This is what seemed to have happened, yet nobody wants to talk about this point. It seems to me that if Lin really wanted to be here, he would have signed the first contract or signed for 2 years. That 15 mil for the 3rd year (which Steven A Smith says is really 30 mil for the 3rd) could have been made up in endorsements easily for Lin in NYC.

No sane person turns down a guaranteed $15m in the 3rd year just cause they really really want to be in NY, that makes no sense.

My personal opinion is you just don't let a young, immensely popular player like this just walk without any compensation. This kid just fell out of the sky, a gift from the basketball gods. If you match, he can't be traded until Dec. 15. Can't deal him to Houston until next summer. But these will be a market for him regardless. Just my opinion, but letting him walk for nothing is hard for me to understand.

THANK YOU.

This is a disaster. If this is how it goes down my excitement about the team just went down the drain. Can't get excited about an old mediocre team

Don't be fooled man. Knicks are notoriously tight-lipped and you believe that within 12 hours of receiving Lin's paperwork they have both made a decision and started to leak it to SAS?

I don't.

Usually I'd agree, but when Dolan gets in 'it's a matter of principal' mode, he tends to let it leak out quickly.

But is he really going to make the same amount of money off the court in Houston than he would have in NY? That 5mil is nothing in the grand scheme of things.

And then what, DOlan speed-dialed SAS?

Different Sport but Tom Brady has continued to sign lower contracts. Different situation I know but it does and has happen. Ask Ray Allen.

If Lin sucks he will be untradeable because the 3rd year is a cap killer for most of the league. 15 million for a backup?

If Lin sucks worse than Felton than all we lose is money. If Lin doesn't suck then we're losing a good player that can help us win a championship for nothing.

If Felton plays like he has throughout his whole career, his $18 mil contract will be untradeable.

I'll go ask Ray and Bradey, both of whom have already made way over $200m each on their careers if their situation is at all comparable to that of only having maybe $400k in his bank account as of today.

I believe he took less on his first major contract(Brady) and he was Lin before Lin. But like I said it is a different situation. Lin did what was in his right to do. I have no problem with it. I also have no problem if the Knicks don't match. I just not into blaming everyone else and not focus on Lin. HE could have easily negotiated with the Knicks and let them know he wanted more money and that he would like to make it happen by Houston changing their offer sheet. He didn't so it is what it is.

So, how much do you blame knicks management for not matching that deal when by the time Lin's 3rd year rolls around, we will be in salary cap hell when you add Lin's 3rd year to Melo and Stats contract. Not to mention, Shump coming up for an exntention and the need to add youth to the team to replace Camby, Kidd, and others leaving...Our hands will be tied....

But that isn't exactly this situation. If reports are truth ( and at this point I'm starting to doubt everything, but lets play with what's been reported) then Lin got assurance from NY. Went behind their back (assuming its truth that they allowed him to test the market in good will and were in this process all the time) and negotiated a higher amount in year three that would put the whole process in jeopardy.

To us it's a fortune, but when a player can make hundreds of millions in endorsements, it isn't much- he gets much more exposure in NY than in Houston.

Isn't everyone coming off the books after year 3???

So if Lin is a bust then he doesn't get resigned. Stat is gone. Plenty of $ to sign Shump and Melo of he wants to stay/if NY wants him back

It would be but Felton is at 3 years $10 million.
