Knicks · If Amare actually develops a back to basket game with a couple moves. (page 1)
newyorknewyork@ 8/1/2012 8:13 AM
How good do you think he could be? And what would it mean for this offense?
MSG3@ 8/1/2012 8:47 AM
I think it would be great but you could say that about any SF, PF or C who is missing that fro mtheir game, ie Tyson Chandler. Tyson is in desperate need of any post move(s). What's most important for Amar'e this year is not getting lost on Defense and boxing out on both ends.
Offensively, I'm sure he'll pick up some moves from Hakeem. But what would be invaluable is if he started hitting the J consistently again and stop turning the ball over when he gets down low. Now that he's getting older and losing explosivemess a post game would be great though.
TRU@ 8/1/2012 8:50 AM
The thing is, Tyson would benefit more from that kind of skill development, in this offense.
His size, with a jump hook in today's short ass league would wreak havoc on defenses. Amare can face up and dribble drive (or at least he could, once). Tyson as an option late in the shot clock would lead to a bunch of 116-point nights.
Vmart@ 8/1/2012 8:58 AM
The words back to the basket has back in it, one elbow to Amare's back and he will pretty much forget and give up what Hakeem taught him.
franco12@ 8/1/2012 9:01 AM
I don't think Amar'e needs a post game as much as he needs to develop better footwork and moves within the paint, so when his drive to the hoop is cut off, he has an option besides a charge or bad shot.
Plus, he needs to find his touch on his jumper, and if he does that, extend his range to the 3 point line.

With the sets we're going to run i think a big noght offensively for us is going to be 102 points. But that's ok as long as our Defense is top 5 in the league.
Gymkata@ 8/1/2012 10:11 AM
He needs to hit that elbow jumper.
Forget the lack of explosiveness or the muscle mass he put on: his failure to consistently knock that 15-footer down was the single most debilitating aspect of his game last year.
Nalod@ 8/1/2012 10:38 AM
If he can see the double team and pass out then he'll be even better.
I hope his back can handle that low post. Got to have some serious core strength to go a full season.
AMare has the quickness to really exceed. IN fact, he does have a great inside game but its based on him being quicker. Hakeem can show him the fundamentals to create space. And like I said, perhaps see the weak side help and know when to pass out instead of dropping his shoulder into the defender.
Tyson can get some easy buckets from this.
And no doubt Tyson needs some kind of move(s)he can feel confident about.

someone that gets it and has their eyes open. Last year aside, Amare has been one of the elite frontcourt scorers in the NBA. I posted a list of guys who had scored 20ppg on at least 50% shooting and its only been done 40 times in the last decade and 6 of those 40 were by Amare.
Last year the guy couldnt play basketball in the offseason, so his only option for staying in shape was time in the weightroom. The added bulk and muscle didnt help his game or his back, but it wasnt because the guy wasnt working.
Looking forward to the Amare we saw in year one. Seems people have exceptionally short memory regarding his skill set.

It is incredible how so many forget Amare' was practically a shoe in for MVP for 1/2 a season the year before last.
He has had some stellar play... And on the Knicks many pessimists think it was all due to Raymond Felton. Now we have a much healthier Amare', a much improved and balanced team, and another superstar to take the defense's attention.
Despite what happened this season, I personally think Amare will have a great season.

^^^ this, and you look at this career and anytime he's had an injury in a seaon he comes back better.

STAT isn't going to be banging people like Shaq! That's a different kind of post up game than Hakeem had. It wasn't a brute force post game, but rather a Finesse Post game, with great quickness and precise footwork. That fits more with what STAT is built for. I think people overrate the supposed pounding his back would take from posting up. He doesn't have to get ultra low post, but rather he can catch it and have his body be free of contact when he 1st catches it.
Something like this is an option
You can see that it's not a constant bang, bang, bang style. You can catch and 1/4 turn your body so that your shoulder is in the chest of the defender and you can do a number of things from there.

He didn't come back better this past year after being injured the prior season.

wasnt through lack of work. He came in shape, but didnt play any ball. He got bigger from all the weights but it didnt help his game. Not so much an excuse rather a reality. Seems like he's got everything needed to bounce back. Tons of hoops, special training, etc etc

Actually it's usually the 2nd season after his injury that he has a great year.
Going by the record it makes sense that his game is off in the year he comes back since he isn't able to prepare properly, but in the 2nd year he's able to get his full summer of work in to get back to full strength and put in work on his game as well. I think he's gonna have a big year.

I'd like Amar'e to continue to evolve. Right now, he's the 3rd most important Knick, and I think most of us thought there'd be a chance he'd be fighting to be the most important. I'd still like to see some occasional minutes with Melo at the 4 and Amar'e at the 5, and that works best with Amar'e having a back-to-the-basket game

With the new treatment Amar'e is getting on his back, he should be able to play without pain which I think slowed him down a lot. He looked really stiff before he got his Epidural Back Treatment. After that he looked much better. Adding some more refined post moves would be a great boost to the team. My guess is that he'll be successful in adding post game. His touch is actually VERY good. Last year was the 1st time we saw him lose his touch and I don't believe it's a permanent thing. Very rarely do players lose the ability to shoot.
arkrud@ 8/1/2012 4:56 PM
Not sure what STAT has to do with new Knicks team we will have on the court and with Woodson system... It will be no place for him to be back to the basket. If he will hit 15-ft around 50% he can be a +, otherwise just waste of space and money. We have Tyson, Camby, and even Kurt, who are all much more efficient players in half-court iso that STAT. I except a lot of water distinguishers being kicked and punched
babyKnicks@ 8/1/2012 5:42 PM
He needs to set screens for melo and be ready to catch and finish.
I like how they use kg, but kg is a center.
babyKnicks@ 8/1/2012 5:47 PM
I'd like to see more of the set Woodson ran at Atlanta:

I agree. i feel like I'm in the minority on this board, but I'm willing to give Amar'e the benefit of the doubt. He came off a back injury and had no camp as well as a condensed schedule... not exactly the optimal recipe for coming back from a basketball injury. I hope Amar'e found a good yoga instructor this offseason
