Knicks · Crazy but possibly true: It might actually make sense to match Fields offer (page 1)

So aside from the fact that Dolan will pay more taxes..doesn't it make sense to match Landry considering he won't affect our ability to sign anyone anyway. Just as another warm body? He can be used as a trade chip later to match salaries and in 3 years almost everyone comes off the books anyway..

I asked Larry Coon on twitter. Waiting to see if he responds.

I think. This cap stuff here is complicated.

i thought fields might be worth keeping, too. but i made a poll and the board spoke-eth.

I'm sure he wont always dissapear in the playoffs too. That's something that can always change, despite what certain people think.

Allanfan20 wrote:Don't listen to the board. Fields is going to improve his shot. He shot 39% from 3 just a year ago. He will be fine and needs an offseason with actual NBA people. Hopefully he's actually doing his work. Other than his shot, Fields has been a nice player for us.

If Grunwald does match you and I can bring this thread back. If someone that the Knicks could have signed for the vet min (Maurice Evans) blows up for a contender and Fields regresses even more I'll take my medicine.

It would be like JJ's contract over again, on Fields 3rd year if we tried to move him.
Only reason why we might consider keeping him is to keep Jeremy Lin and his BFF happy?

We have Melo on this team at the same position, with Euro draft rights that play the same position if people really feel those guys could contribute.
Just no room for him to play, especially at that price to keep him.

Iman/JR/White
Melo/Novak/WHite

add the euro players in there somewhere, what will we do with Fields contract in 1-2 years?
Would his contract be a liability or an asset, will depend on how he performs.
Without much playing time, I think we all know what is the likely answer to the question...

JR Smith is most likely going to opt out next year or we going to give him 7m a year or more to keep JR happy if he proves himself, next year?

Just my opinion, don't hold it against me if they match, and he has a great year.
After all, it isn't our $, its Dolan's, and it comes out of the ticket prices/vendors/ and networks/cables/direct tv etc.
With Linsanity back, if he is the real deal, they will get a huge bonus on their stock prices *hedge funds*, advertisements, ticket sales, jersey sales, and etc....

He just won't have much minutes given to him with our team upgraded.
We don't need another bad contract, he fits in with Toronto much better than with us.

We have Fields early bird rights so I think we can sign him even though we're over the cap. Just like we were able to keep Novak.

Get it?

Fields is literally the ONLY player in the NBA the Knicks can sign for more than the vet min because we have his bird rights.

So I don't think Grunwald is choosing between paying $7M to Fields and having $7M to spread out amongst other players Ron.

I think he is choosing between having Fields or a vet min. guy because for the next 3 years the Knicks can't sign anyone anyway.

We have JR's Bird Rights after this season so Fields won't affect that.

I might be wrong but I'm pretty sure the above is all correct. I dunno how it works for teams that are way over the cap and try to trade for someone.

Right now what do you do Ron if JR goes down with a sprained ankle or something?

And more to the point ... he is better by a lot than whoever else we'd fill the roster with.

Still, I can't imagine it happening. Too bad.

bernard wrote:I agree completely with the OP. I don't care about him being "overpaid" if it doesn't affect the cap. I'd rather he have the money than Dolan. He seems like a nice kid. Dolan's a putz and a half.

Well if we're really all in then it makes sense to match the offer. I can't imagine Dolan would be that concerned about finances when he has blown so much money over the years on idiots like the insane Starbury. It makes sense to sign him especially with the lack of healthy SGs on the team at this point and the fact this has zero impact on the cap going forward.

In year 3 he becomes a very attractive 10 million dollar expiring contract. The Knicks are on a "3-year plan" on paper, and the reason i say on paper is because it is highly likely they will retool before the end of the 3 years, given the youth of the team. Our core players are still all in their late 20s and will only be in their early 30s by the end of the 3 years. They will still be able to retool and make another run at it. Fields' contract becomes a great asset to grab a top player from a team that can't afford it due to rebuilding or the crazy taxes. I think an example of the plan would be after year 2, or during the year-3 trade deadline, sending Stoudemire and Fields to a team looking to unload some top talent on large contracts that fit around Melo, Chandler, Lin, and Shumpert. At that point in time we will have a much better idea of how to build around Melo based on the results of the first 2 seasons.

in 3 years, I hope the Knicks dump Amare and grab Love to match up with Chandler/Melo/Shump/Lin

Love would be the absolutely best player to fit with this lineup. I feel like we would have a shot as long as LA teams are out of the question.

Hollis Thompson just got signed by OKC.

Alex Young is on the King's summer league.

Deshawn Stevenson/Gereld Green for vet min

Why overpay for Fields, when there are better options for a cheaper price?
Field's isn't a SG, he is a SF, and if he does not produce greatly, he would a negative contract/liability, and would require 1st round picks/assets to get rid off.

While Hollis Thompson/Alex young, would be assets....
Nobody saw James White coming, it could be a great pick up.
I hope we have a 2nd year player team option on White if he does well.

It reminds me of how we kept flipping contracts like Penny, Jalen Rose, Marbury, Francis, Cuttino Mobly, for one another and losing draft picks to make up for 1 bad move for another...

That is just my opinion, I could be wrong, but I don't think Fields fits in NY since Melo arrived.

Ilyasova could play 2 positions, Ryan Anderson, Durant is a stretch 3/4, even Rudy Gay

That is why I want to add Anthony Tolliver, as a poor man's stretch 4/rebounder.

Amare's lack of moves and inability to fit in with Tyson Chandler/Melo hurts the most.
Don't think Camby would make much of a difference between Chandler to Amare's game.

But with Kidd, it could help his game much more.
Regardless, I see many players in this draft that can do what Amare does but much better, since they are younger, longer, and more athletic.
A lot of them have much more moves to their arsenal, better defender, and higher bball IQ.

RonRon wrote:That was why I wanted Grunweld to look at the players that were not drafted.
2 G/Fs that I have been pushing for that I thought would be better and cheaper than Fields.
For undrafted players these guys can come in contribute and become an asset in our future, with 2 year deals like Jorts/Jordan, and we would have early bird rights to when their contract ends.

Why overpay Fields? Because it's not our money, it has no impact on the cap space for the entire entire 3 years, and it becomes a major trade asset after 2 years. It's sad, but for non-basketball reason it could be the right move. For basketball reason, we do need a SG, and i agree he may not fit with Melo, and he's not even a pure SG, but he fills a need with Shumpert out. I still don't care one way or another because i can see both sides, but my main reason for keeping him would be the options after year 2.

Give Landry a full off season to work on his game. He looked terrific playing along side Lin. I'd be sad to see him go.

Happy 24th Birthday to Landry Fields! Found these pics from the season hahah
