Sure Amar'e needs to develop his game, but he's working on it. I don't get where this idea has kicked in that players in their 30s are past it just because their athleticism isn't what it used to be.

I agree, it only becomes a problem IMO when a player acts like he's still in his prime and doesn't try to change his game to better fit his declining athleticism. I don't see Stat as being that kind of player.

agreed. Him working with Hakeem on his post up moves proves that. I mean if he didnt care he wouldnt have bothered. Also i heard it cost him 100000

while he came out of high school and probably never had to learn some basics, he probably should have been trying to do this a bit sooner. maybe he did and it wasnt public info, still ill believe it when i see him work this into some games effectively.

Valid point. I agree he should have worked on it sooner. He said that the offense he was playing in had something to do with it which is true but there was no reason for him not to work on it in his spare time. Im glad Stat realizes that its time for a change. Might not be a drastic change, but a change nevertheless.

I thought the whole idea of this preseason was to have no excuses. It looks like excuses are coming in line.

Your confusing excuses with actual facts- don't really understand what the benefit is in ignoring facts are, or how Amar'e banging his knee is an excuse. Personally I'm always worried when a Knick is held out with a 'minor' injury, as they always downplay them. Hopefully it is just a bruised knee- it's swollen which is a worry, so I won't be able to relax until we see Amar'e on the court- it would be brutal for him to have worked so hard in the offseason only to injure himself before the first preseason game. Fingers crossed!

How can anyone avoid banging knees with another player or twisting his ankle. It's just the odds. There has to be some sense reason in the Knicks fanbase. Are we gonna do this all year with every little nick and scrape?

This.

Agreed. This board was a lot different 10 years ago.

He is 30 in November and the body of an athlete doesn't improve after that age. This is really his last season where we can maybe expect something close to All-Star play out of him. With his injury history, age and years in the league it is simply asking too much to expect him to play at a high level for much longer.

Actually Amare only really misses time due to major injuries. Look at his career stats. Most seasons if it wasn't for a major injury, he was playing a full season, or nearly full. Look at guys like Bosh and Wade. They are guaranteed to miss 10-20 games per year no matter what, mostly because of minor injuries. When you look at Amare however, that is not the case. Unless he has a major injury like knee, back, eye, etc, he will be relatively durable. He does not miss time due to minor injuries.

A back injury like LJ played with does not necessarily cause him to miss time. It just causes him to be less of a player.

This is true, Stoudemire may be less of a player because of it and still play. Only difference is, Amare in his prime was much better than LJ. LJ, one of my favorite players of all time, was a all-star in his prime and a great role player with NY, although clearly not a star. He was solid in many areas and a great leader, but not great at anything in particular. Stoudemire was a superstar 2 years ago, and even at a decline, is still all-star caliber. If he can ever improve his defense and continue to add areas like a post game he will extent his career and be a very solid player into his mid 30s. I would still rather have him than Chris Bosh.

Stat is definitely a star. Not a superstar. That is reserved for hall of fame players who do more than just score
gunsnewing @ 10/12/2012 12:07 PM
Stat is not practicing again today. Woodson said today would dictate if he plays tomorrow so we will see. I hope this really is justva bruised knee
smackeddog @ 10/12/2012 12:17 PM
Hmm, since Amar'e described it as a bone bruise, I did a bit of reading and it's not great. A bone bruise is one stage before a fracture. The pain can last from a few days to a few months, and sometimes, for some reason can be lead to further knee injuries like ACL tears. So yeah, definitely don't rush him back- very frustrating.
gunsnewing @ 10/12/2012 12:21 PM
Thanks for the incite. I knew there had to be more to it than just a bruise.

Team chemistry is going to be all be all screwed up if he misses extended time. Just like last year. Hopefully by the end of the year they can get it going

impossible injury in sports to gauge. Hakeem Nicks has missed like 3 games now because of it. What happens is the knee swells when your active. Only rest fixes it. Its 90% a result of banging it against something (another player or the floor).

Its just bad luck, but it wont have any lasting effects, Ive had it. It just annoying because your knee acts hurt (swelling) but is just "bruised"

Amare is more prone to something like this as opposed to Melo because he doesnt have that layer of fat to protect him.

Well we hung our hat on and pushed all our chips to the table for a "FULL TRAINING CAMP" (pre-season games included I'd imagine) so we'll see.

This was the very reason the Suns wouldn't give Amar'e a fully guaranteed deal offering $75mil. Kerr made the comments in the media doctors informed them Amar'e had possibly at best 5yrs left in his knees.

Dude bumped knees with Copeland in practice, has nothing to do with the microfracture surgeries or knee cartilage issues he had in Phoenix. If you mentioned back issues, I'd give you that, but Woody said he'd be available if it was the regular season.

gunsnewing @ 10/12/2012 4:50 PM
Kerr may be right but this knee injury has nothing to due with his past injuries. He banged knees with a teammate in practice. It's just frustrating because one one hand you don't want to rush him back since only rest will stop the swelling and prevent a torn acl later in the year. On the other hand we know what lack of training camp can do to the chemistry between him, melo and tyson. Or does simply having better pg play solve those chemistry problems?

The suns medical staff are amazing- they had a future vision that in two years time Amar'e would bang knees with another player during training camp, thus bruising it. The events of two days ago have proved them 100% correct.

Doesn't matter if it's bumped knees...Amar'e of all players can't afford to have even accidental damage as he's not 100% strong in this area of his body and he's getting older. He can injure his hands or whatever but his knees no way. The fact he's being treated with kid gloves is evidence of how sensitive this issue is. I'm happy they are doing this but it doesn't help our situation out per say in the short term. We can't afford any setbacks or slow starts.
