Knicks · Spears: Carmelo's improved Defense makes him an MVP candidate (page 3)

CorrectedThis is getting ridiculous now. Its okay if some on this board doesn't like him, but lets be real here. Who the H.E double hockey sticks is the best player on this team if not Melo?!
Kidd, Tyson, and Smith are all playing better than Melo is.

There's times when Wade and Westbrook have better stretches than James and Durant, but it doesn't alter the meaning of the award.
It's always gone to the best player on the team. And for the Knicks, the talent level between Carmelo and the second best Knick is monumental.

The more you keep regurgitating this it only makes Melo's season look far less than what it is, which isn't much. It's not his best season of his career especially since you're debating this from an offensive perspective. You're saying he's in the discussion by default. AND?
So theoretically if we were to trade Melo for Rudy Gay and maintain our level of play which more than likely we would, Gay by default becomes our MVP guy.
Marc Gasol was on the Basketball Reference dot com list I referred to a couple post back with Tyson on it
There's other players entering this discussion such as...
Kemba Walker for the Bocats who are only 2gms behind us
O.J. Mayo until Dirk comes back and he has the numbers supporting his career/season case
Stephen Curry if the playoffs started today GSW are in

as I have said before regarding this argument and the criteria the posters around here set, it opens up the door for a number of players....

The thing about it though, just getting in the playoffs isn't the criteria, having one of the top seeds is.
Yes if we had Rudy and we secured a top seed he would be considered imo, although i don't think Rudy commands the game respect that Melo does, but nonetheless the media and sportwriters are gonna look at the team and give someone on there a nod for consideration.
But we all know this MVP talk is pretty much decided who are the picks even prior to the season starting and rarely are a player picked outside of those early season picks.

Ummmmmm No
The longer Dirk stays out and Mayo shoots 50/55/85 and the Mavs maintain being a playoff team he's an MVP candidate.
Posters are talking about Melo being an MVP candidate. To what extent that he's a candidate right? Well there are other candidates. If you're trying to place him at the top sorry he's not budging Durant or Lebron or CP3 form their position. Then you have factor where the Spurs and Grizzlies end up record wise then pick the best player off their team. See how ridiculous this discussion is when we say one thing but we're trying to make it mean something it's not?
If the Warriors get in the playoffs without Bogut for many games and Brandon Rush out for the year pick Stephen Curry or David Lee.....take your pick.
It's not Melo's best season as a player so stop making this be more than what it is SHEESH! You guys are too concerned with his personal glory

And no, just making the playoff does not warrant mvp consideration.
Obviously i don't care much for it as i've stated the award is pretty much already decided and only unusual circumstances can upset what already there.
It's Durant and LeBrons to lose, Melo is on the outside.
Do you seriously think if the playoffs started today Steph Curry would win MVP? Come on dude, you can't be that out of tune.

No but he might be a candidate much the same Brandon Jennings is listed as a candidate on the NBA.com Sekou Blog. We're talking about candidacy not winning it all because Melo will lose like all the other candidates whoever they may be after Lebron/Durant/CP3.

True yet Uptown and Jhuzt took offense when I mentioned Tyson Chandler's name showed up on the Basketball Reference dot com list. Which goes to show although team success may dictate the award more so than anything else certain fans are only interested if a certain player gets the glory.

Awards mean very little to me, i can't speak for them though.
I don't hold it against players for not winning them, no different do i praise and gloat for winning them.
But let's be serious.....
Knicks get a #1 or 2 seed in the east.
The award is going to the best player even if he doesn't have the most impact.

CorrectedThis is getting ridiculous now. Its okay if some on this board doesn't like him, but lets be real here. Who the H.E double hockey sticks is the best player on this team if not Melo?!
Kidd, Tyson, and Smith are all playing better than Melo is.Silly statement...What people who understand this game is looking at is what does Carmelo's presence means to the success of the NY Knickerbockers...statistically, no one else on this team are putting up real numbers across the board the way Carmelo is...They don't command the same attention from the other teams...Kidd is now a role player who plays limited minutes...Kidd right now would not be successful running the position he ran his entire career..He no longer can be an effective PG...He has nicely fit into a niche with the Knicks and has excelled because of the attention paid to others like Felton and Carmelo...He has benefited and is making the most it...Chandler played his best game all year last night and that because Felton found him where he could be most effective..Threads were popping up all over the place asking what is wrong with Chandler..Before that he has been non-existent...He pulls down 1 more rebound per game than Carmelo, actual numbers...JR is playing a great role off the bench for us and will be considered for a 6th man of the year award...Again, a role player...
Right now there is no disputing Carmelo is the single most important piece to the Knicks' early success...Bonn has said himself that Carmelo was the reason for the 18-6 run and it was the most exciting thing that has happened to the Knicks in the last decade...Did you change your mind???...We are now resorting to word play to extend your arguments.."playing better"..depends how u define "talented".."a rare set of skills"..Come on, we all know who the best player is, who commands the most attention, who is the leader, and who is the go to guy on the team...Only one person on the team is indispensable, Carmelo...
Real #s across the board? For a PF:
Scoring efficiency: average
Rebounding: slightly below average
Blocks: below average
Assist:TO ratio: slightly below average
Steals: slightly above average
When has efficiency been a criteria for MVP?

Come on Bonn...Ur better than to resort to this...Melo is a SF playing out of position and excelling, he is defending PF and centers...How many other guys in NBA could pull it off????..LeBron, sure...Certainly not Durant.. Pierce, no...Granger, no..Deng, no..Rudy Gay, no...Gallo, hahahahah...Gerald Wallace, no...Medda World, as great a defender that he is, no...Appreciate what u have...The versatility of a star and all u guys can do is find new ways to tear at him...We are playing the best ball this franchise has seen in about a decade, you were absolutely right about that...Yet this board still carries a torch for Gallo, Lin and all the other forget me nots...Lin, Freaking Jeremy Lin...Ripping Melo somehow makes your world better...Good luck, man...

It doesn't matter if you're playing out of position. You don't get handicap points. If you get out-rebounded at the PF spot, that's a deficit that other players must compensate for.

When has efficiency been a criteria for MVP?
Because mostly statistically misguided people are voting, never. If you take seriously the notion of "most value," it has to be though.
