Just because I'm not the one paying the bill, then YES, Lin's an asset and we barely have any left after all those trades.
Yes - you can't let Lin walk or nothing - he is an asset and at worst can be traded. I see no reason to not sign him. Maybe Houston will overpay in December for him and we can get some draft picks, maybe Lin helps a land Cp3, or maybe Linsanity continues in NY. Who knows. You can't let the 3rd year keep you from matching, it's only a few million more than his original deal.
What do we do with three and half (Shump) ones? Or was this Ray Felton move just to get Kurt Thomas so we can trade him for Gallo?
Is the Felton move official? Has he passed his physical and all the paper work is done? If not, screw that deal and bring back Lin. If it is final, then Felton's a $4 mil/yr reserve. Not a smart move but no big deal in Dolan dollars.
It's only been half an hour but the voting is much more lopsided than I expected.

howard beck tweeted that the he hears deal for felton is 3 years 10.5 mil which is a pretty fair contract.
that's not 4 + mil a year 4 years as someone else was stating.
I honestly don't know. Screamin A Smith made an interesting point. Lin was 85 percent during the playoffs and didn't play so he would be ensured of extracting as much cash out of the organization as possible. Then he goes and signs another deal that makes practically no sense for the Knicks, when there was another offer on the table. It would cost the Knicks well over $30 million to keep Lin as well as a huge luxury tax bill for everyone else on the roster.
I'd like for him to stay. but I'm starting to think Lin wants to move on. you'd have to be an idiot to see that the numbers wouldn't add up

I wish he didn't reneg on the first offer. Lin didn't play against Heat so his stock wouldn't go lower.
80 to 20 voting so far. It seemed about 50/50. The handful opposed to matching and upset with Lin I think are just being very loud.
Knicks should bring Lin back. Lin very much wants to come back. But first Lin has to make some amends to put out the fire he started.
1. Apologize to James Dolan for reneging on the first deal.
2. Apologize to his coach and teammates.
3. Then the team/players should meet to discuss the Lin situation and hopefully agree to harbor no ill feelings. (There are plenty/too many now which will divide the team if not corrected.
4. Start a charity for NY kids immediately and sink a bunch of money into it. I'm thinking like $1 mil/year for the next 2 yrs and $2 mil the 3rd year when he has the bloated contract. This will show that it wasn't just the money and he is happy to give back to the city.
Edit - added 5. Fire his agent and blame the agent for giving him bad advice.

How does he go about apologizing? I doubt he has Dolan's cell phone # and he'd look like an idiot if he apologized through the media, especially if Dolan then still decided not to match.
Call up Knick headquarters. Probably speak to Grunwald first and/or VP Player relations and explain what he'd like to do.
Of course you don't get the media involved at all.

I'm upset with Lin, but at the same time losing him for nothing is ridiculous- even if you want rid of him (which I don't), you at least match the offer and look to trade him for something later. His deal is only a killer for us due to the tax situation. To any other team, he'd be essentially $5mil in year two (under paid) and $15mil in year three (way over paid)- that's an average salary of $10mil. Still too much but for the extra publicity they'd get, not so bad it's untradeable.
Just out of curiosity- if we match the offer, can a team then renegotiate the deal in the near future- i.e. give him a 4th year if he drops the amount in the third year? Would it change cap wise?
Haha Sportsnation is the exact opposite:

SN agrees that we shouldn't match and that they agree with Melo that it is ridiculous.
Glad there's rational fans nationally than our crazed Lin Lovers.
Yes you match.
As the immortal Ari Gold said, you do it "because it's good business. It's good god damn business." You do not let a top asset walk for nothing.
That is what many of us rational fans have been arguing....whether you like Lin or not.

That's not really on topic. They don't argue anywhere that Lin at 25 mil is a worse deal than Mr. .470 or Statbury at $64 mil each.

It shouldn't. We all have our own opinions. Merely reflects what non NY biased people around the country are thinking.

Don't think those were SN polls, but feel free to try again.
Yes. But I am probably trading him by the deadline if not this year next year.

ESPN constantly slams the Knicks. Almost every poster I've ever read on ESPN hates the Knicks. It is the lowest common denominator of fans. Of course they want the Knicks to lose Lin.
If you put a poll up of "Who would you want to start at PG for your team Ray Felton or Jeremy Lin" any sane person who knew anything about basketball would say Jeremy Lin.

The SN poll on that link actually supports your case, 60% Lin to 40% for Felton, for which PG would you rather have the next 3 years.
