Knicks · The New York Knicks Are Just Getting Warmed Up (page 3)

That's a silly question.
How is crossing the street without looking without getting killed not dumb?
"He's going to have to do that," Woodson was saying earlier Tuesday. "When guys are struggling to shoot, especially when you play big minutes, you've got to do other things."
and anudder thing, if the shot goes in, it is a good shot.

JR is obviously doing other things that keep him on the floor why else would he play when he shoots like he is drunk?
Is a drunk hook shot from half court with 10 seconds remaining in the game that goes in and you win even though you left time on the clock and you gave your coach a heart attack and ... A GOOD SHOT? I guess its depends on your interpretation of "good". Its "good" cause it fell. Its "bad" because I never want to see it attempted again.
JR Smith is our John Starks. Forget the shots. Look at his defense and rebounding. The most overlooked performance was Steve Novak. Novak did not make a shot but contributed better defense and had 3 rebounds, all in traffic.
Nice touch.

I am cool with it too (for now)
Novak is playing better defense and had a couple of nice rebounds. His inability to move without the ball is painful though. He can't get off a shot when his man stays with him (does not sag).
On the flip side, you can't leave him so it takes one defender away from helping on Carmelo when he goes off. I guess Woody likes that he stretches the defense and keeps them honest. Cool with it (for now)
One play from Tuesday night that ended in a rare Anthony miss exemplifies the Knicks’ commitment to ball movement and spacing. After the Nets neutralized a Felton-Chandler pick-and-roll, the ball found Anthony on the right block, where he was guarded by point guard C.J. Watson. Watson had switched onto Anthony in the scramble to stop Chandler, and now the Nets had to send a second player to prevent Anthony from scoring easily.
Anthony quickly passed out of trouble, setting off a chain of passes as the Knicks swung the ball to the left side of the court then back around to the right corner, where Anthony was now wide open because the Nets had raced to the other side of the court to prevent a Steve Novak 3-pointer. The Knicks strung together seven passes without taking a single dribble and in doing so completely compromised the Nets’ defense. - Beckley Mason, NYTimes
THAT sequence was pure, vintage Knicks basketball from the Red Holzman era. The ball flew from man to man. It was beautiful.
Once our reputation for taking the three point shot echoes around the league, guess what happens?
Amar'e enters the building, just in time to practice his Hakeem tutorials... INSIDE
The Knicks’ high volume of 3-point shots don’t come from desperation heaves at the end of the shot clock or off wild transition attempts. Of the 28 3-pointers they took Tuesday night against Brooklyn, a full 20 of them were basically wide-open shots. - Beckley Mason, NYT
The outside, inside, outside game is just developing... with a surgeon, wearing number 5, supervising the operation.

Oh my God that was indeed beautiful. I was there last night and during all those passes you heard oohs and aahs from the crowd. That possession was great.
You know what else is great? The Eastern Conference Standings. Can't stop looking at them.
The Good News? There is no need for Ray Felton, or anyone slse, to overcompensate for anything in his past. JR Smith can keep firing until his coach tells him to have a seat. Rasheed is free to be himself, which is a good thing, even when it leads to a tech. Amar'e does not need any concern whether he and Melo can live together as friends. Jason Kidd will organize the floor and Pablo will be better tomorrow than he was yesterday because that is how he rolls.
This roster is experienced enough to fill in the blanks.
There is no need for anyone to force a one-on-one, except in an emergency. With all eyes trained on Carmelo, someone is bound to be open.

That sequence was epic, never seen reds knicks, but that was beautiful basketball.
And that is why our 3pointers aren't "fools gold"

Anji - you would have loved Holzman's Knicks. They were unselfish and comprised diverse skill sets. They had "that thing" that made you feel that no game was out of reach, no matter the score. Last night when we were down 17, it never felt uncomfortable. You just knew the would make a run. The only question was, "when." One night, back in the day, down by 16, the Knicks scored 18 straight points in the final minutes to defeat the Bucks with Hall of Famers Kareem Abdul Jabbar and Oscar Robertson.
The most AMAZING closure to an NBA game, ever.
The NY Knicks elevated defense in all professional sports. The chant originated in the upper reaches of The Garden. Nowhere else. The Garden. Mainly, they got stops when they needed them. The place was so loud you could feel the roof vibrate.
Our mesh of imperfect talent talent translated into a diverse attack where anyone could be trusted to take a clutch shot during a positive run or to stop another teams momentum. The most endearing trait was that the bench, anchored by players like Cazzie Russell, Dave Stallworth, Nate Bowman, and yes...even Phil Jackson, were always ready to pick up the starters.
Our current bench has size (Bowman/ Sheed, Jackson/ Camby), multiple skill sets (Riordan/ JR Smith) and inside pop (Stallworth/ Stoudemire).
Eerie, huh?
misterearl wrote:We Must Protect This House MusicBootleg Alert: blk exec - This team has flaws...just like every NBA team. Our main flaw is not SG, old age, etc....It's dumb azz Knick fans that always find something to complain about. Top team in the East, undefeated at home. Best team any Knick fan has ever seen or heard since the 70's. The thing this thread is good for, is to invite other fans to spread their negative cancer.
Regardless of this team blowing out Miami twice by 20, winning tough games while shooting under 40%....
Did we have enough men for a layup line last night? Sheed out. Camby out. Amar'e out, but close to creating an inevitable (cough) drama. Shump out for as long as he needs to be 100 per cent rock steady. Melo in stitches. Felton's hand throbbing. Jason Kidd with a swollen dome. JR Smith in a slump.
What happens? All they do is win. 15-5 has a nice symmetry to it. For those keeping score, about two decades since we have been 10 games over .500. Say it with me. Fifteen and five. Sounds so good, don;t you agree?
15-5
Now the good news. We can be better. Mike Woodson knows this. He is still auditioning. Note Raymond Felton stiing for a majority of the fourth quarter, only to be inserted with about 2 minutes remaining. Was it punishment or a message delivered the old-fashioned way? You Suck. You Sit. In this case, suckitude is a temporary thing that every player experiences from time to time. Even the superstars.
JR Smith will drive us crazy. So did John Starks. We still love the baseline lefthanded dunk over 3 Bulls. Raymond Felton will NEVER play beautiful basketball. Pit bulls are not interested in beauty contests. They live to tear you to pieces and get the damn bone. Melo will never be Lebron. Cool. Now go get me my 30 points the way you know how, in the clutch. Sheed WILL get a technical. So did Red Auerbach. The Celtics use his acting to fuel furious rallies. "Ball don't lie." Neither does the Boston Garden ceiling.
In past years the Knicks flaws created controversy, juicy headlines and locker room rumors of dissent. This season, mental mistakes are rewarded with time on the pine, watching your running buddies have all the fun. Amar'e wants to be on the court for one reason - he wants to apologize for last season and fulfill his prophecy that, "the Knicks are back!"
We will get banged around, harassed on the road and doubted all season. Cool. Meanwhile, Mike Woodson is not happy.
Isn't winning grand?
Homeristic fable-isms. Indeed.
My keyboard bows to the greatness that is the Answer Man.
(vintage Lite Beer TV Commercial) Joe Frazier: "I feel so good it makes me wanna sing!" (crowd cowers in fear)
jrod mc - to be certain, my keyboard is on drugs. The Novakane has kicked in and it feels no anxiety. Who needs aspirin when your dome is symbolically jabbed after another three point shot from deep?
Alcohol? No thank you. Life am good. Stagger backwards like Fred Sanford then pass the Champipple.
Scary.
Life am be is good.
Funny thing is, on Mike Fatcessa's Year Round Hot Stove Baseball/Swansong Social Activism Show, to the one guy who slipped by the screeners and actually asked a question about the Knicks, Mike actually just said Lebron is in a different, higher species than Melo. Greatest player in the history of this or any other game. Greatest athelete ever in the solar system.
Those things might be so, but that's high praise for someone who's accomplished one chip in an NBA decade. Alot better happen in less than the next 10 years.
Greatest in the history of the game = Great player + chips.
The Carmelo injury did not impede the progress this team has made in running its offense. As a matter of fact, the offense (25 assists and 6 turnovers) is becoming a machine. The ball movement is crisp and decisive. Players are starting to trust the extra pass. In an emergency, when the offense breaks down, even the contested shots are being taken with some poise. Jr Smith is a perfect example of how far we have come in a year. He has become more selective and effective. Shooting 7/14 is a good indication of better days.
I feel the need.... For Rasheed.
