Knicks · Is Chris Copeland A Diamond In The Rough Or Just An Average Guy? (page 3)

Not sure I agree with this line of thinking (at least yet). It is difficult to assess Cope after only a partial season in the NBA mostly as a second teamer. He is probably still trying to find how his game fits the NBA as Woodson is still toying with Cope's role on the team. Coming out of pre-season....many here predicted that Cope would only see splinters on the bench or at most a few minutes during blowouts. He has exceeded expectations and may still be building confidence in his NBA game.

On the perimeter he seems to move the ball within the offensive flow of the system and is not a black hole. When he is inside however there is an element of his game that still seems like he is playing a pick-up game and will just charge the basket and throw it various ways at the rim to see what sticks. He does however (and as you point out) seem to have a knack for scoring. I disagree with your premis in another post that the Knicks could use a role player with a different skill set instead of Cope because they already have enough chuckers. First - they already have that player (the currently injured Camby as well as Kurt Thomas)....Second - they have had that role player in the recent past with no offensive game(JJ). Cope has a nice outside touch for a big.....can always use that.....plus rebounding is primarily effort and technique...there is still time for him to develop this as an NBA player. Yes he is 28, but perhaps he is a late bloomer. Age is a state of mind - at least that's what I keep telling myself.

I agree that given his performance and the Knicks salary situation, it may be tough to re-sign him next year.

copeland was overseas and it seems like he isn't a scrub, diamond in the rough? not really, take for example sonny weems who used to kill the knicks with toronto, if we signed him, I have no doubt he could come in and give us 12-15ppg, and he is overseas now..

It's hard to call somebody a diamond in the rough, when he was a star overseas, with a nick name like "Melo". Lin was more of a diamond in the rough than Cope. Cope is living up to his scouting report as a solid scorer with average defense, passing and rebounding.

Personally, I think he's a tweener somewhere between SF and PF. And with the defensive schemes of Mike Wooden, he's always out matched. But I think his best position is PF, until he develops more lateral quickness on the perimeter.

What I like most about Cope, especially compared to Novak and most NBA players. He has an inside outside game on offense. You rarely see this from role players. He can post you up or take you outside. He's a nice fit on this team, when you have Chandler, Camby or Wallace helping on defense. But when he plays with Stat or Melo, and he's forced to play SF, his rebounding and defense gets exposed.

GoNyGoNyGo wrote:He is a contributor and that is more than was expected! He can score in bunches that is for sure.

I picked him off waiver in fantasy, hoping he will be this year's Jeremy Lin

Later indicators of autism include:

impaired ability to make friends with peers

You are posting at a pro-knicks website with a decidedly anti-knick view, which only serves to irritate and drag the level of discussion down --- promoting anger and frustration for all. People generally avoid these type of situations, and dont frequent areas where their opinions are acutely unpopular.

absence or impairment of imaginative and social play

Relatable to the above.

stereotyped, repetitive, or unusual use of language

Your stereotyped and repetitive language regarding Melo, is bizarre and base. You desperately organize your thoughts and views to incoherently convict Melo of being this awful person and player, in order to fulfill the daily agenda of furthering your crusade against the man. This is all stemming from a basketball trade years ago, in which the object of your desire, Gallo, has proven to be an oft-injured average player, while Melo has been the best Knick since Ewing. This only further drives your imbalanced crusade, because you have been proven wrong, on top of everything else.

restricted patterns of interest that are abnormal in intensity or focus

This is related to the above as well. You are singularly fixated on trying to convince the world of your childish hatred of Carmelo anthony, never missing an opportunity to ridicule him in very improper, and irresponsible ways, that should be beneath the level of a grown man. You are very immature in that sense, which signals a cognitive issue.

preoccupation with certain objects or subjects
inflexible adherence to specific routines or rituals

Both fit here....(why not just go to a different website, why not take a more reasonable and balanced approach if you are going to stay). Overall, you have created a weirdly obsessed parallel universe against a man who is playing great basketball and is a good person. I am convinced that you are handicapped by a diagnosed/undiagnosed cognitive impairment disorder

Im just curious as to whats really going on here with you. You are insistent on trying to ruin a great knick season. I dont like it, and Im sure Im not alone here.

tfk is fine. Contrary I am alcoholic, paranoid, and shizo at the same time. Watch out!!!

Thank goodness for that.

As for tkf, yes, he's fine.

As for Copeland, like others have said, he's a good scorer. Lee Nailon is a good comparison.

not a bad comparison big edge to Cope tho

BigDaddyG wrote:Yeah, I think you can say Copeland is both and average NBA guy and a unexpected find. You have to be happy anytime you can find a contributor from off the scrap heap. Cope reminds me a little bit of Eddy Lee, Lee Nailon and John Wallace...Guys with nice touches and scoring ability who are good in situational matchups.

BigDaddyG Goes Deep

John Wallace was one of three first round picks the year of his draft class. We had THREE number one's. Three. Who does that?

If nothing else, Chris Copeland is hungry to prove he belongs. Those road trips overseas may have been scenic, but they could also have been very lonely.

Cartman718 wrote:Right now.... Copeland > Amare.

I definitely agree and he's a better fit. He fits nicely next to Anthony has a big athletic combo forward and a good spot up shooter. Hopefully over time he improves his defense and rebounding and if he does he has a chance to be a starter for this team for the long term. I can see a starting lineup of chandler, Anthony, copeland, shumpert, and Felton doing very well.

Ha, I was a big John Wallace fan. I though he could've been a prime time player in the right system lol The sad thing is that the most productive player out of the three was Walter McCarty. I don't mean to crap on MCCarty, but geez. You'd think we could do better with three chances.

Can't argue with that. Smfh, we're not even 2 full years removed from Amar'e MVP talk, what is going on in this world, oh lord jesus sweet jesus, ain't nobody got time fo' 'dat.

by this time next year, amare could be gone if the knicks do well in the playoffs

I fully expect amare to be gone before his contract is up. His expiring will be a valuable asset.

Humility is one thing. Stepping into a starters role, after you barely made the final cut, is another. Chris Copeland should not even be here, let alone in the starting lineup. Whoever heard of a 28 year old becoming a star?

Then again, maybe its just the socks.

For the sake on continuity I hope that Copeland can stay at the 3 for 35 minutes/ Hope he can continue to earn it hes played well and could be a good player to play 3-4 with anthony if he can commit to getting a few more rebounds

I posted something similiar in the trade Novak thread. I don't think we need a 4. We need a 3 and I really like the Copeland/Carmelo combo on the floor.

Another fairly significant advantage of Copeland/Anthony is that you can seemlessly switch them with each other on the floor depending on matchups between the 3 and 4.
