Sources: Dwight Howard wants tradeUpdated: June 30, 2012, 10:50 PM ETBy Chris Broussard | ESPN The Magazine
Recommend675 Tweet778 Comments1KEmail Print Dwight Howard met with new Orlando Magic general manager Rob Hennigan on Friday and told him he wants to be traded to the Brooklyn Nets, according to sources with knowledge of the situation.

Howard and Hennigan sat down face to face in Los Angeles, meeting for the first time since Hennigan became Orlando's GM nearly two weeks ago.

Hennigan was noncommital when Howard told him he wants to be traded to Brooklyn, sources said.

Hennigan did not tell Howard whether he would trade him. His intentions were merely to hear the thoughts of the Magic superstar.

Howard picked up the option for the final year of his contract with Orlando on March 15. But since then, he has grown increasingly disgruntled with the organization, even telling people close to him that he feels the Magic blackmailed him into signing the "opt-in" clause.

Howard shared his feelings of being blackmailed by the Magic with the NBA Players Association last week, sources said. He -- either himself or through his representatives -- approached the union wondering if he might have a legal complaint against the club.

The goal of such a complaint would be to eliminate his "opt-in," thereby allowing Howard to become a free agent this summer.

Sources said the union has no plans to pursue any such legal action against the Magic.

Friday was not the first time Howard asked the Magic to trade him. In December, before the lockout-shortened season began, he asked Orlando to deal him to the Nets.

Howard never rescinded his trade offer, even after picking up his option on the day of the trade deadline.

After undergoing surgery on his back in April, Howard asked then-Magic GM Otis Smith to trade him to the Nets, according to sources. Smith said he would seek a trade, but the Magic fired Smith shortly after the season ended.

Magic won't trade DH12 until new management has finished its due diligence. Will not let outside talk influence them before they're ready.

yawn. dwight is a punk. he's making the way lebron handled his free agency look classy.

HEY DWIGHT: you could be an unrestricted free agent right now if you hadn't signed that ETO waiver. and the nets would have cap room to sign you and Deron and gerald wallace.

I heard a rumor that he is saying he was blackmailed into signing his extension and is trying to get out of it. I can't confirm it but my buddy that texted me about it doesn't usually waste my time. If I can confirm I will post a link.

He wants to play with D-Will and I think they could bring another star in. I beleive the Nets only have 13 million plus in committed salaries at this point and most of the guys they are committed to have contracts that expire at the end of this season.

the link above says he was blackmailed... i dunno. there was that whole weird story where the team president drunk dialed dwight. the whole thing has been bizarre. he should've just not signed the eto and left. if orlando actually blackmailed him... i mean... i dunno. they must have something pretty bad on him, then. meaning they covered up something pretty bad? whole thing is weird.

I don't think the players association is going to back him on it. I wonder if after he was outed by SVG if he made a mistake and signed to prove SVG was wrong.

I just read on Twitter the Nets are in talks to trade for Joe Johnson. If they were smart they would of held on 2 that pick and traded it for Harden instead of Wallace. OKC would of thought hard about it. They arent going to keep him

The Nets have messed up a lot since they went from rebuilding and acquiring low cap assets to star chasing. I think it started at the end of Thorns tenure but has been much worse under Billy King. The Gerald Wallace trade was one of the worst trades in recent memory.

Ironically the whole reason he kept backing out of forcing a trade was because he didn't want to look like the bad guy! Instead all this back and forth, getting Stan fired and lying publicly has destroyed his reputation way more. This has been going on over a year, it's pathetic!

If they can hold on to Brooks or Lopez, Deron + Dwight will make them a monster team in the east.

Being the top team in NYC and the eastern conference should be sufficient motivation

Can the Nets get DH, Dwill and JJ? That would be very strong core that will be able to beat Miami. Not sure if these guys would take less money though.

DH has to be healthy and D Will has to return to the PG style he had in Utah for them to have any chance against Miami. In that case, I still think Miami is better but it would be a great matchup.

Yeah they have about 38 million in cap space with 6 roster spots filled. They have some good surrounding pieces as well. Morrow is a nice player, Brook lopez is a great complimentary piece, Brooks is a guy that could develop into a good starter. They get Howard ,keep Dwill , and maybe resign Wallace they are better then the Knicks. The thing about it is they could of had all that and kept the 6th pick as well had Dwight just become a FA WTF

Miami is also heavily dependent on Wase being Healthy. But yes you are right DH has to be healthy and DWill has to play PG. if that happens that trio is much more complimentary of each other than Lebron/Wade and Bosh. Then if they added Ray Allen etc it would be arguing of beauty.

They arent better then the Heat. Had Howard come as a FA they would of had a chance. Right now I dont see how the Nets make this trade. What can they give the Magic Brook Lopez? If they didnt waste the 6th pick on nothing they might of had something but they did.Best offer they can give is Morrow,Brooks,Lopez ,draft picks. Would u trade Howard for that? Had they had the 6th pick/player the deal looks much better. Then they would of had young talent plus great cap flexibility and late draft picks. I still dont understand how Howard was blackmailed the guy sounds like a complete jerk off
