Anyone see it yet? Don't spoil it if you have but was wondering if Spike had valid reason to hate on it.
He said he would not see it. They drop the N-word 110 times. My daughter saw it said the language and dialog of the slaves to her seemed period appropriate. She said it was a "Historal fantasy in the same vein of INGLORIOUS BASTARDS" where the period is restored, add some cool out of period music, and the empowered main characters do their thing. A bit of a hybrid of sorts.
My wife asked me why I was interested in the racial aspect and I mentioned that Spike said he would not see it because of the N-bombs dropped. Daughter thought the word was striking and ugly in the modern era and not used to hearing in movies or in literature but it did not striker her as being out of place given the time the movie takes place. She said "an ungly word used but it was an ugly time" in reference to slavery. The NWord was more common place in our earlier history.
My wife and I do like Spikes movies. He must put a lot of time and money being a mascot of sorts for the knicks even on the road at times. She said "Maybe he envious that Tarantino makes these crazy but higly successful movies and if worked more instead of being a groupie at knick games he'd make more movies"! Had to laugh! I said that might be true about me at times!
Maybe Spike needs to see the movie before he tries to call it out?
Did not see it yet, but we saw "The Hobbit". It did not disappoint. I highly recommend if you like the LOR Trilogy.
Kerry Washington is scorching HOT!!!

I dont know if thats changed too much unfortunately...
I saw it. I am African American. I was NOT offended. I might see it again.
Went to see it with my GF last night and it was literally one of my favourite movies seen in a long time. If anyone is portrayed negatively in this movie, it's the white folks. The whole nigger wording is fitting throughout the movie because Tarantino is making so much fun of the stupid racists and also portraying them as inhumane sons of bitches. And anytime you have a scene in a movie with some cool Western music and a cool cat doing donuts on his horse, you have to take a bow.
Spike shouldn't be calling it out imo, because when it's said and done, this movie isn't trying to be successful via realism like Spike's are. They are over-the-top, great gory action and with conversations varying between cool, crazy, funny and intelligent.
So if Spike had made a movie about a revolting slave from back when slaving was at it's "greatest" or whatever, he wouldn't have used the word nigger ever? It's how it was, and that sucks, but it is what it is.
My point is, to me, the use of nigger shouldn't be what is making you think of how horrible it was, it's the crazy inhumane deeds/mistreatings the slavers and the general white demographic did to the black people. If you walk out of the theater thinking you thought the movie was stupid because of said word, then you probably shouldn't go see Tarantino movies.
Nice! I'm a big tarantino fan. Gonna to have to check it out
I haven't seen it yet and haven't read any commentary about it on this thread..But at some point I would express what I think is Spike's point on the topic given that I kind of ran around in the type of circles in 90s Brooklyn that the ilk of Spike might have been in...Sort of the Brooklyn artist scene that have a different point of view on something like this..I think it's certainly interesting..Those who think Spike is racist haven't took the time to delve into his view of the world given his particular experiences..I think it's interesting people would have such a strong opinion on such a topic without fully grasping what it is of why Spike hold such strong viewpoints..Calling Spike a racist is lazy..

I dont think Spikes a racist but if he actually does have a problem with Tarantino using the N word in his films then he really shouldnt be using it himself

In all seriousness, I think it's a bit deeper than that..

I haven't seen Django yet but I feel like Spike's problem has more to do with certain scenes in Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction than anything in Django Unchained.

I thought it didn't come close to the first 2 LOTR, I didn't have high expectations (like the nets managment)so I wasn't all that dissappointed..You know whats funny..If you are an Entourage fan, there was a sence in episodes 6 where two young writers approach ARIE and BABS looking to sell a script called the HOBBIT..back then it sounded hilarious, and Arie basically told them to kick rocks..5 yrs later it comes out..
I know spike personally, worked for him on Clockers, Girl 6, and part time at his store( not there no more) in bklyn on dekalb ave..He has no love for tarintino, he thinks he makes movies to degrades black folks..point blank..
Spike is a real cool down to earth dude, and your right about his love for the knicks, he rearly shoots movies during the NBA season, and he will stop production if there's a knick game and he's in NY..
Interesting..if that is the reason Tarantino makes movies then why did he make Django?

Bingo. Spike was probably offended by the characters in Reservoir Dogs and the "dead n****r storage" scene in Pulp Fiction.
Something that should be pointed out is that Tarantino's character's wife in Pulp Fiction is African American and he uses the N-word.
All of Tarantino's movies are meant to be ironic. That means the violence and vulgarities aren't supposed to be taken at face value.
Tarantino uses graphic content in his movies not to advertise it but to show his viewers how stupid racism and violence really is.
I read Spike had a problem with the Movie "Jackie Brown" by Tarantino.
I have to admit, I did not get the movie nor remember it well.
Pulp Fiction was a trip! Still one of my favorites.
I like Spike and don't think he's a racist but he does have one hand on the race card at all times.
well, spike lee and q.t. are both my favorite directors and ironically they direct in a similar style with the score powering their films. its strange since q.t. was in a spike lee movie before ( girl 6). i love spike but his mouth does get him wn trouble. i think that is why he doesnt get the credit he desreves. at least three movie he has done ( do the right thing, malcolm x and 25th hour) should have garnered more nominations and awards. q.t. is a great director and maybe a better one since he can direct more genres than what lee did though that could change with lee directing old boy next year. sadly, they used that language in the past but he also realize that people use it in the present as the language is prevalent in his movies. i dont see much wrong with with him using it if its within context.
BUAHAHAHAH, you guys still watch hollywood movies?? hahahaha that's great
