Knicks · Jason Kidd Changes Things (page 1)

There are a bunch of human interest stories that a fan can get with:

James White battling his way to the show at 30. Newark, New Jersey's own prodigal son, Chris Copeland, working his way back home to play in a world famous arena that must feel surreal to him. A 35 year old rookie.

Raymond Felton returning to a city that is as tough as his mindset. Marcus Camby and Kurt Thomas still looking good in the unis they left behind nearly a decade ago.

However, the story that may hold the most intrigue is our new player/ coach Jason Kidd. Suddenly, the basketball is swinging from one side of the court to the other with a purpose. The extra pass is becoming as intuitive as lacing up one's shoes. There is a selflessness that makes Knicks ball a beautiful thing to watch again.

Snatching two wins right off the rip makes the message that Mike Woodson is preaching that much more believable.

Having a floor leader to execute the plan makes it tangible.

Jason Kidd will mentor Raymond Felton and change the way he sees the floor. That is huge.

Both wins the Knicks have held their opponents to 84 points. The Sixers had 25 at the end of the first quarter.

Kidd looks great out there. I still wish Lin could have been learning under him.
holfresh @ 11/4/2012 3:12 PM
Kidd has been great...But I think we have to keep him in the role he is in...He is great as the second guard making that extra pass...He wasn't as effective in the third playing the primary PG...The offense had it's hiccups...But what an addition...

felton will learn a lot especially limiting the turnovers

Its a lot of fun to watch Kidd and Kurt. They seem to conserve their movement but are always positioned in the right spot at the right time. Kurt is still really good.

You go away. The Knicks are doing great right now and you are picking fights with people.

Kidd has been a great pickup. The guy is one of the smartest players i've ever seen. did you see how he fooled the sixers twice today and drew fouls. I love our 3 headed point guard system we have
Knixkik @ 11/4/2012 3:59 PM
What makes kidd great is he is now playing his natural position at this point in his career which is the SG. He is better operating from the wing. He can be an effective starting SG for the next 2 years.
callmened @ 11/4/2012 4:04 PM
Please dont forget his defensive ability to guard 2Gs

JKidd at 40

- I said this on Twitter, but it feels pretty surreal to watch Jason Kidd make all these small, ingenious plays to rescue possessions on either end of the floor. He's excelled at the basic stuff like hitting his open threes and moving the ball and staying in front of his man and stuff, but I'm especially enjoying all this little shit that used to be so infuriating when he played against the Knicks. The wily old coot jumps passing lanes in such a timely, casual manner that you almost feel embarrassed for the interceptee. He's shown a knack for drawing fouls in dicey scenarios. He keeps looking off open men only to find opener men seconds later. Oh, and the guy hit TWO driving (well, maybe not driving. Coasting, maybe. Ghost-riding?) layups. Kidd was a key cog in both the ball movement and the halfcourt defense, and he added all those little tricks and treats to boot. Great game.

- Oh man, and that stolen entry pass that turned into a long outlet for a Melo buzzer-beater to end the first half! Holy shit! I'm beginning to frighten myself with how much I've enjoyed these first two games of Kidd.

Power Rankings

2. Jason Kidd. (Last week: 8) It's been a pretty surreal experience to be a fan on the beneficiary end of Jason Kidd's subtle genius. Over almost two decades of facing Kidd, Knicks fans have grown accustomed to loathing his wizardly sense of and control over his surroundings. All of a sudden, he's preempting opposing offensive game plans, patiently unraveling defenses, resurrecting broken plays, and just flat-out draining shots (6-11 on threes so far) for our own good. We even saw the guy drive in for a few lay-ups this week.

Kidd's defensive presence is, to me, a lot like Anthony's. As the temporary starting two-guard, he's not qualified to lock down a lot of his marks one-on-one. His defensive excellence — and he has been nothing short of excellent — is more predicated on escorting his man toward help and offering help of his own whenever possible. He's been uniformly terrific and a delight to watch. Oh, and even with Kidd as a starter, Mike Woodson's been able to limit those 39-year-old legs to 25 minutes a game so far. Granted, that could change when the Knicks actually find themselves threatened in a fourth quarter someday.

The turnovers-by-the-bushel that have become a staple of the Knicks offense over the last decade have suddenly shrunk under double digits.

As the Knicks are playing to a steady reggae beat, every possession becomes more valuable... ergo, if we do not turn it over, the opposing offense has even fewer opportunities to score.

As a result, our beloved Knicks have also done something unheard of... they have controlled the tempo and the scoreboard for a dominant amount of minutes. Dallas, one of Jason Kidd's recent stops, will be an entertaining reunion as the Mavs bring new speed and yoots to The Garden.

Are we having fun yet?
