The N.B.A. and its players union are moving toward a settlement in the so-called Bird rights case that has temporarily clouded the future of the Knicks’ Jeremy Lin, according to two people briefed on the talks.

The most likely outcome is that Lin and three other players — including the Knicks’ Steve Novak — will retain some form of Bird rights, as affirmed last week by an arbitrator, according to one of the people briefed on the talks. But the talks were continuing Thursday, and the details of a settlement remained in flux.

An announcement could be made as soon as Friday, but no later than Saturday night, so that the affected players and their teams will have clarity before the free-agent period opens, at 12:01 a.m. Sunday.

The two people briefed on the talks asked for anonymity because negotiations were ongoing.

Don't know what a settlement means, could be Lin not qualified for full 5m, slightly less 3.5m, or players like Novak not granted early bird rights, but can use that 1 year, by adding another 1year would give him early bird rights, or 2 years for full bird rights. Might not be a bad thing, if Lin is willing to sign for less than the 5m to stay a Knick, giving us more $ to spend on other areas, with our full 5m MLE and build team of contenders....

I doubt the ruling will be overturned at this point so lin and novak will still have their birds rights and i am happy this will be settled before FA. The only thing im not sure os how this effects what we will be able to offer FA's
