Knicks · Not as old as people say (page 1)

IrishKnickFan @ 10/2/2012 11:01 AM
I've read a lot of articles that have made fun of the knicks age. Besides kurt, camby, kidd, and sheed everybody else is under 30. Melo and Felton are 28, amare/tyso are 29. Jr Shump and Brewer are in their mid 20's.

The articles that focus on the Knicks age make for juicier headlines and less work to research the details about players.

We have 13 new men on the roster. 13. Has anyone noted that?

Earl...I think a lot of times having so many new players on a roster works against a team. However, in our case this is a good thing. Most of the new guys brought in are either playmakers, defense first guys or both. The identity of this team is going to be defense with 2 guys that are elite offenseive players with some firepower off the bench in Novak and Smith. The playmakers (Kidd, Felton, Prigioni) will only make life easier for Melo, STAT and Chandler.

When a teams identity is defense it is much easier to gel quicker since defense is all about effort and anticipation. The offensive game plan will be much simpler. And with the talent we have it should maximize offensive output.

I, as many Knicks fans, have gotten a little too excited the last 2 pre seasons which has lead ultimately to dissapointment. This year has to be different. Although I think it was a mistake not to reach out to Phil Jackson, I think Woody is the right fit. Although I think it was foolish to let Lin walk for nothing, I think the current pieces fit just as good, if not better. I honestly believe anything less than top 4 in the East is going to be very dissapointing. I cannot wait for 11/1/12.

WE DIDN't bring on one playmaker.. kidd is no longer a "playmaker", more of a distributor.. felton? is he really a playmaker.... I think the age of this team is a legit concern.....

I think the age is a concern also. We have to expect that some of the guys will be missing chunks of time, but if we can be healthy come April that's all that matters.

But to say Kidd and Felton aren't playmakers is incorrect. If a guy like Rondo is the standard for a playmeker then they are not playmakers. But I think they are better than average passers and have high IQ on the court.

MSG3 - yours is the most concise and intelligent overview of the Knicks this week. You called it - the storyline of November will be how quickly the combinations come together. Imagine, this is the first training camp that Amar'e and Carmelo have had together... and they get to sample beats with Raymond Felton and Tyson Chandler before the season starts.

Marcus Camby and Kurt Thomas provide size and depth to the second shift. They have history together. Camby rebounds everything and is an excellent passer. Kurt shot 47 per cent from the field last year. No one talks about that. Jason Kidd will have no trouble finding Steve Novak for wide open looks, or making a bounce pass in rhythm to JR Smith diving inside.

A healthy Ronnie Brewer will be a bonus in December. No rush. Kid Can Play (Shump) can take it slow, for now. Prigioni is insurance.

Rasheed Wallace shuts down stupid questions from lazy beat writers and makes Mike Woodson smile.

IrishKnickFan @ 10/2/2012 12:29 PM
also nba beat writers fail to mention that both kidd and camby wont be playing as many minutes as they were last year so they will be more effective/fresh

Playmaker/distributor...its all Semantics. I think you know what he meant. As the OP said, the core of the team is under 30. The over 30 crowd are periphery role-platyers. Important role players, but role players nevertheless. I agree, though that we need an influx of youth in the upcoming years.

ChuckBuck @ 10/2/2012 12:36 PM
As long as the older veterans don't have to play extended minutes like what Baron and Bibby had to do, we should be okay. 10-15 effective minutes is the sweet spot.

Any starters missing extended time due to injury could be trouble.

I agree. Don't believe we are getting veterans who still believe that they are 20 years old and wont accept their roles. The knock on Woodson was his record in the playoffs which has been underwhelming.

All the experience on this roster should serve him well, especially with Kidd's experience as a floor general in the playoffs.

I think Camby could move into the starting lineup without a hiccup. Kidd too if he splits the time with Prigioni.

Wait until Melo and Amare are old in a few years and we have no up and coming young players and lottery picks. It will be another 12yrs of futility. I guess if we win a title in the next 3yrs it will be worth it. Problem is they are not getting past Lakers, Miami and OKC

I agree that for a game or two, platooning at PG or PF could work. I just don't want to see Kidd or Camby or Thomas leg explode due to overplaying old bodies out of necessity like Baron's in the playoffs.

I hear ya, I think they could play a bit longer than that, but after a while I agree that you do have to worry about them having something left in the tank for the playoffs.

Miami was supposed to win back to back title by now, but got beat by Dallas in 2011. There's no sure things in sports, luck, chance, health all play a factor.

To go from one playoff apearance in ten plus years to going deep in the playoffs would be a big step up. I just want to see the Knicks represent at this point. Put up a good fight. After 40 years I want to see the Knicks win another championship as much as the next guy, but the truth is not many teams win it all and I would be happy to see this team earn some respect. Beats them being a perpetual punch line.

IrishKnickFan @ 10/2/2012 1:09 PM
This year we are gonna learn a lot of things. After 12 years of misery i really want a very good season and at least to get to the ECF. This is a big year for Melo because he has had a great career but a very bad playoff record so this could be the year where he finally breas through. felton also looks to silence the critics. The same goes for Amare
