Unreal...

NEWTOWN, Conn. -- A lone gunman killed 26 people at an elementary school here, including 18 children, in a terrifying early Friday morning shooting spree.

The Associated Press and local media reported the shooter, an unidentified 20-year-old adult male, was also dead inside Sandy Hook Elementary School. A second person was in custody and undergoing questioning. Two handguns were recovered at the scene. Mayor Mark Boughton said several victims had been taken to local hospitals.

Groups of students some crying, some holding hands were escorted from the school by teachers. Some witnesses reported of up to 100 shots. There were unconfirmed reports that the assailant, dressed in military style assault gear, shot most of the victims in a kindergarten classroom.

State Police Lt. Paul Vance would not confirm the number of fatalities and shooting victims until relatives had been notified.

The incident - which would be one of the worst school shootings in U.S. history - is the latest in a series mass shootings in the U.S. this year, including Tuesday's assault by a lone gunman at a Portland, OR., shopping mall that left two dead and one wounded.

White House spokesman Jay Carney said Homeland Security adviser John Brennan informed President Obama of the shooting at 10:30 a.m. "The president is receiving regular updates as more information becomes available," Carney said. Carney said Obama would comment when more details were known.

Sandy Hook is in a residential, wooded neighborhood about 60 miles northeast of New York City. It has has 39 teachers and about 650 students. A reverse 911 call went out to parents warning of an incident. Parents were being reunited with children. But, NBC Connecticut reported, police were searching the area behind the school with guns drawn.

Terese Lestik was relieved to find her five year old daughter, Eva, unharmed.

"I heard a boom-boom,'' Eva said of the gunshots she heard earlier.

"I'm horrified,'' said Terese Lestik. "I just pray for whoever is hurt."

Alexis Wasik, a third-grader at the school, said police were checking everybody inside the school before they were escorted to the firehouse. She said she heard shots and saw her former nursery school teacher being taken out of the building on a stretcher, but didn't know if the woman had been shot.

"We had to walk with a partner," said Wasik, 8. One child leaving the school said that there was shattered glass everywhere. A police officer ran into the classroom and told them to run outside and keep going until the reach the firehouse, The Hartford Courant reported.

Innocent children...just unbelievable.

I can't imagine what those parents are going to go through. This country is a sick place when it comes to weapons and violence. It has to stop.
VCoug @ 12/14/2012 2:14 PM
Jesus Christ, this is disgusting. When are we ever going to get a sane gun policy in this country.

Some of these kid's don't even know what's going on... So sad. I have a little daughter and I couldn't imagine. My life would be over if I lost my daughter like this. Could never and would never be the same. Heartbreaking for these kids and families. Just the thought of those kids murdered being in pain before passing is enough for me not wanting to think about this anymore. Can't believe this much evil can be inside of one person/people.

fishmike @ 12/14/2012 2:22 PM
nothing more precious and sacred then the life of a child. Nothing.
GoNyGoNyGo @ 12/14/2012 2:26 PM
IT gives me chills. We need to teach the value of life to all. You only have one shot at this rodeo.

That is the question I have. Will public figures who believe that its ok to own gun to satisfy their hobbies and like to say that guns are not to blame but blame the whack jobs who do these kinds of things, will they finally come to gripes with reality of guns in society?

Apparently the shooter lives in Hoboken and there is speculation that he was a disgruntled student teacher who had access to the school as opposed to a 20yr old parent. Whioh is possible but less likely

Sick phuch! As a parent of two and former trustee of a montessori school I am horriefied as anyone reading this must be. We used to discuss this kind of stuff in meetings and were always nausiated we had to even consider such horror. It was messed up to have to think in these terms but we were more concerned with abductions.

I am far from being any kind of advocate for automatic weapons, or guns in general and my first reaction is anger for higher gun control but a sick phuch that wants to inflict evil as this guy did will find the ways and means to do so. Got to get the guns from the sick.

His mother was a teacher at the school and he killer her.

I am horrified by this news!

knicks1248 @ 12/14/2012 3:41 PM
from my understanding the mother of the shooting work as a teacher at the school, i think she worked in the class room this idiot shot up..really fck up ppl in this world
CashMoney @ 12/14/2012 4:01 PM
What a sad day. I have a 6 year old and just got home from work. My wife was on the couch watching the news in tears. Of course the a-hole killed himself. Fckn world is going mad....

America's gun control regulation needs a massive reform.

not sure you can stop these incidents with just laws/better enforcement, determined nut bags will not worry about whats legal. better enforcement may help some, or maybe preventing folks under psychiatric care from getting weapons, however -- if they simply want to make a crazy "point"...

no easy fix for this.

gunsnewing @ 12/14/2012 4:17 PM
Automatic weapons are illegal but you can purchase semi automatic weapons and have it converted. Something needs to be done
