Criteria
The Captain can walk into the office of the head coach anytime and vice versa.
He should have a track record of team achievement, a ring would be nice.
The Captain only needs to give a player a look for him to get the message. He knows the refs by name.
This player plays through pain without any complaint. Even if it means dragging one leg onto the court.
The Captain is not a good quote machine but every word he speaks inside the locker room carries weight with his teammates.
He is not The Captain for show. He is the Captain because he is respected by the other 14 men.
When the Captain calls a team meeting, no one is late.
The Captain don't play that.
This player walks tall, no matter what. His body language exudes confidence at all times. Especially in defeat.
The Captain keeps it real and keeps his head up, on a swivel and out of the clouds.
Piece of cake.
Tyson Chandler.
Assistant Captains - Jason Kidd and Marcus Camby ('Sup Hartford?")
Agreed with Chandler. Could not disagree more with Jason Kidd... captaincy isn't just about production and basketball IQ--it's also about doing the right thing off the court. Forget about him beating his wife, his most recent DUI I think would disqualify him from that role, no?

Production and Basketball IQ are actually low on the list. They were not listed on the original criteria. Basketball IQ is for nerds and assistant coaches. The Captain must be a great follower and leader, simultaneously. Production, (ie. guys who fill the stat sheet), has never defined a Captain, although it helps if The Captain can play a lick. Bill Russell was not always big on stats, but he played big when it mattered most.
Play big when it matters most.
Nah
Carmelo and Amare are the captains its up to them to set the tone they need the extra incentive
Chandler is a leader he doesn't need the title, never has never will
GodNa7ion - what are your top 5 criteria for Captain?
Extra incentive is never a good reason to name someone Captain. If you need a title to give supreme effort, I don't want you around.
I don't care who's named captain, it's up to Carmelo and Stat to lead this team, they get paid the big bucks...
Leadership Notes
ChuckBuck wrote:I don't care who's named captain, it's up to Carmelo and Stat to lead this team, they get paid the big bucks...
ChuckBuck - wrong. It is up to Mike Woodson the lead the team. It is up to Carmelo and Amar'e to become a part of a cohesive whole.
Big bucks have absolutely no bearing on whether the five on the floor cover for each other and learn how to trust defensive assignments. Carmelo and Amar'e are NOT required to lead as much as refine their roles as a part of a team. Once they learn this lesson with their new running buddies, they will be golden. There are 13 players who were not here last season competing for jobs and minutes.
Thirteen.
Amar'e and Carmelo need to make the subtle adjustments on the court to accomodate for players they have limited or no experience with. Thinking that they must always lead is what gets them in trouble. More important, thinking they must lead will make team building more difficult. There is veteran talent on this roster at every position. Amar'e and Carmelo would be wise to pay careful attention and trust what the other men bring to the floor.
Hit the open man.
Amare is the leader in all the knicks players eyes.
None would have came to NY had he not made the first step.
Who, Other Than The Answer Man, Had A Bunch Of Green Army Men?
Q. Nalod - We playing with action figures today?
A. We play with action figures every day.
Q. Nalod - Dilute the title, it really does not matter who is captain.
Then have no captains.
All men are created (and treated as) equal.
In my eyes, Amare is the captain...Chandler has already alluded to the fact that Amare is the reason they are all there...He is the foundation..Very even keeled and importantly he is on the court when it matters...He has shown he will do what it takes to win in sacrificing his offence when Melo arrived...Amare is the one guy everyone can speak to and will listen..Dude is off writhing children books...New guys need not apply..Non-starters need not ally...Kidd is a Net and a Mav...He could never be captain of the Knicks...
Chandler to me is a rah rah guy, not a leader...There is a difference...Chandler can't offer direction to Melo, Amare, Kidd, Camby or any established vet...Chandler just don't have the accolades under his belt for that...He is a great role player and a great locker guy..Not a leader...

I deleted my post before I saw your response. I think this team would be best to let the natural order sort it out.
I agree that chandler should be the Capt. alone. I think Amare was the captain but im not sure he is genuine to sacrifice. Nor is Melo.
These guys HAVE TO THINK them being the best stars they can be is what puts them over the top. They are max players with great gifts so why should they think otherwise?
I think Kidd and Tyson are the natural leaders. One on defense the other the QB on offense. Even if Felton likely gets the starters minutes Kidd can lead off the court.
Melo is a great scorer but "leader" im not sure about. This is not rec league where the best player is the Captain.
Captaincy is over rated, I think. Does it really matter who is called captain? Whoever gets the title, it doesn't really matter- players will be drawn to the players who show leadership. Lets be honest, regardless of who got the official title last season, Tyson was looked up to as the leader of the team. One of the pluses about this years team is we have a lot of veteran leadership- Kidd, Camby, Kurt, Tyson especially- for a change it's one of our teams strengths (and it's been a long, long, long time since we could say that!)

i personally dont want any captains but why the hell would you make amare the captain? I like Amare but Tyson would be a much better choice

Sprinkle in some Rasheed Wallace for comic relief and you have a locker room that includes poise and laughter.
Elder Pablo Prigioni may be new to Manhattan but he is no rookie. He will not turn it over under pressure.
Captain? We don't need no steekin' Captain!

i agree captains are overrated. I mean Carmelo referenced himself as captain last year but why do we need a captain anyway

No they don't, the players all hold Amare in that respect.
Jkidd should be the captain and starter at Pg.
The real reason JKidd is here is to be close to Deron Williams...Look it up...
