Knicks · Source: New York No. 1 on Odom's list (page 1)

What's next for Lamar Odom?

There's no easy answer there.

The Mavs will attempt to trade Odom before June 29. Any team that has Odom on its roster by that date will be responsible for paying him the $2.4 million in guaranteed money he's owed next year.

If Dallas can't get rid of Odom in a trade, it will likely waive him and be responsible for paying Odom his guaranteed money. That's something Dallas would obviously rather avoid.

If the Mavericks are forced to waive Odom, he would become a free agent. In that scenario, the Queens native would likely be looking at a significant pay cut from the $8.2 he was scheduled to make this season.

Would he be interested in coming to New York at a discounted rate?

A source with knowledge of Odom's thinking says yes. The source says the Knicks would be "on the top of his list" if Odom became a free agent.

"Lamar is big on being comfortable," the source said. "And New York is somewhere he can be comfortable."

It makes sense that Odom would be open to a return to New York.

His versatility -- interior scoring and rebounding in particular -- would be of great value in the Knicks' second unit. He proved in Los Angeles that he can thrive off the bench in a supporting role on a team with stars in its starting five. Odom helped the Lakers win two titles in that role.

Of course, there's a risk involved with bringing Odom in -- even at the veteran's minimum or mini mid-level.

Odom had a rocky season in Dallas after being traded by the Lakers. The Mavs kept him on the inactive list for the final 16 games of the regular season in an effort to sever ties while retaining the ability to trade him.

Though Odom's stint in Dallas was heavy on drama, it was light on production. He averaged career lows of 6.6 points and 4.1 rebounds in 20.5 minutes.

The source close to Odom says that he's eager to put the experience past him. He has started offseason workouts already, with eyes on an Olympic roster spot and with the motivation to prove that he's a better player than the one who struggled through last season.

"It definitely won't be the fiasco that it was last year," the Odom source said of the 13-year veteran's approach to 2012-13. "He wants to find a place where he can end his career, and New York is ideal. He's won championships in the past and he wants to win another. And to do it there would be great."

Yay or Nay?

Yay? For a guy who dogged it and played awful this season? Yeah, that's exactly what we need - quitters!
nyk4ever @ 5/23/2012 11:29 PM
Big yay. Odom had a rough year basketball wise and an even worse one personally due to stuff off the court (the taxi he was in killed a 15yo boy and he took it really bad) i don't think he ever really wanted to be in dallas so that didn't help things. if he wants to play in NY i think he'd fit in extremely well here as the first big off the bench. he can play sf/pf/c for us.
Nalod @ 5/23/2012 11:34 PM
He'd bring his skank Kardashian in tow and make a show of it.

funny, the writer assumes there is only one team in NYC. There are two.

Yay or Nay?

I don't care.

AnubisADL @ 5/23/2012 11:38 PM
Howard at Center
Odom at Power Forward

I can dream.......

y2zipper @ 5/23/2012 11:39 PM
I've never been a big fan of Odom's, but he has thrived in a sixth man role in the past. Based on where the Knicks are resources-wise, if he was willing to come in for a discount then of course I'd bite. He's got size, skills and was efficient in this role for the Lakers.

Yeah I agree about the Kardashian, that would be a concern for me.
I think Brooklyn is definitely and option but certainly not one that comes before the Knicks.

RonRon @ 5/23/2012 11:50 PM
At the right price, I would welcome him, with his ability to handle some facilitating role at point/forward.
I feel we should pair Tyson Chandler with another shot blocker with length and athleticism, AK47.
I think an training for the Olympics would be a good thing for him to stay in shape, part of the problem for his bad shape with the lock out.
He is a player that is on a downhill on a physical note and would require much more dedication to practice, admit and realize his changes, and find ways to still be an effective player on a different team, with a different role.

While going for another PF/C like, with younger legs, would probably be more ideal, but they do not possess his guard skills, we probably would only choose either one of em.

Ak47
Odom

Mahimi
Brandon Wright
Hickson

Camby

With Camby being a much better shot blocker and "big man" I am not sure if he would work with Tyson Chandler on the offensive side, but would be a luxury to have defensively.

I would like to sign Ak47, along with one of the above, one of the above with part of the MLE, and with the LLE. While using part the rest of our MLE on players that aren't drafted
and/or players with upside like

Donte Green
Terrence Williams
Flynn

maybe Greg Odon for veterans minimum?

RonRon @ 5/24/2012 12:40 AM
The Odom I would be even more interested in is, Darius Johnson-Odom.

I think he should be a 1st round pick though, sucks we gave up our pick to get rid of Jordan Hill and Jeffries.
Houston waits and flips it to Lakers Hill to Lakers for an additional 1st round pick.
So they still got 2 1st round picks, with a chance to swap 1st round picks (which didn't go through) just to absorb 1year of Jeffries contract for T-Wack's expiring contract.

He is so strong, athletic, quick and explosive, ability to finish, many offensively weapons with a good shot, and with decent defense, I just see him fall much past the early 2nd round for anyone not to consider. I think as draft night approaches, we will hear him dropping to a lottery team, I hope we can somehow trade for a player like him.
He would excel with Tyson Chandler's picks and would be very tough to stay in front of, forcing double teams.

I have been watching some youtube highlights of this kid, since Briggs showed him as his #1 choice, and he looks like a combination of

Monta Ellis
Brandon Jennings
JJ Barea

nixluva @ 5/24/2012 1:23 AM
I say get him. He's better than given credit for. He would add a missing dimension to the team IMO. He's actually what I think the Lakers missed this year. You've gotta have those well rounded and skilled vets that can raise their level of play in a playoff situation and Odom has all kinds of game. When he's fully engaged as I think he'd be here, he can really help a team.
yellowboy90 @ 5/24/2012 1:49 AM
For vet min, that's not a big risk. Also, how explosive could small ball be with Amar'e at the 5, Odom at 4, and Melo at 3.

for the vet minimum, he would rather go play with many other teams, most likely in LA, since he has a house there already.
They can continue with the reality TV show getting a extra cut and his wife could be with her family.
It is really a no brainer, if we aren't even going to dig in to at minimum the LLE.

Truth is, there isn't many more years left if him before he will be a veteran minimum player.
I think he will be seeking at least in the range of 2-3million for 2-3 years in which he feels he can be a contribute and fit in with his all around game.

I think they miss the combination, of length, athleticism, versatility, and energy that Ariza and Odom contributed together.
I know they won one more title with World Peace hitting some crucial shots, but he is slow and strong, the team aged and got even slower, and less athletic.
Size doesn't matter as much, without speed/quickness, and athleticism in todays game.

When Kobe goes Iso and can't produce, he falls in the same category as when Melo does it, its just not good basketball.
It gets players out of rhythm, makes the offense/players stagnant, and leads to fast breaks if you miss.
Melo isn't even in the same class as Kobe, without his foot work, his ability to penetrate of the dribble, and his ability to hit bad shots.
And they have 2 legit 7footers, Bynum and Gasol, with a much better balanced game and better combination defensively than Chandler and Amare.

Depends on price. For MLE, no... there's many more reliable options. at vet min, absolutely.
RonRon @ 5/24/2012 2:16 AM
Like in past years, the players, and agents "USE New York as leverage games begins early"

According to the article, "Any team that has Odom on its roster by that date will be responsible for paying him the $2.4 million in guaranteed money he's owed next year."

Solace @ 5/24/2012 2:21 AM
In other words, my offseason priorities are:

1. Securing Jeremy Lin
2. Acquiring another PG - Preferably Steve Nash or Ray Felton. (Both may be a pipe dream)
3. Resigning Landry Fields - Maybe not a popular choice, but I think Landry is the best SG option we have at the moment. I prefer to him JR Smith at this time, because JR Smith singlehandedly loses games for us with terrible shot selection.
4. Resigning Steve Novak - Probably a longshot
5. A bonus such as Lamar Odom.

But for this to work, most likely means Odom is taking vet min. So, it probably won't happen, but I would love it to.

I don't understand that part of the article myself, because later it says:"If the Mavericks are forced to waive Odom, he would become a free agent. In that scenario, the Queens native would likely be looking at a significant pay cut from the $8.2 he was scheduled to make this season."

So is the contract only 2.4 million or is that the only guaranteed portion?? They why do the Mavs get on the Hook for the full 8.2 million if they cut him???

Are they saying if they cut him before June 29 they owe him 8 million or after???

I would sign Odom to the LLE after all of this is cleared up.

smackeddog @ 5/24/2012 4:32 AM
Of course he's 'interested in signing with the Knicks'- that's how EVERY free agent begins their negotiations with other teams! And we fall for it every time!

I would sign Odom to the LLE after all of this is cleared up.

like Billups on the Knicks last season and Vince Carter when he was on The Suns. The 2.4m is guaranteed, not the whole 8.4m or w/e.
If they waive him, teams that are under the cap I believe, have the ability to take his contract.
Which generally most likely will not happen, why pay the man 8.4m with all these amnesty candidates coming up this year.

I think I would prefer AK47 because of his length and shot blocking ability, especially to pair up with Tyson Chandler.

I have interest in Odom, because of his ability to play point/forward, has a good all round game, and he is a from NY.

Kenyon Martin looks pretty much like the same player on The Nets, with a better shot, still good defender, and has the same athletic ability after all these surgeries and years.
