easy layups and dunks. Also had hoped to see Melo working the pick and roll with Amare.

Maybe next year...

What did Chris Paul do in N.O.?
nixluva @ 5/12/2012 10:16 PM
Olajuwon and Duncan certainly have a positive impact on their teammates. Also it's how a Star player interacts with his teammates. Some guys really talk to their teammates and let them know what they need to do to succeed during a game. Some guys like KG set the tone for their team and get the other guys intensity up to the right level, cuz they know that level, whereas not all players recognize when they are letting off the gas.

It's not always about making others better, often it's making life easier for other players. Lebron is another guy that sets up his teammates and makes things easier for them. Some guys take the pressure off their teammates with how they perform and allow their teammates to only have to play to their strengths. Then you have players that actually hurt their teammates performance and that is where the idea of team killers or coach killers come from. Often they aren't players that lack talent, which would be easy to marginalize, but they are often players that have talent but don't know how to win or play within a team concept and their talent becomes disruptive rather than helpful.

Its you.

StarMelo is not a good passer. As a "ball stopper" he is looking for his first instead of seeing the court. He also does not move well without the ball.

2008 when they lost to the Spurs in seven. It was Chris Paul, Tyson Chandler and some bullsht...

mrKnickShot @ 5/12/2012 10:46 PM
He is a far better passer than KD and he averaged 3.7 assists this year - his average is 3.1.

As JVG stated, "he is an excellent passer"

If he could average 1 more assist per game that would really make him great. I hope to see that next year.

THIS. Think when was the last time a Knicks player influenced his team mates on the floor and they were all playing better?

Will Landry shoot better? Will Tyson get lasik surgery and daily hand massages to get softer hands? No but on the real Melody really could do better and needs to instill confidence in his teammates Ans trust them more.

For one thing Tyson has great hands and it's not his fault that after Lin went down he really didn't get good passes.

If you make good timely passes guys will hit more shots, also you can hit those guys when they slash or cut towards the basket which Melo doesn't do enough of, cuz he wants to take the shot all the time. Melo thinks that those cuts are only to clear out so he can shoot it. once in a while he'll make the pass and you think why doesn't he do that more often, cuz he'd avg 6 assists a game if he did.

Chandler probably has some of the worst hands in the NBA...

No he doesn't. That would be Kwame Brown. Dude will catch it if you throw it up, just don't make DUMB ASS LOW BOUNCE PASSES IN TRAFFIC ALL THE TIME!!! You watched this guy score at will for much of the year off PnR passes and alleyoops and you wanna try and sell that he can't catch the ball???? GTFO!!!

It's well known that Chandler has terrible hands...Last game he fumbled two bounce passes under the rim, he had a chance for a put back slam all alone and couldn't secure the ball..He had another dunk possibility where he lost the ball going up and looked like Bron blocked it...The article in Grantland comparing him to Curry brought up his terrible hands...I don't have to sell anything, I can show u it in print...

yellowboy90 @ 5/13/2012 1:26 AM
Chandler had bad hands with Lin and Bad hands without him. Really I am not sure if it is his hands but hand eye coordination when passes are below his chest. Also if you just watch the games again and count how many fumbles and charges. I know round here only Melo and State have flaws but in the real world other guys do to.
nixluva @ 5/13/2012 1:33 AM
You guys actually think it's easy to catch a ball and dunk it in one motion while flying thru the air the way he does? Dude is 7' tall and too often we pass to him in traffic below his waist. It's not that he has hands of stone, but rather that you're making it harder for him to handle the ball when you pass it to him like that. I don't care what you say the dude doesn't have bad hands. He may not have the "best" ever, but he's not as bad as you're making him out to be.
