Knicks · Spears: Carmelo's improved Defense makes him an MVP candidate (page 2)

Melo was played straight up for the majority of the Dallas game by Marion/Crowder/Jones. He may have been met at the rim but he clearly wasn't constantly doubled yesterday.
Matter of fact the PNR with Felton proved to be more abusive on their defense yesterday hence Chandler finish several AND 1s because of trapping Felton early in it.
yea, marion single covered him, so did crowder....I think guys see the help defense come over when the player drives and think he is being doubled... I don't know bro... carmelo started off the game shooting bad... dallas didn't have to do much..... and again with the hockey assist.. LOL jeez, this is just going overboard...
I coach as well, so I pay very close attention to the details on the defensive end of the floor, looking for things to steal and use for my teams. Trust, Dallas was sending double teams his way, particularly in the first half of the game. No so much in the second half after Knicks were lighting them up from behind the arc in the 1st half. Basically, when Melo received the ball in his sweet spots, elbow and in, they would send another player at him. Again, this was mainly in the first half.
Hockey Assist? Yes, anything that gives Melo a little bit of credit is overboard in your eyes.
dude, it seems like the main agenda of most of this board is to give melo credit, even where it is not due..... chandler had a very good game and kidd was very good, although I didn't like that all of his shots were three pointers....
carmelo forced the issue, wasn't any more of a factor than felton..... that is the truth...
I mean, the knicks win, and carmelo plays average ball and the knicks won because of the "carmelo effect"..
the knicks lose and carmelo plays bad, we lost not because he played bad, but because he is not getting star calls, but we must notice his hockey assist...
it doesn't have to be all about carmelo.... win or lose..

Its not like people are desperately scrambling to compliment Melo. Hes been bashed by a lot for not moving the ball and now hes doing that. It just doesnt show up in the assist numbers because the person he kicks it out to doesnt always take the shot.
meh.... he is moving the ball in spots... he is also holding the ball just as much.. way too much credit is given here.. sorry....

I'd find it very surprising if hockey assists and regular assists were negatively correlated - very surprising if the year your regular assists were at a career low you had a career high in hockey assists.
Why? Because he's the best player on the team.
Thanks.

The focus is on Melo in this thread because it bears his name in the title. Actually, this is what I said concerning last nights game:
Were there times when the offense got stagnant and the ball didn't move much? Yes. But thats not why we last the game. When you give up 114 pts on the road, your probably gonna lose 10 times out of 10. Defense or lack there of contributed to the loss. Not to mention, Dallas caught fire in the 3rd and most of the 4th. Mayo, Carter and even Crowder were hitting tough shots. Its okay to give the opposition some credit sometimes.
Not a mention of Melo, from me, concerning the game. Lack of defense coupled with a hot shooting team is the reason why we lost. Melo is the best player on the team so he will get the lion-share of the credit similar to the other best players on their teams. But you better believe, Melo will also get the brunt of the blame when his teams dont win whether its his fault or not. You should know better than anyone because you are always harping on his playoff record.

Melo wasn't doubled that much maybe 25% of the time which is par for the course. Others want you to think it was the greater 50% or closer to 100% of the time. O.J. Mayo received more attention than he did yesterday.
Melo was very average and sloppy yesterday although his overall effort was there.

maybe not you so much uptown, but it happens a lot in thest threads..
Also melo is the highest scorer on the team, not the best player..
He gets lots of blame because he tries to place himself as the face of the team he makes it all about him..... the best thing for melo would have been to come here and be one of the guys... Amare was already established as the face of this franchise... I swear this team does things ass backwards....
that is not your fault.. just venting bro..

They're 8-2, so somebody has to be named on the Knicks if its not Carmelo, right?
Let's hear some names.

People on message boards say the silliest things and yet some of us feel the need to respond like I do...First of all, no player on this team who has the scoring ability close to what Carmelo does, can rebound like he does...No one on this team, who can score and rebound close to what he does, can pass like he does...No one who can do all three close to what he does, has not done it on a sustained level that Carmelo has done over the last two years...I say two years, because of his 42 pts, 17 rebs, 10 asst game against Boston in the playoffs with the entire team keying on him...Also wanted the highlight a month of superior play to usher the Knicks into the playoffs last season...I know sustained good play like this don't tickle your fancy unless it has a "knickname"(pun) associated with it and a global following...But coupled with his defense of the last few months of last year and this year, there is no other player close to being the best player on this team as Carmelo is...Maybe either of you would like to point out who that person is or those individuals are, who is capable of putting up those numbers for a sustained period of time or maybe just one game??...Or just simply who is better??..
Melo is off? He is not Jordon as far as consistency goes. We are depending on JR it seems, to be on. Novak needs to come around as well. We really do need Stat back in a sense. I'm not looking forward to his defense, but his scoring will be handy. If coach does plays them together, the wins may taper down quite a bit, but it may be a chance we have to take because come playoffs I think teams will really adjust to Melo and take their chances with JR hitting buckets. Hopefully Brewer keeps up the very good play, as well.

Now I fully understand it.
Lebron James, Kevin Durant, and Carmelo Anthony are all in the MVP race, but that's only because they each have better teammates on their respective rosters who are intentionally being left out.

Nowhere in my post did I say he was. Nowhere! I simply made a factual observation of what exist on another website tracking MVP candidacy
Melo is in the running much like Elton Brand was for the Clippers several yrs ago...Lody Freakin Do
Kyle Lowry cracked a Top 10 List from last year around January
